Avoid Tea, Coffee Before And After Meals, Advises Top Medical Body ICMR The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has advised moderation in tea and coffee consumption, the two beloved beverages deeply woven into Indian culture. The medical body recently introduced 17 new dietary guidelines in partnership with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), aiming to encourage healthier eating habits across India. These guidelines stress the significance of a varied diet and active lifestyle. While recognising their cultural importance, the medical experts also warned against excessive intake of tea and coffee due to potential health concerns. ICMR researchers explained that tea and coffee β€œcontain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and induces physiological dependence". The guidelines also shed light on the caffeine content of popular beverages, noting that a 150ml cup of brewed coffee contains 80 - 120 mg of caffeine, instant coffee has 50 - 65mg, and tea contains 30 - 65mg. The ICMR advises a daily intake of just 300mg of caffeine. The medical body also advised avoiding tea or coffee for at least an hour before and after meals because they contain tannins, which can reduce iron absorption in the body. Tannins tie to iron in the stomach, making it harder for the body to absorb iron properly. This may lead to iron deficiency and health problems like anaemia. Excessive coffee consumption can also cause high blood pressure and cardiac irregularities, it said. Drinking tea without milk, though, has various benefits such as improved blood circulation and a reduced risk of conditions like coronary artery disease and stomach cancer, the guidelines said. They also recommended a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and seafood, while limiting oil, sugar, and salt intake. . . . DHFL's Dheeraj Wadhawan Arrested By CBI In β‚Ή 34,000-Crore Bank Fraud Case The CBI has arrested former DHFL Director Dheeraj Wadhawan in connection with the alleged defrauding of a 17-member lender bank consortium to the tune of β‚Ή 34,000 crore, officials said Tuesday. Mr Wadhawan, arrested from Mumbai on Monday night, was produced before a special court here which remanded him in judicial custody on Tuesday, they said. The former director of DHFL and his brother, Kapil, were earlier arrested in the case on July 19, 2022, they said. The agency had filed a chargesheet against 75 entities including Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan on October 15, 2022. They were granted "statutory" bail from the special court on December 3, 2022, on the grounds that the investigation was incomplete and the charge sheet filed was piecemeal. This order was upheld by the Delhi High Court as well. The CBI had challenged the order in the Supreme Court, which set aside the bail orders noting that the Special Court as well as the High Court "committed serious error of law" in disregarding the legal position enunciated and settled by the top court. In the meanwhile, Dheeraj Wadhawan got interim bail in a separate matter on medical grounds from the Bombay High Court as he was admitted at the Lilavati Hospital for treatment. The Bombay High Court had regularised the bail in that case on May 2 this year and had also extended his protection from CBI arrest for one week. The CBI arrested Mr Wadhawan after the protection period was over, they said. At present, three accused are in judicial custody - Dheeraj Wadhawan, his brother Kapil Wadhawan, and Ajay Nawandar. The CBI had booked the Wadhawans and others on a complaint from the Union Bank of India, the leader of the 17-member lender consortium that had extended credit facilities to DHFL to the tune of β‚Ή 42,871 crore between 2010 and 2018. . . . BJP Candidate Kangana Ranaut Files Nomination From Mandi For Lok Sabha Elections Kangana Ranaut, the BJP candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat, on Tuesday filed her nominations for the Lok Sabha seat. Accompanied by her mother and sister, the Bollywood actor-turned-politician credited the people of Mandi for her electoral debut. Kangana said that it was the love of the people of Mandi that had brought her back to her home state, and hoped to make a mark for herself in politics just like she had done in film. "The people of Mandi and their love for me have brought me here. Women in our country are making a mark in every field but incidents of feticide in Mandi were high a few years ago. Today, the women from Mandi are in the Army, the field of education and politics," said Kangana. When asked about Congress, she said "The anti-national mentality of the Congress party is a matter of concern for the country..." Kangana's mother Asha Ranaut who accompanied her said, "The public have come here to support Kangana. We will definitely win. She has done a lot of work for the people and will do so in the future too..." Her sister Rangoli Ranaut who was also present while Kangana filed her nomination said, "I extend my best wishes on this new journey of her. You can witness how the people support her in the crowd..." After filing her nomination, Kangana said, "Today I have filed nomination from Mandi LS seat. It is a matter of pride for me to have the opportunity to contest from Mandi... I have been successful in Bollywood and I am hopeful that I will get success in the field of politics as well." The decision to field Kangana from Mandi, which has traditionally been a stronghold of the ruling Congress in the state, adds a layer of intrigue to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In her maiden bid for membership of the Lower House, she faces a formidable challenge in the form of Congress heavyweight and the son of late former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, Vikramaditya Singh. . . . Chakhesang Students’ Union Extend Non-Cooperation With Indian Armed Forces Operating Under AFSPA The Chakhesang Students’ Union, CSU, has directed all its affiliated and subordinate units to extend