#FoodieFriday In El Nido 🇵🇭 We witnessed the extraordinary transformation of cashew nuts from fruit to snack 🌰🍃 It was fascinating to see cashews in their natural state, still attached to their fruit. The process of turning these raw nuts into the crunchy treats we love is both intricate and labor-intensive. After harvesting, the nuts undergo careful drying and roasting, a crucial step to remove the toxic shell oil and reveal the delicious nut inside. It's a journey from tree to bag that adds a whole new layer of appreciation for these little snacks. Experiencing this process in the lush landscape of El Nido made it even more special. #PhilippinesNature #ElNidoDiscoveries #CashewNutJourney #TropicalTreats #PhilippineAgriculture #CashewFruitToNut #ElNidoAdventures #SustainableFarming #FarmToBag #NutHarvest #CashewProcessing #ElNidoExperiences #TropicalFarming #SnackStories #AgricultureLife #PhilippineCuisine #NaturalSnacks #TravelAndTaste #ElNidoDiaries #FromTreeToTreat

Discover the source of chocolate - The cocoa fruit 🌱🍫 Most of us know that chocolate is made from cocoa beans, but have you ever seen the fruit they came from? These are cocoa fruits, grown in the tropical rainforests north and south of the equator. 🌴💚 Cocoa fruits are harvested and carefully opened to reveal the precious cocoa beans inside. These beans go through fermentation and are then dried, becoming the essential ingredient for our delicious bars. 🍫😍 #chocolateorigins #cocoafruit #cocoabeans #beantobar #tropicaltreasures #fromtreetotreat #plantbased #chocolatelove

Today is International Rural Women’s Day, recognizing “the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.” - @unitednations We introduced you to Chilmize (left) back in March. Chilmize is a cacao farmer in Haiti who works with Produits Des Iles SA (PISA) and Uncommon Cacao to reach the consumer. On the right is Fenise, the manager at the post-harvest processing facility at PISA. We invite you to celebrate these incredible women on this day and every day by thoughtfully purchasing chocolate that improves the lives of women and supports their contributions across the globe, and where no human has suffered along the supply chain. There are over 1,300 female cacao farmers in the @uncommoncacao. This transparent relationship nurtured between Uncommon and these farmers increases access to revenue, support for their farms and quality of life! We work with @uncommoncacao to import @pisahaiti beans. We use this cacao in our single origin Haiti chocolate bar, our baked goods and in a custom blend of chocolate we make for @flourist. #internationalruralwomensday #womensupportingwomen #fromtreetotreat

Time to get Roasting! #FromTreetoTreat • Once the cocoa beans are cleaned and sorted, they're gently roasted for 30 minutes to two hours to darken the color and enhance flavor • The beans can be roasted for different amounts of time and at different temperatures, depending on the size and the desired flavor

9/25/2020, 4:30:48 PM

#FromTreetoTreat The next part of the journey our chocolate makes before becoming a decadent treat... It's time to dry! • The fermented beans are spread out in wooden boxes or bamboo mats and left to dry in the sun for five to ten days • The beans are stirred often for more even drying

9/11/2020, 4:00:18 PM

#FromTreetoTreat Friday! Up next... Fermentation: • The same day the cacao beans are harvested, they’re put into wooden boxes to begin fermentation. Fermenting causes heat, which prevents the beans from sprouting. • The beans are “turned” or moved from one box to another every 24-48 hours for even fermentation • They are covered with banana leaves to keep out the air • During fermentation, which lasts six or more days, the pulp liquifies and drains away

9/4/2020, 4:00:21 PM

Let's continue our chocolate journey! #FromTreetoTreat Cacao Pods: • With a little dull machete, workers break the pods, inspect them and separate them into fine cacao and overripe cacao • It takes several hundred processed cacao beans to make 1 pound of chocolate

8/28/2020, 4:00:20 PM

Next up on the journey of chocolate… #FromTreetoTreat Harvesting! • The cacao pods take 5-6 months to grow, then several weeks to ripen • The fruit pods are ready to harvest when they turn yellow, orange or red, depending on the type of Cacao tree • They are harvested by hand using a machete #journeyofchocolate #schakoladchocolatefactory #stpetefoodies #chocolateshopstpete

8/21/2020, 4:00:04 PM

It's #FromTreeToTreat Friday! Here is the next part of the journey... The Cocao Tree... • Blooms and bears fruit at the same time all year long • The petals on the blooms are curled so tightly that only a tiny fly called a chocolate midge fits inside to pollinate them! #cacaobloom #schakoladchocolatefactory #chocolateeducation

8/14/2020, 4:00:55 PM

Starting today and on future Fridays, we will be sharing the journey of chocolate #FromTreeToTreat "piece by piece". Get ready for some fun facts and an inside understanding of the process it takes for our chocolate to make it from tropical trees to a decadent and delicous treat in our shop! The Cacao Tree - Fun Facts: • Cacao trees grow 20 degrees north and south of the equator • They thrive on tropical rains and partial shade • It takes about five years for the tree to bear fruit! #cacaotree #journeyofchocolate #schakoladchocolatefactory

Purchasing a chocolate treat made with our chocolate supports women locally and globally! Haiti Origin Story: Produits Des Iles SA (PISA) is committed to changing the way cacao is processed and exported from Haiti. Historically, large export companies have purchased dried, unfermented, low quality cacao from smallholder farmers at prices below the commodity market. PISA’s launch in 2014 of their centralized processing facility represented a revolutionary change in Haiti’s cacao production system. Now, PISA is the only company purchasing and centrally fermenting wet cacao, and as a result are able to sell it at a higher price for its higher quality. Farmers now earn approximately four-times as much money as they did before PISA, and are simultaneously incentivized to protect their trees from the environmentally degrading charcoal market. #internationalwomensday #womensupportingwomen #fromtreetotreat
