There’s a handful of locations in the last 30 something thousand kilometres of cycling around the world that have made me really tear up when I’ve reached them. Seeing the Alps, riding into Istanbul, turning a corner to see the Himalayas looming on the horizon, cycling across the border into Singapore, standing small under Mt Fuji and many more. Arriving at the start of Eyre Highway, the gateway to the Nullarbor, is another one of those moments. Most are the milestones of the original plan I drew up back in London; arriving at them brings out of me the disbelief and subsequent pride that I actually went and did it. That I am doing it. I turned my little legs enough times to pedal a bicycle from London all the way to these far flung places. That I was there, in that real moment, within the dream I envisioned two years ago when I decided I’d make it work somehow to go and ride my bike. I started the Eyre Highway at the beginning of the week. I’ve met some amazing folks, rode in some very straight lines, said thank you to countless truckies and drivers who gave more than enough space and felt deep fear the few times when, if I was one foot to the right, would look very different. I’ve sworn at the wind more than a few times, used the same words when marvelling at the sunsets. Despite the good and bad days, I feel some inner peace riding this road. A completion.