non-cooperation and abstain from any association with the Indian Armed Forces operating under the purview of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, AFSPA. The directive was issued on May 13 by the CSU in view of the recent extension of AFSPA from April 1, in parts of Nagaland by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The CSU stated that this unjust extension only exacerbates the fear and unrest already prevalent in the state, and undermines the very fabric of the society. The union while condemning the MHA action, directed all the affiliated and subordinates not to have any association with the Indian Armed Forces and urged to stand united in its refusal to comply with any directives issued under this draconian law. The CSU also called upon the Government of the day to heed the voices of the people and repeal AFSPA without delay. . . . NASA Announces Plans To Build First Railway System On Moon As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) readies to return astronauts to the moon, it has announced its plans to build a levitating robot train on the lunar surface. In a blog post, the American space agency provided details about the project called "Flexible Levitation on a Track (FLOAT)", which aims to provide a "robotic transport system" to support future lunar activities of astroinauts visiting the moon. The transport system will be critical to the daily operation of a sustainable lunar base in the 2030s, NASA said in a statement. "We want to build the first lunar railway system, which will provide reliable, autonomous, and efficient payload transport on the Moon," robotics expert Ethan Schaler of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. "A durable, long-life robotic transport system will be critical to the daily operations of a sustainable lunar base in the 2030s," he added. According to NASA's initial design, FLOAT will be for machines only. It will consist of magnetic robots levitating over a three-layer film track to reduce abrasion from dust on the lunar surface. Carts will be mounted on these robots and will move at roughly 1.61 kilometres per hour. They could transport roughly 100 tons of material a day to and from NASA's future lunar base. The main purpose of FLOAT would be to provide transportation services in areas of the moon where astronauts are active, the space agency said. This will include carrying loads of lunar soil and other materials to different areas of the lunar surface. The other main use of the railway would be to transport larger loads of materials and equipment to and from the areas where spacecraft land. "FLOAT will operate autonomously in the dusty, inhospitable lunar environment with minimal site preparation, and its network of tracks can be rolled-up / reconfigured over time to match evolving lunar base mission requirements," NASA said in its post. . . . NCP Supriya Sule Alleges Cameras In Baramati EVM Room Turned Off, Poll Panel Responds The CCTV cameras at the strongroom where Electronic Voting machines were stored for the Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency, was switched off for 45 minutes, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has alleged. Demanding an explanation from the Election Commission, senior party leader Supriya Sule called it 'suspicious", in a throwback to the multiple objections of the Opposition regarding Electronic Voting Machines. The Returning Officer for the constituency, Kavita Dwivedi, has said only the "display was temporarily closed". No reason was cited for this temporary closure. "CCTV system in warehouse where EVMs are kept in Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency fully operational. All data secure, only display temporarily closed- Explanation by Election Returning Officer Kavita Dwivedi,' read a post on X, formerly Twitter, by the District Information Office, Pune. The "explanation" came after a strong post from Ms Sule, the sitting MP who is defending the seat. "It is suspicious that the CCTV is switched off where a very important thing like EVM is kept. Also, this is a big laxity," read a rough translation of a Hindi post by Ms Sule. "When the election representatives contacted the concerned authorities and administration, no satisfactory answers were received. Apart from this, technician is also not available at the said place. Also our representatives are not allowed to inspect the EVM status. This is very serious," the post further read. "The Election Commission should immediately take notice of this and announce the reasons why the CCTV was closed. Apart from this, appropriate action should be taken against those responsible for the incident," her post added. . . . Amid Tensions, Iran's Big Nuclear Bomb Warning To Israel An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reignited concerns over the country's nuclear ambitions, particularly in light of escalating tensions with Israel. Kamal Kharrazi, the adviser, hinted at a shift in Iran's nuclear doctrine if its existence is perceived to be under threat by Israel. "We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb, but should Iran's existence be threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine," Kharrazi said. Tensions between Iran and Israel reached a tipping point when the former launched a barrage of explosive drones and missiles directly targeting Israeli territory, in response to the bombing of Iran's embassy in Syria's capital Damascus earlier in April. Despite Ayatollah Khamenei's previous fatwa against nuclear weapons development, Iran's then-intelligence minister hinted in 2021 that external pressures, particularly from Western nations, could prompt a reassessment of Iran's nuclear posture. "In the case of an attack on our nuclear facilities by the Zionist regime (Israel), our deterrence will change," Kharrazi added. Amidst this backdrop, efforts to engage with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have yielded mixed results. While discussions between Iran's