Parasocial relationships are often derided as being unhealthy and isolating—critics argue that they distract and prevent individuals from forming healthy “real life” relationships. However, while that may be true of parasocial relationships taken to an extreme, it would be rare to find someone today who didn’t have parasocial relationships. Stalking a celebrity or spending an entire year’s paycheck on concert tickets are examples of parasocial relationships, but so too are crying over the death of an actor or character and joining a fan club. Benefits of parasocial relationships include finding community though fandom, modeling positive behaviors, and finding validation and inspiration through the success of people we see as being “like us.” Fanworks do not need to consider the theme that fine-art pieces will be used to discuss; they only need to be inspired by or responding to one piece of art and anything you are a fan of. Double post today, but here is my April edit which was a recreation of one of my older edits that I felt needed an update! I had loads of audio issues which are still present in the edit, but like I said in my previous post, I am trying to be less of a perfectionist and accepting the imperfections that come with the territory. And I really do love the concept and execution of the piece even with all of its faults (including one little text effect that went all wrong haha). I truly feel like this is what I wanted the original edit to be like from the very beginning. Plus this was a birthday edit since I recently turned 22 in April! When I look at this piece, the first thing that jumps out at me is the line “there is little new under the sun.” It makes me think of the new X-Men ‘97 series, the way it is a continuation of the original stories, and the way the message of X-Men continues to be misinterpreted by certain groups. I would write a poem reflecting on the way the X-Men have always been used to talk about racism and bigotry, and the way the show is being called out for being “too woke” today. Parasocial relationships are often derided as being unhealthy and isolating—critics argue that they distract and prevent individuals from forming healthy “real life” relationships. However, while that may be true of parasocial relationships taken to an extreme, it would be rare to find someone today who didn’t have parasocial relationships. Stalking a celebrity or spending an entire year’s paycheck on concert tickets are examples of parasocial relationships, but so too are crying over the death of an actor or character and joining a fan club. Benefits of parasocial relationships include finding community though fandom, modeling positive behaviors, and finding validation and inspiration through the success of people we see as being “like us.” Fanworks do not need to consider the theme that fine-art pieces will be used to discuss; they only need to be inspired by or responding to one piece of art and anything you are a fan of. This fanwork makes me think of Good Omens—the light and the dark overlapping to create a more complete picture.
