So, this was a bitch. My fenders are much wider than stock so I had to widen the running boards. You can't just run a weld on the inserted cut strips of steel or everything will warp to Hell... especially when it's 5 ft long and it's thin 20 gauge. So basically I had to spot 960 welds while cooling each one with compressed air. Took a long time but the good news is no #warpage and they turned out perfect. Weld grind, weld grind. Part 2. "Why is it taking so long?" Look closely at this decklid. (Currently in 2 coats of epoxy Primer) There is nothing about this that is anything close to a stock Volkswagen decklid. Custom hinges, hydraulic shocks. Dual intake fans, custom vents from a 68 Bus. It is a one-off decklid, I can't just go out and buy another one. If I was painting this car white, I would have been done 6 months ago but I'm painting a one stage Rat Rod black, which is harder to get perfect than many 2 stage paint jobs. You can't just pile on clear and fix it in the cut and buff...you get one shot and that's it... 1 stage Satin Black is non forgiving soo...months and months of laser straight bodywork, blocking, sanding, guide coat repeat. That being said, I am confident this shit will rock once it's finally in the booth... it's funny how everybody always asks "who painted your car?" but few ask "who did the months and months of body work and prep before the paint? Part 1. People keep asking me "What's taking so long?" This question I get all the time. I guess if I was filming and posting content every day people would understand. Finished up the carb windows. Here's a look at the inside and outside with the faceplate off. I rolled the edges over with a body hammer, back cut them with a zip disc, then filed down the excess steel. This way no cuts or scratches when working on the motor. 1/4 inch thick steel plates on the inside, incredibly strong and much stronger than it was before installing. Two different options, both seem to work. No matter how much measuring you do, it always changes once you get the motor in. Very happy, both of the fans clear the carb if I run center mount and the hydraulic shocks clear if I run dual carbs as well.