nuclear officials and IAEA representatives have been described as positive and productive, tangible progress remains elusive. Rafael Grossi, the head of the IAEA, expressed frustration over Iran's alleged lack of cooperation, highlighting the urgency for concrete measures to address outstanding concerns regarding Iran's nuclear activities. Last year, Iran made commitments to assist in investigating uranium particles found at undeclared sites and reinstall monitoring equipment. However, the IAEA reports indicate that these assurances have not resulted in significant advancements. . . . "Is He PM Candidate?": Smriti Irani On Rahul Gandhi Debating PM Modi Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the latter accepted an invitation to debate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on crucial election issues. Ms Irani questioned Mr Gandhi's ability to engage in a debate with someone of Prime Minister Modi's stature, given his reluctance to contest in his historical stronghold, Amethi. The Amethi constituency had been synonymous with the Gandhi family's political legacy, represented by Mr Gandhi since 2004 until his defeat in 2019. The Congress leader last week filed his nomination papers from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, a constituency held by his mother Sonia Gandhi for the last two decades. Responding to Mr Gandhi's challenge for a debate, Ms Irani, the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi, said, "Firstly, the person who does not have the courage to contest against a normal BJP worker in his so-called castle, should refrain from boasting. Secondly, who wants to sit at level with PM Modi and have a debate, I want to ask him if is he a PM candidate of the INDI alliance?" Mr Gandhi welcomed the proposal for a public debate, expressing eagerness for either himself or Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge to participate. Mr Gandhi's acceptance of the debate invitation came in response to Justice (Retd) Madan B Lokur, Justice (Retd) Ajit P Shah, and journalist N Ram, who had extended the invitation in a non-partisan effort to foster informed decision-making among citizens. Mr Gandhi revealed that both him and Mr Kharge have agreed that such a debate would help people understand "our respective vision and enable them to make an informed choice". . . . "Empowerment Of Women Is My Commitment": PM Modi The empowerment of women is his commitment and women need to be provided opportunities to go beyond the traditional roles they are associated with, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of a roadshow in Patna along with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Asked if he is confident of women voters supporting the BJP, the Prime Minister replied, "The empowerment of women is my commitment. I have taken a lead in the G20 Summit - women-led development. For this, we must provide opportunities to women. They have to go beyond the traditional roles we associate them with. For example, we launched the 'Drone Didi' initiative in villages." "We opened the doors of the Army (for women), made them Air Force pilots. We sent them to the borders, now our daughters are defending the country in Siachen. I have succeeded in bringing about a psychological change. Women power will boost the country's development journey and speed it up," the Prime Minister added. The Prime Minister said the country has resolved to take the NDA beyond the 400-seats mark in this election. "The atmosphere of Bihar is the same as the rest of the country," he said. On a question on the BJP's prospects in east India, the Prime Minister recounted a 2013 speech. "I was not even the PM candidate then. I had said that if we want to develop India, we must make East India the growth engine. In the last 10 years, I have consistently put emphasis on projects in east India related to infrastructure, education and health. As far as the election is concerned, there is a storm. In east India, we will get better results than before. I believe people will be surprised," he said. . . . "I have to go back to jail after 20 days. If you choose jhadu (AAP's symbol), I won't have to go back to jail," the Chief Minister said. Mr Kejriwal's return to teh heat and dust of campaigning after 50 days in jail has reinvigorated AAP, which had been firefighting on multiple fronts. James Anderson Announces Retirement From Cricket This Year England pace legend James Anderson has announced that he will retire from cricket this year. Having become the first fast bowler ever to take 700 wickets in Test cricket during England's tour of India earlier this year, legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne's tally of 708 wickets in the format could be on Anderson's target as he takes the field for one final run with the England team. The first Test of the summer at Lord's will be Anderson's final game, which will be against West Indies. England are set to play Tests against West Indies and Sri Lanka at home this year. "Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord's will be my last Test. It's been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I've loved since I was a kid. I'm going to miss walking out for England so much. But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to, because there is no greater feeling," he wrote in the Instagram post. "I couldn't have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world. "I'm excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, it's always meant a lot, even if my face often doesn't show it. See you at the Test, Go well Jimmy x" According to 'The Guardian', Anderson was told by England's Test team coach Brendon McCullum that they are looking at the future, with an eye on the Ashes 2025-26 in Australia, which means that end of the road is near for the 41-year-old. . . . Rahul Gandhi Accepts Invitation For Public Debate With PM Modi Amid Lok Sabha Polls A day after he said he was 100% ready to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a