Remember the kids will need us today. Can’t attend GCSE results day - something I always do because those kids should know they matter beyond the piece of paper. For anyone who has a kid/relative getting theirs today, here’s the craic: These results (and 2020s) are much more of a reflection on the actual student than one-off exams would be. No kid is going to randomly flunk or surprisingly exceed. They are going to receive the actual grade that they deserve based on the effort and ability they have demonstrated over time. It’s a much better, more accurate system than terminal exams, that their teachers have spent countless hours ensuring are exactly reflective of the kid. I know I’m late but these are the results I received this year! I am very happy with what I achieved and every single person who took exams (but didn’t sit them) this year deserves to be so so proud. I know I’m a little late, but here are my GCSE results 2020✨✨I know we didn’t sit the exams, but as I’m sure you all did, I put in so much hard work and commitment preparing for these exams. Disclaimer: success is relative, if I’m unhappy with a grade that your happy about, that’s okay. Success is dependant on the person and their goals. My initial reaction: when I first got my grades, I was so upset. I cried for the whole morning. I think it was because a couple of my subjects didn’t reflect all the hard work and extra work I had put in. However, looking at them now, I am happy with them. I feel I could have done better in a few subjects had I taken the exam, but of course that wasn’t possible. The subject that upset me the most, was biology. Most of my time and energy went into revising biology, and I improved massively between year 10 to year 11. In all of my end of unit tests in year 11, I received either a grade 8 or 9. However, I was unwell for mocks, and received a grade 7 on my mock (one mark from an 8). Because of my mock grade, I was graded at a 7. I personally think it’s rather unfair to let one mock grade overpower all the grade 8s and 9s I received on other tests, but I guess it is what it is. My plan now is to just put all of this behind me and focus on the future. I am taking Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Economics and I will keep you all updated along the way! Back in March, we had an assembly with our Year 11 students just before the nation’s schools were closed for Covid-19 lockdown and we told them that we would ensure they had an opportunity to show what they understood and had learned. We urged them to keep learning. We never predicted what was then going to happen: students from this year group not returning to education or training until September, all GCSEs cancelled, schools submitting Centre Assessed Grades, their grades initially being calculated according to an algorithm using each student’s ranking and allocating grades to each subject based on its historic results for the last three years and finally that the Centre Assessed Grades would be the ones awarded. Uckfield College’s teachers did an extremely professional job in ranking the students in each subject and calculating their predicted grades. They ensured that all the evidence for every student was considered and the final ‘Centre Assessed Grade’ included how students performed in class, in homework, in ‘trial’ exams and other assessments. The grades that we sent to the exam boards were a fully rounded assessment of what each student’s strengths were in each subject. Subject teachers’ grades went through four rounds of moderation before we sent them off to the exam boards. When the news came that these grades were going to be used to award the final GCSE grades, we were sure that they were fair. So, every student in this year group can be absolutely certain that their GCSE grades were what they had worked hard for and what they deserved. After a year that included so much uncertainty, this year group did get rewarded for what they understood and had learned. Principal, Hugh Hennebry said, “Our 2020 Year 11 were a great year group. They were intelligent, curious, eager, ready to learn, focused and ambitious. We are all extremely proud of what they have learned and how they have grown into confident, articulate and caring young people in their time at Uckfield College. #GCSEresults day last week was a huge success for our learners, with many of them now well placed to progress to further training, education or employment. In 2019, this learner joined our animal care programme with maths GCSE attached. At the beginning she lacked confidence in her maths abilities, however down the line her participation increased massively and she happily supported peers during lessons.
