"Sorry, my horse is usually not this fidgety!" —most clients It's easy to get nervous or feel embarrassed when your best pony decides standing for the camera is NOT his thing...but I promise you're not alone! (Guess whose horse danced around for his entire session? Uh...mine 🤦♀️) The best solution is to be proactive. I always recommend longing beforehand (yep, even your lazy, bombproof saint), because every horse gets a little nervous about the break from routine caused by portraits. A little exercise also helps them not feed off any nerves or stress you might have! I'll go over even more tips with you as we prepare you for your session, too. But if we're in the moment and your horse doesn't want to play "pose and snuggle," don't panic! I have several tricks to help us work through his wiggles (and sometimes that's just being patient or trying something new), and we'll do what is best for you and your horse. Above all, though, don't feel nervous or embarrassed! I come to portrait sessions with a few main goals. First, of course, to make sure you have a lot of fun loving on your sweet horse. Next, I make it a priority to pose you and your horse so that you both look your absolute best. Sometimes it'll feel weird or silly, but I promise you'll love the result 😉 My final instruction is usually just "snuggle your horse" Because you can't pose deep, true passion. You can't fake that look in your eye. Do you have a favorite riding “hack” you love to use at the barn? My favorite is lavender! 💜 Studies have found the scent to be calming—even reducing horses’ heart rates—and it’s easy to apply. You can get a fancy essential oil from your favorite MLM Facebook friend, but I just bought a roll-on tube of it at Walgreens. If I sense that Herbie is anxious, I’ll rub a tiny bit just below his nostrils, and I can actually see him get less antsy in minutes. QUICK TIP: prevent hangry ponies 🙅 I always photograph horses and riders for portraits are as the sun sets or rises—it makes everyone look great + adds a gorgeous, golden glow to your images. Problem: that’s also right around feeding time. And I promise your horse is going to be more concerned about dinner than about standing still and cuddling with you. But the fix is easy! Give him his grain (or at least a snack) while you’re prepping him for your session. Let him stand with some hay while you change your clothes and fix your hair. Tucking your arms close to your side as you hold your phone gives your arms more stability, meaning you keep the phone more steady and reduces “camera shake” ... a huge culprit of that annoying blur! There are so many amazing ways horses influence our lives & who we are. I’ve always felt that growing up around horses has made me more tuned into body language, so I can better read how someone is feeling about a situation or a conversation. This helped me so much as an editor for the Paint Horse Journal, because I could direct an interview a certain direction based off the nonverbal cues of my subject. ...but then also sometimes I still misread cues and think someone's going in for a hug when they're not. And then I—a not-overly-huggy-person—am suddenly the kind of person who gives unwanted hugs. And this is why I have anxiety 🙃 How about you? QUICK TIP: A simple way to make any picture of your horse look better is to grab his attention! Getting him to perk his ears brightens up his whole expression and adds positive energy to the image. I have a whole bag of weird tricks to get any horse to pay attention during a session, but when you’re at a show or the barn, whatever you can grab works: kick some sand, whistle, crinkle a wrapper, etc. The BIG key is to only have ONE person doing this, whether that’s you or a helper. Especially at horse shows, I’ll see a whole group of family members all making sounds and waving things to get one horse’s attention for a quick candid. But this becomes too busy, and the horse tends to tune it all out. When I take portraits, I always have a single helper responsible for keeping the horse’s attention. This helps keep the horse from losing interest or getting impatient.