public debate on the Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has formally replied to a letter by two former judges and a senior journalist inviting him and the PM to be part of such an event. Stating that he or Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge would be pleased to participate in the debate, the Wayanad MP has asked the potential organisers to let him know if the PM agrees to do so as well. Former Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur, former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and N Ram, senior journalist and former editor of 'The Hindu', had written to PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, proposing a public debate between them. The letter said that the Lok Sabha election has reached its halfway mark and while both sides have raised important questions about each other's manifestos and key issues, there had been no "meaningful responses". "To this end, we believe that citizens would hugely benefit by hearing directly from our political leaders through a public debate on a non-partisan and non-commercial platform. It would be ideal if the public heard not just the questions of each side, but also the responses. We are of the view that this would help to strengthen our democratic process immensely," the letter said. Responding to Mr Ram and the two former judges, Mr Gandhi said on Saturday that he looks forward to participating in a "productive and historic debate" and that the country "expects the Prime Minister to take part in this dialogue". . . . Angry Israel Envoy Shreds UN Charter After Palestine Membership Vote In a strong display of outrage, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan shredded the UN charter at the United Nations General Assembly just before it passed a resolution supporting full membership of Palestine. The UNGA on Friday voted overwhelmingly for a resolution asking the Security Council to make Palestine, which has UN observer status, a full member. The resolution was passed by a resounding majority of 143 votes in favour including by India while 25 countries abstained, and nine nations, including the United States and Israel, voted against it. The Israeli envoy Erdan called the resolution a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and said that it subverted the US veto in the Security Council last month. Erdan said he is "holding up the mirror" for General Assembly members while shredding the UN Charter. "This day will go down in infamy. I want the entire world to remember this moment, this immoral act...today I want to hold up a mirror for you, so you can see what exactly you are inflicting upon the UN Charter with this destructive vote. You are shredding the UN Charter with your own hands," he said. He also alleged that the resolution opens up the UN for "modern day Nazis" referring to Hamas. "Today, you are also about to grant privileges and write to the future terror state of Hamas. You have opened up the United Nations for modern day Nazis, to the Hitler of our times...So here it is. I present to you the future outcome of today's vote...the soon-to-be President, Yahya Sinwar, President tyrant of the State of Hamas, sponsored by the UN, and he owes his deepest gratitude to you, the General Assembly," the Israeli envoy added while holding up an image of Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza. "At the end of my speech, I tore the 'UN Charter' to pieces, to illustrate what the assembly is doing in its support for the entry of Palestinian terrorism into the UN," Erdan later posted on X. . . . Army To Get Drishti-10 Drones To Boost Surveillance On Pak Border: Report In a significant boost to its surveillance capabilities along the Pakistan border, the Indian Army is set to receive the first Hermes-900 Starliner drone on June 18. The Hermes-900 known as the Drishti-10 drone is being supplied to Indian forces including Indian Army and Navy by Adani Defence Systems. "The first of the two drones to be acquired by the Indian Army would be handed over to the force on June 18 in Hyderabad. The supplies are part of the deal signed under the emergency powers given to forces by the Defence Ministry," defence officials told ANI. The Indian Army will deploy the drones at its Bhatinda base from where it can keep an eye on the entire western border with Pakistan, they said. The first Hermes-900 was delivered to the Indian Navy in January this year. The second drone is being taken by the Army. Moreover, the third one would now be supplied to the Navy and the fourth one would go to the Army, they said. The Indian Army has placed orders for two of these drones from the firm under emergency provisions that mandate that the systems supplied by vendors should be more than 60 per cent indigenous and should be under the 'Make in India' in Defence. The Indian Army is already operating the Heron Mark 1 and Mark 2 drones and has also placed orders for the Drishti-10 or the Hermes-900 drones under the last tranche of the emergency procurements approved by the government for the forces. Adani Defence had signed a deal with the Israeli firm Elbit for the transfer of technology for the drones and stated that it has indigenized 70 per cent of the birds and will work to increase it further. The Indian Army has also inducted more satellite communication-enabled birds from Israel, as it has a few Heron Mark 2 birds in direct deals with Israeli Aircraft Industries. . . . "Could Have Arrested Earlier Or Later": Supreme Court On Arvind Kejriwal Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted bail by the Supreme Court today, allowing him to resume his campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The court asked the leader to surrender on June 2 for questioning in an alleged money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy. While granting him bail, Supreme Court Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta emphasized that Mr Kejriwal is the leader of a national party and does not pose any threat to the society. "Arvind Kejriwal is the Chief Minister of Delhi and a leader of one of the national parties. No doubt, serious accusations have been made, but he has not been convicted. He does not have any criminal antecedents. He is not a threat to the society," the court said. "Granting Kejriwal interim bail for 21 days will not make much of a difference. 