Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus), Kruger National Park, South Africa, © Christian Artuso Named for the phoenix, the Phoeniculidae is a fascinating family of two genera: 4 species called woodhoopoes in one genus & 4 species called scimitarbills in another genus. Today, they are often nestled between the hoopoes and the ground-hornbills in the order Bucerotiformes. A few cool aspects of this family are the way the can climb with their short legs and still tail (which often surprises me because the tail is so long), the way they flock together with males and females using different vocal repertoires, and their ability to protect themselves by excreting foul-smelling chemical compounds. The Green Woodhoopoe is a spectacular bird when you catch them in the light (in shadow they appear all dark). Males are a little larger and have a slightly longer bill. Hoje (28/04) é o dia da Caatinga, um bioma único e diverso, conhecido por sua vegetação adaptada às condições semiáridas e climáticas extremas, típico do sertão nordestino no Brasil. Trata-se de um bioma exclusivamente brasileiro, onde muitas espécies, com suas características individuais, não são encontradas em nenhum outro lugar, a não ser lá. A caatinga abriga uma grande variedade de espécies da fauna e flora, sendo muitas delas endêmicas da região. Dos Xenarthra, são encontrados, por exemplo, o tatu-bola e o tamanduá-bandeira no bioma. É nesse cenário que, em 2021, o projeto Ecologia e Conservação Participativa do Tatu-bola (@ecptatubola ) foi criado como parte do programa EDGE of Existence da Sociedade Zoológica de Londres (@zsledgeofexistence ) na comunidade de Sumidouro, Brotas de Macaúbas, na Bahia. A iniciativa teve início a partir de esforços anteriores de monitoramento do tatu-bola do Nordeste, espécie ameaçada de extinção e endêmica do Brasil. Sabino Canyon Recluse Spider (Loxosceles sabina) Arizona, US Bet you didn’t know we had more than one species of recluse here. This one is considered an endemic to a specific watershed and canyon system in southern Arizona, and this female was HUGE. Little is known about the venom of this species, but like all Sicariidae, it’s thought to be highly cytotoxic. This is the golden bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus)! Also called golden lemurs. Endemic to Madagascar’s southeastern bamboo-laden forests and marshes. 90% of their diet is bamboo, bamboo grasses, and bamboo foliage. The most nutrient-rich part of the giant bamboo is the deadliest, containing cyanide. Their digestive system is adapted to absorb toxins, providing them with food sources unavailable to other animals. Only 250 mature individuals remain wild and continue to decline. Threatened by habitat loss due to slash-and-burn agriculture. They are Critically Endangered. We have spotted the first Brimstone eggs on the Alder Buckthorn Macc Wild have been planting in and around Macclesfield as part of our Brimstone Buddy project! Alder buckthorn is the foodplant for the caterpillars and the bottle-shaped eggs are laid on the underside of the fresh new leaves usually on the sunny side of the plant. Macc Wild have planted over 300 Alder Buckthorn saplings in school grounds, parks and other open spaces to boost numbers of this beautiful insect – one of the earliest of the spring butterflies. We have given out saplings for planting in gardens too so if you have one in your garden look out for female Brimstones – they are a lovely pale green colour – searching for a spot to lay their eggs. #alderbuckthorn #brimstonebutterfly #butterflies #biodiversity

Spot: Cape Kapros German Wreck Location: Skala Kefalonia Dive starts at the shot line that leads close to the wreck and at around 25m depth the pile of war supplies in the shape of a vessel, roughly 16 m long, is visible. Leaving the shot line at around 30 m, divers head towards the wreck “flying” 2-3 m above the bottom, so they do not stir the sand. At the front of the wreck there is a load of 150 mm artillery projectiles and some cables. Picking any side of the wreck and continuing aft, massive white groupers can sometimes be seen in a tunnel they have created bellow the projectiles. This is also where wooden parts of the vessels can be seen exposed. The middle of the wreck is full of items such as projectile fuses, boxes with bullets, small bottles and items of medical supplies and more relics that occasionally are exposed by the currents. The wreck creates a small reef on the sandy bottom, creating a habitant for triggerfish, morays, crabs, nudibranch and more. Returning towards the “bow” more war relics can be found, before dive comes to an end heading to the shot line and initiate the ascend and safety stops.
