There’s a few sayings that come to mind when I think of this post. “All carpenters are not equal at the task”. This is also true in every occupation. Even your doctor so be selective. “Give me a sows ear and I’ll make a silk purse out of it”. Finally, “caulk, putty and paint make a carpenter what he ain’t”. 3rd saying not applicable. This project will likely be shown in a few posts. This has been a fun project for a super couple and their family but it’s presented some challenges. Without becoming too critical, I will just say that as a society we have under valued the workmanship of the framing carpenter way too much. Quality and precision is sorely lacking. Often when compared to the billable hourly rate of other trades he’s the least paid on the totem pole. Likely the bottom guy. Yet, like the totem pole other trades are literally held up and stacked upon his work. His work determines the outcome of so many final finishes. Not to mention the entire structural integrity of your home. Another saying I often refer to is “you can’t start out wrong and come out good on the other side”. I suppose there are other factors that go into a quality framing job of those who do the work but pay has certainly not enticed many to join this trade or to get good at it. It’s not for the weak or those who view book smarts as superior intelligence. No, good carpentry and the carpenter takes years to make and it’s rarely mastered as there are too many aspects for one to experience in a lifetime. There are so many tasks I have yet to do because opportunity hasn’t presented itself. This young man Jayden was a highlight for me at the #worldofconcrete2024 . It was such a a breath of fresh air to meet such a talented young carpenter.
