Drastic changes in weather conditions call for drastic changes to our Funny Car. In this week's #TechTalkTuesday, we're covering what gets changed! Gainesville gave us high 80° air temps, 105+° track temps, and 140 water grains. St. Louis gave us high 50° air temps, track temps between 65°-75°, & 30 water grains. These changes in temperatures and water grains significantly impact how the car makes horsepower, and therefore how it must be set up. St. Louis saw us put head gaskets on that were .020 thicker than what we had in Gainesville so we had less compression -- .020 may not sound like much, but even .005 can make a big difference! We had anywhere from 4.0-4.5% less blower overdrive in the cooler conditions. The fuel we ran in St. Louis contained about .3 of a percent less nitro than we ran in Gainesville, and we increased the fuel volume going into the engine by about 2%. We took a degree of timing out of the ignition map & sped up the clutch application, & all of these changes combined to give us some pretty good laps in the cooler conditions😎 Crew Chief @jimoberhofer notes, "The quality of air we had in St. Louis was significantly better than what we had in Gainesville. It was much easier to make horsepower in St. Louis. The static altimeter was very close, but that's where the similarities ended. We had more heat and more water in the air in Gainesville, and that makes it harder to make power. The air in St. Louis was cooler and dryer, and that made it much easier to make power because you didn't have to tune the mechanical numbers of the tuneup up so much in order to make horsepower.
