One of my students is constantly looking for things to chew and often asks for mints (@mentosuk is their go to choice.. wish I was sponsored by them or could get some free now and then for the amount I buy 😂😂) but they also recognise that they are "addicted to them" - their words, and don't want to upset their stomach, so we had a chat about other chewy things [they're not the type of kid who will use chewelry or any kind of fidget like that, they need the sensory feedback of strong taste alongside the chew] . Believe it or not, I'm using these @widgitsoftware images to help my students begin to understand simultaneous equations next week 😀 I love this topic, it's my fave, but ~so many~ students have the fear of algebra!! .. I do a simple lesson of menu making (they must choose 2 items, can be multiple e.g. 2 burgers + 5 fries and I'll give them a total) ... historically I've provided them with their orders, but in my current setting I have small groups so I can allow them to choose, and have minimised the choice! .. The English teacher and I buddied up to put together a couple of GCSE/ functional skills mocks for our young people (1 maths, 1 English paper) and last week we gave them their results in an envelope like they would their real results 👨🏻‍🎓 and then some feedback. ... This was only their second time at completing any paper in exam conditions and they did incredibly well, I'm so freaking proud of them all ❤️ ... We have a "secret friend" thing that we do at work where we sign up if we're willing to and we are assigned a secret friend that is a member of staff we look out for without them knowing and then do things now and then to brighten their day 🌞 ... a bar of chocolate on their desk/in their locker, a post-it note of something positive that someone said that week, etc. Nothing too costly, no pressure, no telling 🤫 ... I've been using lots of concrete (hands-on, manipulative) tools and resources to teach inequalities and how to represent and interpret them on number lines this week, including the open ○ and closed ● circles by using transparent counters with laminate cards and usual counters with coloured cards 😀 . I led our teacher/ STA training yesterday after work as it was based on CPA maths and white rose and I loved it... but more importantly so, it seemed, did my colleagues 😀 I started with a starter that I came across from the Maths Hub when I went on a full day course/ training there and then I basically ran thru how to use @whiteroseeducation website with some ✨️ Top Tips ✨️ in my opinion having used it for years. ... I did a break out activity where staff were to use the White Rose SoL for their next topic (I'd already printed it in part) and create activities or lessons they could use in upcoming lessons - I made sure to bring along plenty of concrete resources that would link and be useful for the topics they were planning for 🎲🟡🔴🪙🔳 ... I used my #TuffTray quite a bit this week [topic is Straight Line Graphs] to break down how to go from equation to plotting, and the first step is to recognise that the equation can be written, or processed, as a function 😀 ... 🧲 I made up my Tuff Tray in 2 different ways to support my learners at different levels, and also had matching cards for their independent part of the lesson/ recall next lesson 🧩 [we had the = written on the Tuff Tray and removed the magnet in the end] ... I explained *why* we were doing this and showed them we go from equation -> using a table -> coordinates -> plotting [but not how yet] and it was just magical ✨️ lots of understanding, lots of learning, lots of co-teaching and helping 😀 🩷 equations and their functions, we smashed it mate 👊🏻 ... . H E L L O || 👋🏻🫡✨️ . Thought I'd re-introduce myself as I've had a few new followers recently! I'm Katie; taught maths at secondary level in mainstream schools for the first 10 years of my career [was second in faculty] but eventually realised that I really wanted to work closely with SEND children, whether that was SENCo or SEND school... I've now been working in a SEND school as a teacher for the last 3 years and absolutely love it ❤️ it is hard work, and not without its challenges, but definitely where I belong 💖 🙌🏻 ... First 2 years I taught every topic to my class (whilst the school was developing) and I was PSHE Lead; now in this 3rd year I'm teaching maths to all of the upper school students (KS3+) and also teach social communication to my tutor group, I'm still PSHE Lead but with additional role of Maths Lead added to me this year 👩🏻‍🏫 a lot of responsibility and this was most evident with our recent Ofsted visit when I had 2 deep dives and 3 observations all within one day 😵‍💫 but I'm just about coping! ... I don't get around to posting a lot, I have a brain condition which causes a lot of headaches, migraines, brain fog, fatigue, dizziness, etc. so by the time the working day is done, so am I 😶‍🌫️😴 but I'm trying to be more present on here 📲 ...
