Tour de France Stage 21: Rambouillet -> Paris (128 kilometers, flat) The final stage of the 2019 edition of the Tour de France is upon us, and I don’t imagine that we’ll see a change in any of the jerseys, or see anymore riders abandon the race at this point. Racing into Paris is a big tradition for the Tour de France, and for some time now, it’s been a flat stage, and traditionally for the sprinters. This year isn’t any different, and it will be for the sprinters, although they won’t be racing for the green jersey, but just stage honors, as Peter Sagan has already wrapped up the green jersey category. There isn’t any competition for the KOM jersey either, although there are two categorized climbs on the day: Côte de Saint-Rèmy-Lés-Chevreuse (cat. 4): 34 kilometers in; 1.3 kilometers long, 2% average, 6% max Côte de Châteaufort (cat. 4): 38 kilometers in; 0.9 kilometers long, 1.4% average, 4.9% max There’s also a intermediate sprint on the day, but I can’t imagine that there’s going to be much contest for it, as there isn’t a winnable race for anyone in the green jersey: Paris Haut Champs-Élysées sprint: 89.5 kilometers in There’s going to be one crazy last sprint for the Tour de France on the fabled streets of Champs-Élysées, as this is the last opportunity for sprinters to impress their sponsors, and win a stage before the Tour ends. Thank you for following the Tour on my account, it was a pleasure to disperse the news.

Tour de France Stage 20 Analysis: The 20th stage was shortened substantially due to poor weather, and it proved to be very helpful for Egan Bernal and Team Ineos in the yellow jersey defense. With no intermediate sprint to be fought for on the stage, the likes of Peter Sagan and the other sprinters didn’t care much for the stage, and dropped off into the grupetto in order to save energy for tomorrow. However, the climbers were most definitely not content with just letting the stage go by itself, and they were very interested in this stage. Other riders were interested as well, and a large breakaway went away, with almost 25 riders, including Vincenzo Nibali. Back in the peloton, it almost looked like everyone was content with letting Egan Bernal pull on the yellow jersey again, and no one really attacked him. However, the team of Steven Kruijswijk, Jumbo-Visma did put on some pressure, and eventually dropped Julian Alaphilippe, in order to move Kruijswijk up into 3rd place, and onto the podium, as long as nothing changes. For the stage however, Vincenzo Nibali put on a great show of individual strength, although his Tour hasn’t been great, and ended up winning the stage. Other than the acceleration from Jumbo-Visma, no one attacked for real on the stage, and the GC contenders rolled over the line, more or less together. The white and yellow jersey competition is pretty much finished up, with Egan Bernal leading both of them with a lead of 23’29” for the white, and 1’11” for the yellow. At this point, the only thing that Bernal has to do is finish the stage with the contenders, and not abandon. Then for the other competitions, they are completely finished up, and Romain Bardet and Peter Sagan just have to finish the 21st stage.

Tour de France Stage 20: Albertville to Val Thorens (59 kilometers, mountain) The 20th stage was set to be a big one, the last one before Paris, and a big stage for anyone wanting to to get highly placed in the GC. On a stage that was meant to be 130 kilometers, with 3 categorized climbs and an intermediate sprint, it got shortened substantially. The race directors decided based off the weather and potential mudslides that the stage needed to be cropped down to avoid any difficult or dangerous sections for the riders. Now, the 20th stage looks very different, and instead of 130 kilometers, it’s cut down to 59, and only one categorized climb, with only one intermediate sprint: Val Thorens (HC): 59 kilometers in; 33.5 kilometers long, 5.5% average, 13.4% max The climb takes up most of the stage, and we can only expect to have a crazy amount of attacks, as this is the last possible opportunity for them to take the yellow jersey. At almost 35 kilometers long, I wouldn’t be surprised if the sprinters just went into the grupetto at the start of the stage. Meanwhile, the climbers will be fighting it out on possibly the last 59 kilometers that could change the outcome of the yellow jersey. The GC contenders will be fighting it out, trying to break the choke hold that Ineos has on the race at almost all times. Ineos is likely going to have most of their team to protect Bernal on the final climb, as the stage is short, and they won’t have to pull on the front for over 100 kilometers. According to Geraint Thomas, he’ll be working for Egan Bernal, in order to secure the yellow jersey. We’ll see tomorrow if he actually does that, or if he works on securing a podium spot for himself. First two slides show what the stage looked like before the race directors switched it up.

