Having flown over 7 million miles, I typically avoid American Airlines. However, I had a speaking engagement in Dallas, and given the flight schedules, I was forced to choose American since flying Delta offered no backup flight options. I always prefer having at least one or two backup flights. I arrived in Dallas (DFW) and waited 30 minutes for my bag, which never arrived. I asked the baggage clerk if he could locate it. He looked it up on his computer and said, “Your bag is no longer in the airport.” I replied, “The bag never came up from the plane.” At that instant, my cell phone rang. The voice on the other end said, “This is Bruno with American Airlines baggage. Are you traveling through DFW today?” I replied, “I am not going through; I am here in Dallas now, waiting for my bag.” Bruno then said, “Well, our routing tag got torn off and we didn’t know where to send your bag, but your bag has green duct tape on it with this number, so I thought I would call it before sending it to dead baggage storage.” I said, “I am standing upstairs in baggage claim here at DFW.” He replied, “Okay, I will send it up.” Three minutes later, he did just that. Point of the story: Bruno went the extra mile and demonstrated thoughtfulness, kindness, caring, and empathy. We need more people like Bruno, and fewer clients feeling as if they are headed to dead bag storage. And yes, with your cell # on ugly green duct tape on your bag, NOBODY ever mistakes it for theirs. We all say we are aware of the words we use, both in conversation and in written form. And yes, words are powerful and can bring success or deliver failure. Asking a prospect, "Does this make sense?" subliminally is very condescending and is second only to the longtime favorite, "Are you with me?" "Is this helpful?" is far better. Also, writing to impress or to be clever is a real temptation sometimes. When I was wrestling with the title of my just released book, "100 Proven Ways to Acquire and Keep Clients for Life" (https://richardweylman.com/100provenways/), my good friend Eric McDermott said to me, “Richard, clarity beats clever.” Thank you! Lesson learned; lesson taken. Each of us can elevate the words we use and speak to people in plain, positive language. Positive, productive people place a priority on producing pleasant perceptions. A great case in point is a printing company in Port Charlotte, Florida. They have signs in front of their office that say, 'PARKING FOR MONARCH DIRECT CUSTOMERS ONLY.' We all know what the rest of the sign typically says, except it doesn’t at Monarch. Nope, their sign says... PARKING FOR MONARCH DIRECT CUSTOMERS ONLY ALL OTHERS WILL SOON BE CUSTOMERS And their business is booming. Are you positively messaging into the marketplace, “This is where you want to be?" I spoke with a CEO recently about moving his business to the next level. It was interesting that the first three strategic points I mentioned, he said, “Yes, I know that.” My question back to him was, “If you know these things, why aren’t you growing 22-25% per year?” He had no answer. Any action, whether it is growth, restructuring, or hiring, requires: 1: More awareness of the situation, the needs of others, and our own shortcomings. God knows we all have at least a few. 2: A clear sense and statement of purpose. It’s not just your “why,” as Simon Sinek importantly has made us realize, but what makes you and your business distinct from all others, as I discussed in my previous book, The Power of Why -Breaking Out in A Competitive Marketplace (https://lnkd.in/d-YSqUKc) 3: Thoroughness of thought is not so that you can always be right, but rather the decisions you do make are relevant and comprehensive. And you have a clear understanding of the impact of those decisions, short AND long-term, on you and others. Action Step: Assess what you know and need to do…and start doing it with this guidance. Have you ever needed to get a roll of quarters for parking meters, the laundromat, the car wash, the vending machine or for your business? Last week I needed a couple rolls of quarters to keep in my car console for parking meters. I walked into a Crews Bank and Trust branch in Sarasota. I handed the teller a $20.00 bill and asked for 2 rolls of quarters please. He said “Do you have an account here?" I said, “No I was just walking by and saw you were open.” He said, “If you don’t have an account, we can’t help you.” Ok then…I thought, let’s see if another bank does the same thing. I stopped into a branch of Centennial Bank, handed the teller $20.00, and asked for two rolls of quarters. My good friend and spiritual dad, Ken Clary, lives in Atlanta and is 94 years old. For more than 60 years, he was the number-one manufacturer’s representative for industrial water heaters and boilers in the country. Ken said he knew from his first sales call right out of college that relationships would be the key to getting his heaters specified on a job by an engineer. The products would change, but the relationships he built would last. As a result, nearly every day of the week for six decades (!), he took an engineer to breakfast and another to lunch. As a rainmaker who sold tens of thousands of commercial heaters, he focused on building a valued relationship with each person because, as he said, “They are not just engineers or clients; they are also my friends.” He epitomizes that indeed friend raising precedes fundraising. To this day, even in his “retirement,” he has breakfast or lunch several days a week with these “friends.” There is a great lesson here for all who want to create a sustainable business. Build rock-solid relationships by taking a personal interest in each of your clients and treating them as people. When people break bread together, a stronger relationship is on the menu.