21 days here or there should not make a difference," the bench added. Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent figure in the opposition alliance challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP, was detained in March amid a long-standing corruption probe. His arrest was met with accusations of political conspiracy, with several leaders within his party questioning the timing of the arrest. The Supreme Court also observed that the investigation has been going on for the last 1.5 years, but Mr Kejriwal was arrested in March, days before voting for the Lok Sabha polls began. "The ED's Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was registered in August 2022 while the chief minister was arrested on March 21 this year. He (Kejriwal) was out there for one-and-a-half years. He could have been arrested earlier or after but nothing such thing happened." The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested by ED in March in a corruption case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy. . . . Arvind Kejriwal Walks Out Of Jail After 50 Days, Says "Need To Fight Dictatorship" Arvind Kejriwal was released from Delhi's Tihar Jail Friday evening - 50 days after he was jailed on corruption charges linked to the alleged liquor policy scam and hours after the Supreme Court granted bail till June 1. The Aam Aadmi Party's leader's release means he can now campaign for the AAP, and the INDIA bloc, in the ongoing election, in which Delhi's seven seats will vote on May 25. As he walked out of Tihar Jail's Gate No 4, Mr Kejriwal was welcomed by a mob of flag-waving and slogan-shouting AAP workers, as well as his wife Sunita Kejriwal and senior leaders like Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, who have emerged as the party's public faces while the Chief Minister was in jail. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was also present. In his first public comments after leaving jail, Mr Kejriwal thanked "all the judges of the top court" and, with one eye on the election in Delhi on may 25, called on voters to "'save the country for dictatorship". "I want to thank all of you... you gave me your blessings. I want to thank the judges of the Supreme Court, it is because of them that I am in front of you. We have to save the country from dictatorship..." Mr Kejriwal also attributed his release to Lord Hanuman, and said he planned to visit the Hanuman temple in Delhi's Connaught Place on Saturday morning. He will be on bail till June 1 - the final phase of voting for the seven-stage election. He is to surrender by June 2. The court turned down pleas to extend his bail but said it would hear arguments for extended relief next week. The court had been hearing arguments by Mr Kejriwal challenging his arrest, when it set the cat among the pigeons by noting it would also hear arguments for bail for the AAP leader. . . . "Destruction Of Human Experience": Apple's New iPad Ad Sparks Backlash Tech giant Apple is famous for its products and its stylish and effective marketing strategies and events. However, to promote its new iPad, the company released an ad which is drawing criticism from several internet users and celebrities. The ad showcases an industrial press crushing several creative objects to birth a new ultra-thin iPad. The "Crush!" advertisement features a variety of items being crushed inside the new iPad Pro, including a record player, a piano, a guitar, an antique TV set, cameras, a typewriter, books, paint cans and tubes, and a vintage arcade gaming machine. The song "All I Ever Need Is You" by Sonny and Cher has been used as the ad's soundtrack. The idea behind the ad is to tell users that their new device allows them to watch TV shows and movies, play games, read books, snap photographs, record videos, and much more in a sleek, thinner-than-ever form factor. Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote while sharing the ad, "Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we've ever created, the most advanced display we've ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it'll be used to create." However, the advertisement has been regarded as a graphic representation of the tech industry's devastation of the cultural sectors. Many people on social media called it "destructive" and said that it is "crushing symbols of human creativity and cultural achievements to appeal to pro creators." Actor Hugh Grant wrote, "The destruction of the human experience. Courtesy of Silicon Valley." Filmmaker and actor Justine Bateman added, "Truly, what is wrong with you?" Another person wrote, "It is a heartbreaking, uncomfortable, and egotistic advertisement. When I see this result, I'm ashamed to buy Apple products since nineteen years." . . . SC Grants Interim Bail To Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Till June 1 The Supreme Court on Friday afternoon gave Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal interim bail till June 1, the final phase of voting for the seven-stage 2024 Lok Sabha election. The Aam Aadmi Party boss - arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in the alleged Delhi liquor excise policy scam, and now in the city's Tihar Jail - must surrender to prison officials by June 2. The court also said pleas to extend relief beyond that date would be heard next week; Mr Kejriwal's legal team had sought bail till July, i.e., till after the election and the formation of the new government. In granting interim bail for Mr Kejriwal, the Supreme Court had shot down arguments about the term of release, noting, "Let us not draw parallels with other cases. 