Stage 19 Analysis What a crazy stage, and just overall day. This stage was hard enough as it was, with the multiple, tough categorized climbs. However, the weather made it even more tough, but oddly enough, the riders didn’t actually experience that weather. The weather played a massive part in the shaping of the stage, and eventually actually shortening the stage as well. A massive hailstorm that dumped hail onto the road caused the stage to be shortened by almost 40 kilometers, and caused the time to be stopped at the top of the L’iseran. This was completely unprecedented, but with the conditions of the road further down the mountain, it was completely the right decision. However, what makes the decision so controversial is that it was made as the contenders were making their way down the mountain, after already climbing it. Many of the riders were visibly frustrated, none more so than Julian Alaphilippe, who was crying, not only because of his lost yellow jersey, but because the opportunity for him to save it was also taken away from him. However, the action in the stage before this was announced was also very interesting, and just added up to be a very good bike race, even though it was missing 40 kilometers. The day was as usual, with an early morning break containing the likes of Dan Martin, Vincenzo Nibali and others, and still no sprinters, it seems like they’ve given up on the chance to beat Peter Sagan. The break eventually grew in size, and the amount of riders added up to around 25. As the break hit climbs like L’iseran, they broke up, and many riders were dumped off the back from the breakaway. This was also the time when the contenders for the overall standing decided that they wanted to start upping the tempo, and ride their own race, without the leaders in the front. Attacks started coming, notably from Geraint Thomas, who looked like he was trying to help benefit Egan Bernal as he attacked a couple of times, but got caught both times. After getting caught the latter time, Thomas sat up and stayed in the group, but the pace was already permanently increased. This pace ended up being too much for Julian Alaphilippe, and he was slowly distance...

Tour de France Stage 19: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne -> Tignes (126.5 kilometers, mountain) The second to last mountain stage in this year’s Tour de France is nothing to avoid, and it certainly won’t be avoided by the GC contenders for this year. The likes of Egan Bernal will likely attack, and most likely someone like Thibaut Pinot as well, as long as they have their legs about them. It will be interesting to see who is able to attack, but also the whole Ineos situation. Will Geraint Thomas be working for Egan Bernal, and pull on the front for him? Or will Ineos continue business as usual. The categorized climbs on the day: Côte de Saint-André (cat. 3): 25 kilometers in; 3.1 kilometers long, 6.8% average, 8.7% max Montée d’aussois (cat. 2): 38 kilometers in; 6.5 kilometers long, 6.2% average, 10.5% max Col de la Madeleine (cat. 3): 63.5 kilometers in; 3.9 kilometers long, 5.6% average, 10.1% max Col de L’iseran-Souvenir Henri Desgrange (HC): 89 kilometers in; 12.9 kilometers long, 7.5% average, 14.9% max Montée de Tignes (cat. 1): 124.5 kilometers in; 7.4 kilometers long, 7% average, 11.5% max All the categorized climbs on the day are not easy in any way, and each and every one has the possibility of breaking up the race completely. The GC contenders can attack on any climb, and break the race wide open. The race also includes an intermediate sprint, that probably won’t go to any of the sprinters: Bessans sprint: 68.5 kilometers in The day can go any way, and practically any GC contender in the top 7 can make a point to gain time on Alaphilippe. Alaphilippe struggled on the final climb of the day on Stage 18, and the only thing that saved him was the fact that he can descend like a mad man, and he was able to catch up. Maybe we’ll see a new yellow jersey after the stage, but we’ll have to see.

