What Dr Tim Clarey says can be summed up very neatly in the words of Jesus himself: “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” (John 3:12) In other words, the Bible isn’t merely a collection of abstract theological writings. Rather, it tells us about how God has acted in time and space—in 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺. In fact, the entire salvation narrative—including, ultimately, Jesus death and resurrection—is rooted in 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 that traces all the way back to the Garden of Eden (very good creation, first Adam, death entering the world at the Fall, etc.). If that history is wrong, that severely undermines our understanding of the later work of Jesus (last Adam, conquering death, etc.). If only some of the Bible’s apparent history is meant to be taken at ‘face value’, or if only some of its apparent history is actually 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵—then which bits are accurate, and who decides? And how can people truly trust a book that they think is wrong about the basic facts about the world and history? On the contrary, the Bible’s history—all the way back to Genesis—𝘪𝘴 accurate. When people are shown that the Bible lines up very well with the real world, it frees them to believe the rest of what the Bible claims—about sin, salvation, and so much more!