21 days will not make any difference". "For one-and-a-half years he was there... he could have been arrested before or after (the election) also. Whatever it is, 21 days here or there should not make any difference," the court said. The two-judge bench - Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta - said bail conditions would be similar to those imposed on Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Mr Kejriwal's colleague who was arrested in October in connection with the same case and given bail in early April. Crucially, Sanjay Singh was allowed to participate in political activities, meaning he could campaign for the AAP. And that is what Mr Kejriwal is also expected to be able to do, once he is released. Mr Kejriwal's team had made a strong pitch for his release to allow him to campaign for his AAP in the days before the election for Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats - all held by the BJP - on May 25. Sources said the AAP boss could walk out of Tihar as early as this evening. . . . Reservation In Focus After PM Panel's Findings On Minorities, Says Minister Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar today said the ramifications of a new population study, which, among other things, found the Muslim community growing exponentially, have to be examined from various angles to determine its fallouts. The most crucial aspects would be the question of reservation in education and jobs. "When one minority community grows, there is a question of how it affects other minority communities, in terms of opportunities," the minister said. "Is there a risk that the other minority communities, like Parsis and Jains and Buddhists and Sikhs and Christians are crowded out from the benefits and the schemes designed for minorities? From education, from jobs to opportunities?" the minister said in an exclusive interview. Then there would be the question of other communities, like Other Backward Classes, which have been denied the same benefits for decades, especially when seen in the context of the Congress "talking about going against the constitution and giving that same community more reservations," he said. The data from the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister showed the Hindu population has decreased by 7.82 per cent between 1950 and 2015 in India. The population of Muslims has increased by 43.15 per cent in the same period, suggesting there is a conducive environment in the country to foster diversity. The paper, coming in the middle of election, has set off controversy, with many calling it "scare-mongering". Asked about that, Mr Chandrasekhar made it clear that time is irrelevant when it comes to facts. "I particularly don't feel that when there is some truth that is put out there, data and facts that are put out there, whether it is during election, before election or after election facts remain the facts, the truth remains the truth. And there is no way of people trying to wriggle out of an uncomfortable truth and to find a more convenient truth," he said. . . Top Medical Body's Advisory Urges People To Avoid Protein Supplements The Indian Council of Medical Research has pressed for avoiding protein supplements for building body mass and has recommended restricting salt intake, minimising sugar and ultra-processed foods and reading information on food labels to make informed and healthy food choices. The Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) under the top health research body on Wednesday released revised 'Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs)' to meet the requirements of essential nutrients and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The DGIs have been drafted by a multi-disciplinary committee of experts led by Dr Hemalatha R, Director, ICMR-NIN and have undergone several scientific reviews. Seventeen guidelines have been listed in it. In the DGIs, the NIN stated that prolonged intake of large amounts of protein powders or consumption of high protein concentrate has been associated with potential dangers such as bone mineral loss and kidney damage. It also stated that sugar should be less than 5 per cent of total energy intake and a balanced diet should provide not more than 45 per cent calories from cereals, and millets and up to 15 per cent of calories from pulses, beans and meat. The rest of the calories should come from nuts, vegetables, fruits and milk. Total fat intake should be less than or equal to 30 per cent energy, the guidelines said. Due to the limited availability and high cost of pulses and meat, a significant proportion of the Indian population relies heavily on cereals, resulting in poor intake of essential macronutrients (essential amino acids and essential fatty acids) and micronutrients, it stated. . . . "Even BJP MLAs Can Switch Sides": Dushyant Chautala On Prospect Of Split Dushyant Chautala -- the prime mover behind the bid to pull down the Haryana government led by his former ally -- the BJP, appears to have taken reports about his MLAs' secret meeting with the BJP, with textbook equanimity. Switching parties is normal at election time, he told NDTV this evening. Asked about the possibility of an Operation Lotus by the BJP, which is in a tight corner after three Independent MLAs pulled support to the government, he said, "Then the people of Haryana will come to know". Then, with a straight face, he added, "Who knows, even the BJP MLAs can switch sides". Sources have said that four of the nine MLAs from Mr Chautala's JJP (Jannayak Janta Party) met the former BJP Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar this afternoon. AT the meeting, held in the Panipat house of state minister Mahipal Dhanda, the current political crisis was discussed. The BJP had ended the alliance with Mr Chautala, a Deputy Chief Minister in the Manohar Lal Khattar government, in March, as it effected a change of guard in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha election. Nayab