Stage 18 Analysis - TDF This stage was exactly what everyone wanted. A crazy mountain stage, and seconds and riders flying everywhere. It started with a breakaway, as typical stages do. 33 riders, and over the course of the stage, it got whittled down. It included riders like Romain Bardet and Nairo Quintana, 23 minutes and 9 minutes down before the stage, respectively. The break gained around 8 minutes at one point, meaning that Quintana would only be around a minute behind Alaphilippe if the results stayed like that, but in the most confusing move I have ever seen, Movistar decided to chase Nairo Quintana, and possibly reducing the possible lead he could have had. But as soon as we got on the Galibier, the race got even more hectic. The breakaway is where the action started, and Nairo Quintana attacked from there, looking completely on form, and not hesitant at all, leaving everyone in the dust. Bardet realized that this was likely the winning move, and went with him, dragging Lutsenko along too. Back in the favorites group, Bernal was the first one to attack, with not as strong as an attack as Quintana had, but a strong one nonetheless, with the Colombians showing up in the Alps. Bernal powered up the mountain, but in the break, Quintana had gone over the top of the final climb, almost 90 seconds over Bardet. Bernal continued with his effort, and Thomas attacked from behind, although that didn’t last very long, as Pinot chased him down. However, this attack did put Alaphilippe in trouble, and he went backward quickly. All the favorites minus Alaphilippe and Bernal went over the top together, and started their descent, with Quintana still in the front, putting on a great descent. Alaphilippe went over the top almost 30 seconds behind the favorites group, but descended like a bat out of hell, and actually managed to catch the favorites group, managing to only lose time to Bernal. Overall, the stage did not disappoint, and we saw countless unimaginable things happen. Among them, Romain Bardet takes the polka dot jersey, although he only has a 12 point lead, and he may want to take some reassurance points.

🗣 STATEMENT FROM TEAM INEOS AND JUMBO-VISMA - “We believe this is a very harsh decision by the race commissaries and against the spirit of what has been such a fantastic race to date. It was the sort of incident that merits a fine and a warning but certainly not expulsion from the race – a ‘yellow card’ but not a ‘red’. Luke and Tony recognised it for what it was – a minor spat on the road at the end of a sweltering day in the saddle. It didn’t affect any other rider and it didn’t disadvantage any other team. They rode to the end of the stage together where they both shook hands. There was no ill will and they clearly still have a lot of respect for one another. We believe it is unjust that their Tour could come to an end over something like this at this point in the race.” ____________________ #TDF #TDF19 #TDF2019 #TourDeFrance #TourDeFrance19 #TourDeFrance2019 #TourOfFrance #TourOfFrance19 #TourOfFrance2019 #LeTour #LeTour19 #LeTour2019 #LeTourDeFrance #LeTourDeFrance19 #LeTourDeFrance2019 #Wielrennen #Ready #Cycling #News #LaBicicletaNews #Nature #Fiesten #Biking #Bikers #Cycling

Tour de France Stage 18: Embrun -> Valloire (208 kilometers, mountain) The first Alps stage is possibly also one of the toughest stages in this year’s Tour. This stage will most certainly be a massive one, and it will mean a lot for the general classification. This stage will be very tough for almost all of the GC contenders, and with the race narrowing down, and the GC contenders separated by a small amount of time, plenty of attacks will come, and the yellow jersey can very easily change hands. On the stage, there are also plenty of points for the KOM jersey, and it could also change hands very easily, with all the categorized climbs: Côte des Demoiselles Coiffées (cat. 3): 13 kilometers in; 3.9 kilometers long, 5.2% average, 9.6% max Col de Vars (cat. 1): 82.5 kilometers in; 9.3 kilometers long, 7.5% average, 12.2% max Col D’Izoard (HC): 133 kilometers in; 14.1 kilometers long, 7.3% average, 12.4% max Col du Galibier (HC): 189 kilometers in; 23 kilometers long, 5.2% average, 11.3% max While the stage doesn’t end on top of a big hill, it in fact finishes on the bottom of one. The category 3 climb finishes with only 18 kilometers done in the stage, and this may be a climb that drops most sprinters, and they’ll have a tough time staying within the time cut. The intermediate also comes as usual in the stage, as a way to make up for the fact that many sprinters will very likely get removed from the race: Les Thuiles sprint: 45 kilometers in With a stage like this, it’s only logical to think that it’s a massive stage for the GC riders. The stage may cause many gaps to form in the GC, but it may also mean that they don’t win the race, but rather members from the breakaway. The stage will be very difficult, there’s no doubting that, but it may cause splits that settle the race in stage 18.

