Ground cover and/or spiller is how I have used this plant and I am amazed every time. The metallic bluish-green undertone in lower lighting and the vibrant purple and burgundy in stronger light have allowed me to compliment and highlight other plants without much effort. It really is an invaluable part of my garden. Now, I have been quite baffled at the ID of this plant for many years. Is it Strobilanthes or is it Hemigraphis? The Hemigraphis alternata we are all familiar with is known as the 'Waffle Plant' and sports some very crinkled leaves. This plant seems to be known as the Flame Ivy and so the confusion remains as to whether it's in fact a form or a completely separate plant. For the sake of distinction, I've ID'd it the way I did and I'll leave this passage as a record. One of our favorite plants that didn’t arrive until summer this year. This is hemigraphis, aka waffle plant, aka flame ivy. It is beautiful in planters in sun to shade, but we think it’s at its most beautiful when left to weave and spill from planters in filtered or morning sun. The leaves turn a striking silvery purple.