Singh Saini was brought in to replace Mr Khattar, and Mr Chautala, after a failed Lok Sabha seat sharing deal, was shown the door. Earlier this week, after the Independents pulled off support to the government, Mr Chautala responded. He promptly declared that the government is now in minority and asked the Governor for a floor test. Appearing at a press conference with leaders of the Opposition Congress, he also said he was ready to provide the Grand Old Party with outside support should they wish to form a new government. Asked about the JJP MLAs' meeting with Mr Khattar, Mr Chautala said this is was "not the time to worry about who is meeting whom". The fact remains that the government is in minority, he added. . . . "Super-Earth": Astronomers Detect Rocky Planet With Atmosphere Astronomers have searched for years for rocky planets beyond our solar system with an atmosphere - a trait considered essential for any possibility of harboring life. Well, they finally seem to have located one. But this hellish planet - apparently with a surface of molten rock - offers no hope for habitability. Researchers said on Wednesday the planet is a "super-Earth" - a rocky world significantly larger than our planet but smaller than Neptune - and it orbits perilously close to a star dimmer and slightly less massive than our sun, rapidly completing an orbit every 18 hours or so. Infrared observations using two instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope indicated the presence of a substantial - if inhospitable - atmosphere, perhaps continuously replenished by gases released from a vast ocean of magma. "The atmosphere is likely rich in carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, but can also have other gases such as water vapor and sulfur dioxide. The current observations cannot pinpoint the exact atmospheric composition," said planetary scientist Renyu Hu of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature. The Webb data also did not make clear the thickness of the atmosphere. Hu said it could be as thick as Earth's or even thicker than that of Venus, whose toxic atmosphere is the densest in our solar system. The planet, called 55 Cancri e or Janssen, is about 8.8 times more massive than Earth, with a diameter about twice that of our planet. It orbits its star at one-25th the distance between our solar system's innermost planet Mercury and the sun. As a result, its surface temperature is about 3,140 degrees Fahrenheit (1,725 degrees Celsius/2,000 degrees Kelvin). . . . "No Fundamental Right To Campaign": Probe Agency Opposes Bail For Arvind Kejriwal With the Supreme Court set to decide on interim bail for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday to allow him to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the Enforcement Directorate has filed an affidavit opposing his petition and said that laws are equal for all and that campaigning is not a fundamental, constitutional or even a legal right. The probe agency, which arrested the AAP chief in the liquor policy case on March 21, has also pointed out that no political leader has ever been granted bail for campaigning and said that letting Mr Kejriwal out of jail to canvas for his party candidates would set a wrong precedent. Hearing the petition on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had said Mr Kejriwal is the elected chief minister of Delhi and is not a habitual offender. "There are elections... these are extraordinary circumstances and he is not a habitual offender," the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta had said. In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) pointed out that, while hearing the bail plea of former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia - a co-accused in the case - the court had said that the laws apply equally to all citizens and institutions, including the State. Stating that Mr Kejriwal had sought interim bail primarily for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections, the agency submitted, "It is relevant to note that the right to campaign is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right." The agency has argued that 123 elections have taken place in the past five years and if interim bail is granted for campaigning, then no politician can be kept in judicial custody since polls take place around the year. . . . Prince William Not Letting Harry Anywhere Near Kate Middleton: Report Estranged British royal Prince Harry has been "hit hard" by the cancer diagnosis of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, a royal author said. The Princess of Wales, often known by her maiden name Kate Middleton, announced in March that she has an undisclosed form of the disease. "They (Harry and Kate) were once extremely close, and Harry was hit hard by the news of her cancer diagnosis, which he learned about just the way the rest of us did, via Kate's shocking video," Christopher Andersen, author of "The King," told Fox News on Wednesday. He also claimed that the 39-year-old prince would love to "reconnect" with Kate but "unfortunately, it doesn't appear [Prince] William is willing to let his brother anywhere near his ailing wife." Andersen said that there was just "too much drama" between the brothers and their wives and that there was "lingering bitterness" on everyone's part. "So, the chances of even a meeting between Harry and the rest of the royal family, much less some sort of reconciliation, seem extremely slim," he added. . . . Controversy After Video Seems To Show BJP Leader's Minor Son Casting Vote Controversy has erupted after a video emerged online today showing a minor boy seeming to cast a vote during the Lok Sabha election in Berasia in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal. According to reports, the boy is the son of Vinay Mehar, a Bharatiya Janata Party panchayat leader, and he accompanied his father - who seemed to take the video - into the polling booth during voting on Tuesday, and cast the