We sorted books. We had a WVON spotlight. And then, the big day arrived: The Midwest Impact Day of Service (MIDS) 2023 - Seeing Black in REaD! The #ChicagoDeltas had an exciting day of activities that included an interactive panel discussion on the importance of literacy and telling our stories through journaling as well as a poetry slam. There was storytelling, crafts and face painting for kids. We had a resource fair to share community resources. We offered opportunities for participants to register to vote and to get a library card. We connected with high-school students by participating in the Chicago Park District's Teens in the Park (TIP) Fest. Most importantly, we had a book fair to distribute free books, many of which are on banned book lists. The impact was real: We collected and distributed a total of 1,005 books, of which 507 are on banned lists. In 1930, our Sorority started the Delta Book Mobile that transported books to citizens and communities that did not have access to libraries. Today, our chapters across the world continue this literacy initiative in a variety of ways. Our Chapter annually donates books written by and about African Americans to a library in Baldwin County. We understand the importance of literacy and representation and education to everyone in our county. On June 21, 2023, our chapter members donated several books to the Daphne Public Library. Sorors of RHPV painted Lawndale a bit more red this weekend as part of the city's 2023 Youth Parade and Spring Extravaganza. The wave of red through the streets got the attention. Then our booth shared information about our youth focused programs including scholarships, Delta GEMS and Delta Academy, and the annual Living History Museum.
