⚓️ Anchor Brewing, the oldest craft brewer in the US, is sadly no more. Its history dates back to the Gold Rush, when adventurers flocked to the Golden State, including German brewer Gottlieb Brekle. He bought a beer and billiards saloon and started brewing. Due to the booming San Francisco port, he named it the Anchor Brewing Company. Surviving the 1906 earthquake, prohibition, both world wars, and a near collapse in 1965, Anchor persevered. But 127 years later, they sadly went out of business just a few months ago. A true loss. The downfall began in 2017 when they were acquired by the Japanese beverage giant Sapporo. The pandemic was the final blow, as 70% of their sales came from restaurants and cafes. A rebranding attempt to thrive in supermarkets was in vain. Personally, I find it extremely regrettable. My love for IPAs and craft beer was ignited by Anchor. Even after more than 25 years, Liberty Ale and Anchor Steam remain unrivaled for me. I luckily managed to grab 24 bottles from their last batch, and I'll savor them with honor and respect. The Anchor legend deserves nothing less. Hopefully, someone can carry on this West Coast IPA blueprint. For now, let's raise a glass on Anchor! Christmas (Ale) is canceled this year 😢. This week gave us the very sad news that @anchorbrewing will be closing their doors after 127(!!!) years. @trinammg @kcvphd and I visited in December 2018, and it was probably my most favorite brewery tour I’ve ever been on. I stole a hop bud (just one, don’t yell at me) and kept in in my pocket as a souvenir until it practically disintegrated, I liked it there so much. The Fresh Hops boys headed out to San Francisco on Thursday for an emergency edition of the podcast this week. Like many of you we were very sad to hear the news of the impending closure of @anchorbrewing, and we had to get to the brewery to grab a piece of craft beer history to save, savor, and one last time #RaiseYourAnchor to Americas first craft brewery. Obviously the reason for our visit was bittersweet, but the vibes were full of love, memories, and reverence for something that everyone in attendance shared a common bond (& a pint or 4) over. We ran into old friends & made new ones (s/o to firefighter Dan! 🍻) and we recorded a few thoughts from the birthplace of American craft beer. On the news Anchor Brewing Co. is shutting down: 💔 I met my husband because of Anchor Brewing Co., spent a significant part of my 30s there, and learned about its history and integral role in the fabric of San Francisco’s culture. It’s survived earthquakes, fires, and prohibition and has been closed many times before (the Chronicle lamented in 1959 “the taps are running dry today on a full-flavored souvenir of San Francisco’s past”). But like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, much like San Francisco, it was saved from the brink. In the 60s, Fritz Maytag (yes, of the washing machines) famously rescued it after a last pint at the Old Spaghetti Factory and revolutionized the craft beer industry. I can only hope that this isn’t the end of Anchor. For now, I can thank it for the memories and for what it’s meant to San Francisco and chase my tears with a Steam beer. I can raise my anchor to all those who have made this place and this beer so special for the last 127 years🍻 #anchorbrewing #raiseyouranchor
