Five years ago, “MattJE” bought a house in Climate Zone 5A. The attic was mold-infested at the time. He cleaned out the mold and replaced the plastic baffles that create a ventilation channel from soffit to ridge. Then he installed cellulose insulation. Additionally, the GC moved bathroom vents from the soffits to the roof and replaced all the can lights with LED retrofits. (Later that year, the entire roof was replaced; the new roof assembly included an Ice & Water Shield underlayment.) Despite all those efforts, the mold has returned, mostly around the baffles. What’s going on? Building Science Corporation’s Kohta Ueno has a few ideas. One relates to the ventilation strategy. A depressurized attic can suck conditioned air out of the living space below, so Kohta recommends more ventilation at the eaves than at the ridge, which will slightly pressurize the attic to prevent those energy losses. For best results, provide between 50% and 75% of the ventilation space at the eaves, the remainder at the ridge; a 60/40 split is the sweet spot. Air-sealing the attic floor is part of the solution too. Because the previous infrared examination in the attic didn’t find leaks—if there’s minimal airflow, the batt insulation will “mask” the infrared signature of the air leaks—Kohta suggests using blower door pressurization (or depressurization) with an infrared camera. The Hastings Mesa House is a Colorado mountain haven with a 360-degree view of the San Juan ⛰️ on 40 acres. Due to the cold climate, the homeowners were concerned about preserving and maintaining comfort. The wall assembly was designed with double-wall 2x4 framing to create a 12” deep wall cavity. It was filled with a blended system of blown foam and high-density infill (flash and fill), which brings the walls to R-58. Don't miss the third photo for wall depth. The house was designed with large Alpen windows on south and east-facing elevations to maximize daylight and solar gain while maximizing the 💚 views. It has an HRV system, which includes bathroom and kitchen returns and a recirculating range hood. BTB Construction and Consulting utilized Siga Fentrim to help with air sealing and put in a radiant floor heat. Sunday Showcase: Fiberglass Z Girts . We've had lots of questions about these fiberglass z girts from @armatherm and their benefits.  Here's some highlights we've noticed this time around.  . The structure it creates is extremely rigid - "I could stand on these things" . The fiberglass composition reduces thermal bridge significantly . They can be cut with a skill saw which is very familiar to most tradespeople . The pieces are easily modified to create excellent backing for lights, plugs, and various protrusions in the cladding . Mitered corners offer backing to both sides 😍 . Installed with short screws whereas thick insulation and strapping often requires specialized long screws . We taped each course therefore we are encouraging water away from the building at every instance. The pieces are 9 ft long and are gapped at the ends. . They come in various depths. We chose a size 1" bigger than our insulation for an automatic ventilation space (no strapping necessary)  . Thanks to their strength and rigidity and with the appropriate gauge of siding, we are able to space them four feet apart which works great for the 4 ft insulation board. . This week I replaced an aging Amana 80% propane fired furnace and 3 ton AC at end of life. Here are the upgrades that made this a great investment: 1. We went back with a 15 Seer2 heat pump making it a hybrid dual fuel. Since this job is in the south with mild winters, the family will save hundreds every year in energy due to the high cost of LP. And the furnace was upgraded to 95% and properly sized. 2. We downsized to a 2.5 ton and 2 stage outdoor unit thanks to an aggressive load calc and sizing using Conduit Tech . 3. We added a MERV13 AprilAire media filter kit, properly sized for around 0.1" w.c. pressure drop with duct transitions. 4 The crimped flex connections to the return plenum were replaced with hard 90's. The result is 0.5" Total Static. Pretty good for a furnace/ case coil setup. 5. The unsightly wall penetration was replaced with Airex Titan kit. 6. Piping was properly clamped and strapped using unistrut and threaded rod. All that's left is some pipe insulation and commissioning with measureQuick and the TEC True Flow grid. Regretably, I had a brain fart and installed the dryer outside. Not the end of the world but it's a best practice to install it indoors. These are NOT 1 day installs. What surfaces need to be protected? 🏠❓ If AeroBarrier is applied at rough-in or right after drywall is installed, very minimal preparation is required. Vertical surfaces like walls and windows require no covering. All designed openings, such as ducts, electrical and plumbing, must be covered before sealing. How Important Is Insulation? Last week the Koala Insulation of Denver Central team traveled to Conroe, TX to participate in training hosted by The Attic Depot. This was a great opportunity for Koala Insulation teams from around the country to hone skills while we all ensure the best results for our clients. Because we were already there, we took the opportunity to visit Johnson Space Center. (My son is fanatical about aerospace, so how could we not?) While the SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket and the Independence Replica were awesome, nothing struck me so hard as the plaque that read: “Original Boeing 747 insulation as it remained after NASA stripped most of the aircraft’s furnishings and materials to reduce weight”. Insulation is underappreciated, particularly when pulling into the driveway, but it is absolutely essential in the construction of modern buildings to ensure comfort, efficiency, and to the health and safety of building occupants. When the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) was placed into service (and even long before), NASA knew the importance of insulation to the success of its missions. While we’ve come a long way since the 1960’s, even widely utilizing radiant barriers which originated from NASA, many people still opt for a shiny new thing rather than protect their largest investment and compromise comfort, efficiency, and the health and safety of their loved ones in some cases. Details...small details and getting them right makes things last as they should or fail prematurely, after which expensive repairs are needed that are much harder to figure out after the fact than when things are being done the first time. Thousands of small details really add up to make a poor or a well done project. Projects can look good when done but this doesn't mean they are good. GCs who rely on their subs to manage this are not GCs they're skimmers...here we work side by side with another GC who leaves everything to us to sort out with their trades who otherwise don't take the time or care to figure out details properly. It's not their job to figure this stuff out nor their fault when things fail in the future, and it's not that they don't care or want to do things right. They're typically specialists in their trade and don't have the time or burden to do other people's jobs for them without being paid to do so, meanwhile the skimmers get paid for doing almost nothing other than false sales work to win jobs. It's a shame, and very hard for the average homeowner to know any of this. The skimmers count on it. Hiring the right GC costs more but in the long run costs less. Something shiny from the lab on a Friday. Just to be clear, the lab isn't operated by magpies. What you can see here at x15 magnification is mica. It's commonly found in Cornwall sands and is one of several reasons our local sands aren't ideal for lime work. Mica increases water demand in mixes, which causes a decrease in strength and an increase in slump, which means overall poorer workability. #mica #buildingscience

Thermal Comfort and the Human Physiology Thermal comfort is closely linked with the human heat balance. Generally, human beings perceive an environment as thermally comfortable when the ambient temperature is slightly lower than than the temperature at which they begin to perspire. The human being keeps its internal temperature of 37 degC constant even in the case of considerable fluctuations in the external temperature. With the body at rest and an ambient temperature of 20 degC, the body’s total heat loss is ~46% in the form of radiation, ~33% by convection, ~19% by evaporation through the skin and ~2% by respiration. Cape Cod Community College’s Frank and Maureen Wilkens Science and Engineering Center is a net-positive energy building designed to transform the heart of campus. The project approaches sustainability through a holistic and global approach, implementing a range of moves including passive solar shading overhangs, air-source heat pumps, high performance materials with low embodied carbon and the expansion of the range of thermal comfort and lighting power density. Combined with on-site photovoltaics, the project achieves net-positive energy use. The project’s thermally modified wood rainscreen façade is a study of the modern expression of vernacular Cape Cod architecture while reducing embodied carbon. Early lifecycle assessments identified the immense carbon savings of wood over fiber cement. The design team did not stop there, furthering reductions by peeling back unnecessary finishes like carpet and ceilings.