Tour de France Stage 17 Analysis: The stage was just as everyone expected. It did turn out to be the breakaway who took the stage, and the peloton didn’t care at all in pulling them back. It was a super hot day, with the temperature hitting almost 105 degrees at the peak. Because of this, the race organizers allowed for feeding for almost the whole stage, but more importantly, the time cut would be based off of the times of the GC contenders. Everyone in the peloton knew that today would be a day for the breakaway, and it showed. To get in the break, it was a very competitive start of the stage, and very hard to get into the break. However, it developed quicker than expected, and ended up with around 35 riders in it, including the likes of Greg Van Avermaet and Kasper Asgreen. This break did stay away, but ended up breaking up as a group of 33 riders was too big to take to the line. It ended up splitting into 22 riders back, and 11 riders up further. The group of 11 slowly imploded as well, and just exploded into groups of other individuals. Matteo Trentin attacked up front, and ended up staying away for the stage win. This was Mitchelton-Scott’s 4th stage victory in the Tour de France of this year, and they’ll be pleased with that, even though Adam Yates hasn’t done anything for GC. Talking about GC, no one moved around, and the top 6 stays the same, going into the Alps stages. Peter Sagan stays in green, as was completely expected, Egan Bernal continues with white, and Tim Wellens has the polka dot jersey for maybe one of the last days. However, a more bizarre incident came after the leaders had finished, and as the peloton was rolling to the finish. Tony Martin had done his turn, and tried to swing off wide, by apparently accidentally almost ran Luke Rowe off the road. However, he looked back, saw Rowe, and did it again. We don’t know if it was purposeful, but at this point, the cameras cut away, and we thought it was solved. However, now, a couple hours after the end of the stage, the race organizers have announced that Luke Rowe and Tony Martin have been expelled from the race. The next 3 stages will be very important, and Jumbo-Visma and Team Ineos may...

Stage 17: Pont du Gard -> Gap (200 kilometers, flat) The 17th stage in the Tour de France acts as a transition stage from the rest day and flat day, to the more difficult stages to come in the Alps. It isn’t necessarily a stage for the sprinters, and they will most likely be out of the peloton in a gruppetto by the time they cross the finish line. Instead, this stage favors the hilly specialists. But, as the stage does come very late, the breakaway likely won’t be pulled back, and the winner will come from there. The race starts off relatively flat, but once the riders get 40 kilometers in, the road slopes upward, and the route is a false flat for nearly 70 kilometers, until the top of the first categorized climb: Côte de la Rochette-du-Buis (cat. 4): 104.5 kilometers in; 2.3 kilometers long, 6.2% average, 12.2% max Col de la Sentinelle (cat. 3): 191.5 kilometers in; 5.2 kilometers long, 5.4% average, 7.8% max The second and last climb on the day is a rather tough category 3 climb, who’s summit comes with 8.5 kilometers to go in the stage. The distance from the finish line means that it’s a perfect launch pad for hopefuls to win the stage, whether it’s from the break, or GC contenders looking to gain some time. The stage also features an intermediate sprint, pretty close to their start, but still in the middle of the massive false flat: Vaison-la-Romaine sprint: 62 kilometers in The stage is an odd one. If this type of stage came in the first week of the race, someone like Peter Sagan would likely take the victory. However, with the GC race so tightly contested, the GC riders won’t want bonus seconds to be available, nor will they want any attacks on the final climb, so they’ll want to let the breakaway stay out. With that being said, it’s also possible that some teams might want to pull back the break, and try to attack. Who knows, it’s the Tour de France.

