Mountain biking is one of my favourite activities, I’m an outdoor instructor but mainly a cycling instructor and absolutely love teaching adults and children how to cycle. It was a day with a plan, but mother nature said “nope!” Visibility was very low at the outset, but I was proud of how smoothly Nina and I handled navigation above treeline, in a white-out, in complex terrain with nothing but our maps and our intuition. Soon, though, the storm howled harder and we went from low viz to no viz. There was a lot of wind-loading going on, and we couldn’t visually confirm the slope angles we were traveling on. We decided to pull the ripcord. It took a long while to get down. Vertigo made it tough to sense the snow surface turn by turn, but we swapped leads, making two or three turns, then letting the other follow. A few capers later, we hit the flats below and got safely back into the hut. We took advantage of the ensuing restful afternoon by the fire playing Yahtzee and sipping beer. The bonus: we charged our bodies’ batteries for a big day starting the next morning. • So I did a thing • I’m so excited to announce that I have been selected to be an Ordnance Survey champion this year!!! ❤️🧭 I’ve always loved maps, being outside and planning routes. A few months ago, I was scrolling through stories and saw that Ordnance Survey were taking applications for OS champions. My heart sank as I knew I would love to have a go, but the deadline was the next day and I was doubtful that a new mum of 2 (my son had just turned 3 months) would be what they were after. But I decided to be brave and apply and wonderfully got accepted. My hiking account started off two years ago as a safe space for me to include pretty pictures of nice walks that I went on, but it has since evolved into a community that I love and have formed real relationships through. I cannot wait to see what being part of the OS champions will bring. I hope you will enjoy the journey with me! I’m looking forward to sharing hikes, paddles and the realities of getting outside with a young family with you ❤️ so…Tomorrow marks the start of National Walking Month and it is my aim to get outside each day. I’m looking forward to planning some longer walks, but also just nipping around the block with the buggy if that’s what the day and my life allows!
