ROMANTICIZING SPRING A few years ago, while struggling to adjust to my new role as stay at home mom and getting overwhelmed by all the little repetitive tasks of caring for small children, I stumbled onto a concept that changed the way I approached my motherhood journey: romanticizing the little mundane tasks of life. In this seemingly simple act, you try to embrace boring tasks, find the good in difficult times, and allow yourself to slow down to enjoy life itself. Instead of dreading doing the dishes, you focus on how lucky you are to have dishes to wash, people you love who are eating from them. You might light a candle, put on lovely music, and try to make it fun. You learn to enjoy every season and that taking time to make things aesthetic and lovely is worthwhile and doesn't need to be expensive or elaborate. One of the things this concept is good for is helping me embrace all the seasons outdoors with my boys and finding ways to enjoy each one: like going on a picnic with a cute little picnic basket! I thrifted a beautiful picnic basket and it's been so much fun to use as decoration and then take it down to pack full of yummy goodies when we go out to hike and explore. It makes me so happy and serves a practical purpose as well as being beautiful. So here's to embracing the little mundane moments in life and celebrating the simple pieces of our days that make up the majority of our short and precious lives! Time spent doing what you love is never wasted. One of the things I love about yarn crafting is the way it encourages me to slow down and enjoy the process (often a very slow process) of making something. I am by nature a very busy soul who loves feeling productive, crossing things off a to do list, and seeing results. I have always felt like I thrived best when I'm doing a lot of things. But the strain of always trying to push myself to do more and be busy got to me over the years, and intensely increased when I had kids. When I started knitting more than 15 years ago, I did enjoy the process somewhat but I was more of a product knitter. I wanted the end result, the accomplishment, and the fun of finishing a project and starting a new one. If I had to rip out and redo something, I would get so stressed or angry. Then my hubby and I went through a rough period of financial strain where we had very little money. That was back when I was not a dyer and had very little yarn in my stash, and almost no nice quality yarn. Even the cheap stuff was out of our budget so when a mistake happened in my knitting, I stopped overlooking it or getting angry; I started to pick out my knitting for the smallest things and realized that that way I would have more knitting time while redoing it than if I finished up the project but couldn't afford to buy more yarn. That period of my life taught me to find an appreciation for going slow, having the patience and discipline to correct my mistakes, and enjoying the process more than I ever had. (Also, how to find yarn on the cheap and appreciate every skein!) These days I would definitely say I'm more of a process knitter. I am blessed to have access to much nicer yarn, but I have a lot less time. Yet the time I do find for it is so beautiful and so needed in my stressful, busy days. I love the way hardship early on taught me to appreciate the small, slow moving process so that now I can enjoy the moments when I can craft in peace. I hope I can pass that on to my own kids, but I know they may have to learn that lesson in their own way. I just hope they learn to love the process of whatever creative pursuit captures their hearts.

Cozy fireside knitting. We had a fun snow day with the kiddos today, playing in the snow, playing games, reading, eating, giggling, and toasting marshmallows. But now the munchkins are in bed, Mr. Potion and I can finally have some quiet cozy time. Knitting next to a fire is one of my ultimate happy places. I just love the coziness, the crackling sound, the warmth, and the perfect pairing of a great project with a beautiful blaze and delightful company. A nice glass of wine makes things even more special, but you can bet I'll be sipping slowly while doing all these intricate cables! I'm re-knitting the #savensweater by @hudsonandwestco for my husband. The first go round had a weird spot near the shoulders that puckered, and it was a tad small; so I gulped, cried, and ripped the entire thing. Now I'm redoing it a size larger, and have modified the armhole shaping in hopes of a better fit. 🤞🏻 Hope you are having a lovely night, a safe winter, and good memory making with those you love.
