“Man cannot Do.” Everything we ‘do’ just happens in us, like the weather. We’re transforming stations for forces beyond our control. Tap to continue reading… Our emotional motivations and reactions are out of our control, our appetites dominate, and our intellect serves mainly to satisfy and justify these other urges. And most of the time, we act out of dead habit. We’re stuck with our fixed, inflexible reactions to experiences and feelings. This can be pointed out to a person, but they are unlikely to accept the real extent of the situation. You may have realized some of this yourself at times with a shock. But you didn’t know what to do and fell back to sleep. Rather than let that happen again, try to embrace the Terror of the Situation. Seize the opportunity to find out how to become a real person. We can gain the inner unity to become real people. The only tool we can use for that is our attention. Using attention to work against our automatic appetites and reactions we can generate the inner friction that can transform our inner life. Modern man has not only forgotten that this kind of work exists, but also that it is necessary for his own evolution. This kind of inner unity results in Real Will, which isn’t just doing whatever you want. Real Will means consciously choosing and setting a course and seeing it through no matter the difficulty or discomfort. What does it take to make anything happen? At the most basic level, how many factors do you need to bring something into being? Keep reading to find out! Fire: the affirming force. Water: the denying force. But another force is needed to make steam. What is it? A pot. Without a third, reconciling force, the fire and water can’t interact for long enough for something new to be created. We think of cause and effect as linear: a billiard ball hits another, and because of this sets the second one in motion. In reality, every thing and every result in creation comes into existence through the confluence of three forces. This is known as the Law of Three, or the Sacred Triamazikamno. The Holy-Affirming force presents an attempt to cause a change. The Holy-Denying force represents resistance to that change, and sometimes (it is itself) that which is to be changed or the material out of which something is to be created. The Holy-Reconciling force creates the conditions for the first two forces to make the necessary contact and interact. The result of the three forces meeting in this way is always some new condition, substance, or thing. Niall Fergusson's book couple of years back seems to echo the long winding dusted roads of history. Core idea being: despite scientific progress, the collective capability to handle disaster is deteriorating. And Niall believes, as he cites in the tag line of the book, "the politics of catastrophe" to be one of the core problems. It feels similar to the arguments by Joseph Tainter in his work on the collapse of civilizations. Growth on back of complexity reaches a point where complexity trembles and collapses under its own weight. It isn't just politics of catastrophe as Niall points. In our book, Meditations of 21st Century Hunter Gatherer, we make a point that man is not just a social animal, or an economic animal (homo economicus), but man is a political animal already. And there is a need to cultivate Political Intelligence over time. Because the trope isn't just "politics of catastrophe"...you can extend it to "politics of change management" or "politics of workplaces" or "politics of families" or "politics of neighborhoods" and so on.