Stage 16: Nîmes -> Nîmes (177 kilometers, flat) In a completely great stage for the day after a rest day, the peloton will do a very large criterium race around the Nîmes countryside. The stage is completely for the sprinters, and there’s no significant hills for them to get over, or for GC contenders to attack on. There isn’t much to say about the hills on the stage, as there is only one categorized climb, and the other hills aren’t even that big. The only categorized climb comes after the intermediate sprint: Vallérargues sprint: 65 kilometers in The usual morning breakaway will likely be out front as the cyclists pass through the sprint, and not leave mas points for the peloton. However, sprinters teams won’t want all of the points to be gone, so they won’t likely let a massive break go in front. They also will want their sprinters to have a chance to win the stage, before the peloton goes back into the mountains, with no stages really for the sprinters until the final into Paris. The only categorized climb comes later after the sprint: Côte de Saint-Jean-Du-Pin (cat. 4): 96 kilometers in; 1.8 kilometers long, 4.2% average, 6.5% max The climb isn’t very hard, nor very long, which means it won’t do too much to the race, and the points available on the stage is only 1, so Tim Wellens won’t be interested in the slightest. Overall, the race is pretty much completely set up for the sprinters, and it would be a big shock to see anyone else take it.

Stage 15 Analysis The breakaway took plenty of time to form, almost 60 kilometers, although it wasn’t for a lack of attacking. Many people attacked to try and get back time, like Romain Bardet and Nairo Quintana. Finally, a break did form, and it included Romain Bardet, Vincenzo Nibali, Nairo Quintana, Simon Yates and Dan Martin among others. Overall, the start of the stage was quite confusing to figure out who was off the front, and where the camera was. Eventually, Landa and Fuglsang got tired of the pace in the yellow jersey group, and they crossed over to the breakaway. Eventually, it got near the end of the stage, much to the pleasure of the people who have to organize the top ticker. First, Mikel Landa went past Nairo Quintana, and it became clear the Quintana is going to take another loss today. But in the front group, which was around a minute and a half in front of the pursuers, and 2 and a half minutes in front of the yellow jersey group, Simon Yates went on the attack, and Julian Alaphilippe was still a little ways back. David Gaudu set a ferocious pace for Pinot, which led somehow to an Alaphilippe attack. For some time after Alaphilippe attacked, it looked like he might even gain more time, but he was caught, and attacked again. Thomas handily took care of it, but didn’t want to move with Alaphilippe on his wheel. Simon Yates kept on powering through, not letting anyone touch him, while the race blew up behind him. Geraint Thomas eventually passed up Alaphilippe, and left him behind, although Landa, Pinot, and Bernal we’re still in between. Simon Yates made it to the line, some 30 seconds before Thomas, who made it 30 seconds in front of Alaphilippe. A ridiculous stage, and the race is all kinds of shaken up.

