Pietro De Laurentis: Wang Xizhi's "Lanting Collection" and da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" own the same cultural status A few days ago, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforretti, who was on a mission in space, wrote this famous passage by Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi on social media, in Chinese, Italian and English respectively, while travelling over China on the International Space Station, borrowing the ancient Chinese view of the universe to express her soaring thoughts as she was contemplating the universe, which sparked a lot of discussion among netizens across the globe, and the "Preface to the Lanting Collection" thus became known to the world. On 20 October, on the occasion of the Italian Language Week film night held at InterCulture Space located at Huangpu Ancient Port in Guangzhou, Professor Pietro De Laurentis, an Italian sinologist and calligrapher who teaches at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, spoke to us about the connection between the "Preface to the Lanting Collection" and the Italian language.
