For several weeks, an encampment of unhoused residents located in Harbor City has endured fence repair, leading to daily threats of sweeps. Encampment residents shared their frustration and confusion with Knock LA, and most reported not being provided any offer of shelter beds or storage for their belongings. The encampment has existed in its current iteration for several years, and many of the residents arrived there after leaving from a nearby area called “the tracks,” located in a field nearby on land owned by the County of Los Angeles. "I started playing trumpet in 6th grade in a town in Mississippi. I enjoyed every moment of it. In 7th grade I played in concert band because I didn’t make the cut for symphonic band. So that entire year I worked my butt off so I wouldn’t be in concert band. But I moved during the summer so I ended up at Dana during 8th grade. I had the best year in band of my entire life. I made so many memories and new friends. Now I’m here at SPHS I look forward to making more friends and memories. I’m grateful for the opportunities band has afforded me and can’t wait for the future. Going to DC would be the highlight of my band career and if I could just inspire one kid to join a band and make a difference it would make me feel so happy. I don’t just play trumpet for myself. " I started volunteering 5 years ago when my eldest was a freshman. I have been hands on ever since and have seen first hand how all of these kids have thrived in this music program. When they came in as freshmen with no or very little self confidence, unsure of where life would take them and then leave with such high hopes and strong work ethics, it truly amazes me! My eldest is now a music major at CSULB and I still have another son in the program as a Junior!! The kids and staff go above and beyond, set goals throughout the semester/ competition season and achieve them together as A TEAM! There is so much behind the scenes throughout the season that most people don't see, for a 8-9 minute show, that you don't truly appreciate what these kids and staff really do unless you are there with them. Going on 5 years of seeing it firsthand, I am still in awe as to how a great show develops, how hard these kids work, how hard the staff works!! 4 consecutive years of winning the Southern California AND LAUSD AND WGI Championships is proof that these kids are worthy to Represent San Pedro AND California in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D. They make history once again with a triple win...taking the SCSBOA, LAUSD, and WGA 3 years in a roll!! 2018-19...another Back to Back in 2A!!!