Stage 14 Analysis: An early breakaway contained riders like Tim Wellens, looking for the polka dot jersey points, and of course Peter Sagan, who wanted green jersey points. However, on the second climb of the day, Peter Sagan got dropped, but it looked like he anticipated that, as he was able to hang with the peloton until the intermediate sprint point, where he picked up 7 points without a contest. After that, riders started steadily dropping off the back after the start of the HC climb. From then, it was quite a war of attrition, and teammates got slowly dispatched until it was just the main GC contenders. Team Ineos looked rather exposed, as many of Bernal’s and Thomas’ teammates dropped rather quickly. For Thibaut Pinot, David Gaudu had an amazing ride, and protected his team leader, while still putting out a really good pace, and dropping some of Pinot’s rivals in the meantime. We saw Quintana dropped earlier than pretty much anyone else, which is a surprise, because we expected to see him send some fireworks off in the stage, maybe attacking, but that didn’t happen, and he lost around 3 minutes. However, near the end, all teammates were dropped from their GC contenders, and it became a full-on GC battle. Probably the biggest talking point from this stage is that at this point, Geraint Thomas himself was left behind, and he went backward quickly. With Thomas dropped, a very elite group of Egan Bernal, Steven Kruijswijk, Julian Alaphilippe, Thibaut Pinot, and Emanuel Buchmann were left. Once near the end, David Gaudu’s work paid off, and Thibaut Pinot attacked with apparent ease. He would go on to win the stage in an attack that was very pretty, around 6 seconds in front of Alaphilippe. And Alaphilippe himself is the big surprise in this stage. No one expected him to be in yellow for this stage, but we saw him very spectacular in the time trial, which allowed him to keep the yellow for another stage. Once we were in the stage, Julian Alaphilippe did great, and his climbing look very good as well. As many GC contenders were dropped off steadily, Alaphilippe looked comfortable, almost climbing with his mouth closed. Even as the reigning champion Geraint...

Stage 14: Tarbes -> Tourmalet (117.5 kilometers, mountain) On the shortest stage of the 2019 Tour de France (besides time trials obviously), the riders aren’t going to have a fun time, or a rest day in any way. Looking at the profile would make any right minded person feel sick to their stomach, and make their legs feel sore. However, for the legs of Bernal and Quintana, who both lost a good chunk of time on the time trial, it should be a great opportunity to attack. The day certainly isn’t easy, especially with 3 categorized climbs: Côte de Labatmale (cat. 4): 18 kilometers in; 1.4 kilometers long, 6.7% average, 9.2% max Col du Soulor (cat. 1): 60.5 kilometers in; 11.9 kilometers long, 7.8% average, 11.5% max Col du Tourmalet (HC): 117.5 kilometers in; 19 kilometers long, 7.4% average, 12.5% max The Labatmale doesn’t come as a major inconvenience to the riders, and it’s a little bit of a warm up run. However, the second climb, the Soulor will definitely be painful, as it stretches for almost 12 kilometers, with averages of just under 8%. This is where the peloton will be completely annihilated, and only the favorites will remain. However, some people may choose to go into the breakaway, and this stage is definitely one that the breakaway could stay away for. As appeasement for the sprinter, a intermediate sprint does also come in the stage: Pierrfitte-Nestalas sprint: 86 kilometers in It comes rather late in the stage, so if green jersey hopefuls do want to go in the breakaway to get points, they will have to survive over the category 1 climb that comes just before it. This stage should definitely have plenty of fireworks, as the GC contenders will look to upset the spectacular form the Julian Alaphilippe is on. Everyone will likely attack everything and anything that Alaphilippe has, probably trying to exhaust his team, and just leave him to fend for himself. Overall, this stage is going to be one heck of a battle, so you should tune into it and watch it, as it has the potential to be one of the most entertaining stages in this year’s tour.

Stage 13 Analysis: What a stage! It is said that when you wear the yellow jersey, you ride like two men, and Julian Alaphilippe confirmed that indeed! Not only did Julian Alaphilippe limit his losses to rivals like Thomas and Kruijswijk, he actually gained time, winning the stage 14 seconds in front of Geraint Thomas! Julian Alaphilippe looks to be on the best form of his career, and he takes his second win already at the 2019 Tour de France. If he keeps this up, he might have a shot at keeping the yellow jersey for a fairly long time. We all know he can climb well, being the 2018 King of the Mountains at the Tour de France, but it’ll just be a matter if he absolutely drained himself today. Geraint Thomas also has a very solid time trial, and lost time to only Alaphilippe, and gaining major time on all other rivals. Bernal on the other hand did not have a good stage in the slightest, losing a lot of time, and even the white jersey. This is shocking, as we know he doesn’t favor time trials, but usually he can survive through them. Also, many people (including myself) has Egan Bernal keeping the white jersey until Paris with no doubt, and this certainly proves them wrong. Horrid day for Wout Van Aert, who went off early, and looked to be setting a pretty good time, but going into one of the final corners, he hit the barriers and was down for a while. Current updates from the team say no fractures, but just a deep cut in his leg. Hoping he can recover quickly, as he’s becoming one of the brightest stars not only in cyclocross, by road now too. With Alaphilippe winning the stage, he extends his lead over everyone, and the closest person to him now is Geraint Thomas, around a minute and a half back. This is absolutely spectacular from Julian Alaphilippe, and the French might just have a hope for this year.

Stage 13: Pau -> Pau (Time Trial, 27.2 kilometers) Time trial. Not much more to say, the race is pretty much transparent. This is when the big guns will look to gain time on rivals for the very select, and for most, not lose a ton of time. Oddly enough, the favorite for this stage, Rohan Dennis, abandoned the Tour in stage 12, which has not yet been resolved, but it does leave the door open for someone else. I expect to see the likes of Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal - the Ineos heavyhitters - to absolutely tear apart the rest of their rivals. The course is relatively tough, with a couple of hills, but none of which might warrant a bike change for anyone.

Stage 12: Toulouse -> Bagnères-de-Bigorre (209.5, mountain) Stage 12 is a good introduction into the mountainous stages, while still not being too hard. Although, a 200+ kilometer stage with two category 1 climbs is still difficult, it’s not anywhere near how hard the coming mountain stages will be. The day’s start elevation is just above 150 meters above sea level, and the end is just above 550 meters, so overall, the trend doesn’t show too much climbing. However, this doesn’t mean too much, as the three climbs crested on the day are all descended before the finish line. The three categorized climbs on the day are: Côte de Montoulieu-Saint-Bernard (cat. 4): 62.5 kilometers in; 1.7 kilometers long, 5.2% average, 8.1% max Col de Peyresourde (cat. 1): 146 kilometers in; 13.2 kilometers long, 7% average, 13.5% max Hourquette d’Ancizan (cat. 1): 179 kilometers in; 9.9 kilometers, 7.5% average, 13.1% max After the first climb, the intermediate sprint comes along, with the normal amount of points available. Depending on how big the break is, their might still be points available for the group. Also a point to take into consideration is the fact that some sprinters like Peter Sagan might see this stage as an opportunity to go in the break and get extra green jersey points, as this stage doesn’t suit the sprinters in any way. Bagnères-de-Luchon sprint: 130.5 kilometers in Directly after the sprint is when the stage becomes difficult, and when we’ll be able to see who is feeling strong after the rest stage. It is a rather tough climb, lasting for a good 13 kilometers, and averaging 7%. With the top of the climb coming with 63.5 kilometers to go, it’s a bit far out for anyone to attack, and the break may not be caught by here either. For the record, and depending on who gets into the break, the peloton might just let it go and win the stage. However, for the third and last climb of the day, the top comes with 30.5 kilometers to go, and the rest is all downhill with the exception of a small little hill. This is where we can expect to see people attack, and if people are on good form, we can expect to see them chase anyone who attacks. Overall, the stage marks the first...

🗣 Ewan quote after finish - "To be honest I can't believe it. I've been close in the last four sprints I've done, and my team never lost faith in me. I never lost faith in my sprint. I knew if everything came together then I can be the fastest on the day, and I think today I showed that. . "I think with about 10ks to go I got caught behind my teammate Jasper who crashed, and I was really at the back of the bunch. Roger came back for me, and he basically took me from the back of the bunch to Groenewegen's wheel in the last few kilometres. Once I had a bit of time to recover, luckily I had the legs to be able to win. . "There's no other race I've dreamt of winning since I was a young kid. I can't believe it. The Tour de France is something so distant from Australia, something we only watched on TV. I can't believe I'm even here and to win a stage is a real dream come true for me." Stage 11 Analysis A pretty as-expected stage coming back from the 1 day break, with a 4 man breakaway getting away from the gun. A rider that we expected to be in the breakaway, Lilian Calmejane, did happen to get into it, as it was his hometown that the race started in today. Not much action was happening in the peloton today, with a pretty much stereotypical flat stage. The break got a lead of 2 and a half minutes rather steadily, and then lost it rather steadily as well, as the sprinters teams were very keen to get their sprinters a stage victory. However, with 31 kilometers to go, there was a rather large crash in the peloton, which caught up Sunweb, EF and Direct Energie riders. Nairo Quintana and Richie Porte were both caught up behind it, and had to ride hard with their teammates to get back to the peloton. They rejoined the peloton around 5 kilometers later, but Niki Terpstra was too banged up to continue, and withdrew with around 21 kilometers to go. De Gendt (no not Thomas) attacked as the break was disintegrating as a last hope before the peloton caught up. Then with 9 kilometers to go, Caleb Ewan’s main leadout man ended up in a ditch at the side of the road, although he landed very softly. De Gendt attacked fiercely, and once had a gap up to 40 seconds, but the peloton reacted in time, and caught him with 4 kilometers to go, allowing for the sprint trains to fully crank up the pace for their fast men. Jumbo-Visma pulled hard for the whole race hoping for Groenewegen, and there was no exception in the final kilometers, with Wout Van Aert giving Groenewegen a perfect leadout. However, the Aussie Caleb Ewan came through like a missile, and just managed to pip Groenewegen at the line. Viviani and Sagan came through third and fourth respectively, with Sagan yet again picking up more points. It’s a shame to see how hard Jumbo-Visma worked for Groenewegen, all for a second place, but Ewan looked on spectacular form today, and finished it off to get his first Tour De France victory. During all of his TV interviews, many riders from the peloton - not just his team - kept coming over and giving Ewan handshakes, he must be a very popular rider in the peloton.

Stage 11: Albi -> Toulouse (167 kilometers, flat) And we’re back! While a rest day is great for the cyclists in the Tour De France, it is certainly one of the least liked things by fans. The rest day was enjoyed by the cyclists, with many of them going on coffee rides, and plenty of them getting massages to try and make their legs not sore. Stage 11 is a good stage to toss them right back into the race, with a very flat profile, and not too many kilometers on the day. The only two categorized climbs come within the first half of the race, and both before the intermediate sprint. These climbs will be an easy chance for the riders to see if they’re going to carry good form into this part of the race: Côte de Tornac (cat. 3): 32 kilometers in; 3.6 kilometers long, 5.9% average, 7.4% max Côte de Castelnau-de-Montmiral (cat. 4): 77 kilometers in; 2.5 kilometers long, 3.8% average, 5.1% max Neither of these climbs are particularly difficult, and they shouldn’t cause a problems for anyone specific, unless they happen to be sick. However, for both of the climbs, the descent comes a little bit after the top, and a plateau waits for them at the top. After the climb, the stage gets pretty boring actually, for the 10 kilometers until the intermediate sprint: Gaillac sprint: 87 kilometers in Depending on the size of the breakaway, we can anticipate a big race for these points, as Peter Sagan would love to take an even bigger stranglehold on the competition for the green jersey. He currently leads by 62 points over Michael Matthews, and 76 points over Elia Viviani, the next closest person. Matthews can match Sagan by surviving over hills, but doesn’t have the raw speed when it comes to flat out bunch sprints. Viviani is the opposite, and can’t get any points on the hillier stages. Unless we see something drastic happen, we can probably expect to see Peter Sagan keep the green jersey until Paris. However, if Elia Viviani rides like he usually does on Stage 11, he will most likely close the gap down a little by winning the stage.