vote, on his father's behalf, on the EVM. The 14-second video - reportedly shared on the BJP leader's Facebook page - was flagged by the media advisor of Congress leader Kamal Nath. The video shows the boy and the father in the booth and pressing a button on the EVM linked to the lotus, or the BJP's symbol. The camera then pans to show the vote being registered by the VVPAT, or Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail machine, after which Mr Mehar is heard saying, "Ok. That is enough now." Questions have asked about how a) a mobile phone was allowed into the polling booth, and b) how the child was permitted to accompany his father into the booth. "BJP has turned the Election Commission into a child's plaything. In Bhopal, the BJP's district panchayat member Vinay Mehar got his minor son to cast his vote. Vinay Mehar also made a video of the time when he cast his vote. Vinay Mehar posted the video on Facebook." "Will there be any action?" Piyush Babele, whose X handle describes him as a media advisor in the office of former Chief Minister Kamal Nath, said as he shared the video online. The Election Commission has not yet responded to the video. The video has been acknowledged by district officials. District Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh has ordered an investigation. Presiding Officer Sandeep Saini has been suspended and a FIR has been filed against the BJP leader. . . . Russia Says US Trying To Destabilise India During Lok Sabha Polls: Report The US aims to destabilise India during the 2024 general election, the Russian foreign ministry has said after a US federal commission's report criticised New Delhi for alleged violations of religious freedom. RT news, a Russian government-owned news network, has reported that foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said Washington lacks understanding of India's national mentality and history and continues to make "unfounded accusations" about religious freedoms in India. Zakharova called it disrespectful to India as a country and a State. "The reason [behind the US accusations] is to unbalance the internal political situation in India and complicate the general elections," RT news quoted her as saying. The foreign ministry spokesperson added that Washington's actions clearly constitute interference in India's internal affairs. This comes after the latest annual report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) criticised India for alleged violations of religious freedom. The commission also renewed its recommendation to the US Department of State to declare India a "Country of Particular Concern". The report has accused the ruling BJP of reinforcing "discriminatory" nationalist policies. It has also flagged the continued enforcement of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, Citizenship (Amendment) Act and anti-conversion and cow-slaughter laws. The enforcement of these laws, it has said, has resulted in arbitrary detention, monitoring and targeting of religious minorities and those advocating on their behalf. "Both news media and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) reporting on religious minorities were subjected to strict monitoring under FCRA regulations," the report has said. . . . Priyanka Campaigns For Rahul In Rae Bareli, Slams PM For Adani-Ambani Jibe Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday held street meetings in villages of Bachhrawan Assembly constituency, the third day of her stay in the district to campaign for her brother Rahul Gandhi, who is contesting from Raebareli. Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his Adani-Ambani jibe, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday charged that the BJP has a nexus with industrialists and waived their loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore. She also alleged that the entire BJP machinery is engaged in spreading "lies" about Rahul Gandhi. Referring to the prime minister's remarks at a rally in Telangana that the Congress should explain to people why it has stopped raising the 'Ambani-Adani' issue as its 'Shehzada' used to do for the past five years, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Today he (Modi) is saying Rahul does not take the name of Adani, Ambani....He does so every day. He brings their truth in front of you every day". (PTI) . . . 'How Much Black Money Has Rahul Gandhi Got From Ambani-Adani': PM Modi Attacks Rahul In a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioned today why the Congress leader had gone silent on his "Ambani-Adani" offensive since the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections. "For five years, Congress's shehzade kept chanting one thing. After his Rafael issue got grounded, he started a new chant. Five industrialists, five industrialists, five industrialists. Gradually, he started saying Ambani-Adani. But ever since the elections were announced, he stopped abusing Ambani and Adani. Today, I want to ask from Telangana soil, he must declare how much money they have taken from Ambani, Adani? Was there a deal? Why did you stop abusing Ambani and Adani overnight? Zaroor daal mein kucchh kaala hai (something is wrong). You abused them for five years and then it stopped overnight?" the Prime Minister said at a rally in Telangana. The Prime Minister's counterstrike is significant because Mr Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Narendra Modi government of favouring top industrialists. The Congress leader has also said that while the BJP government has made 22 Indians "arabpati (billionaires)", the Congress aims to make crores of people "lakhpati" if it comes to power in these elections. The location of the Prime Minister's retort is also significant. Telangana, a Congress-ruled state, recently signed several MoUs with the Adani Group totalling an investment of β‚Ή 12,400 crore across various sectors. The BJP has flagged Mr Gandhi's repeated verbal attacks on wealth creators and top industrialists. In fact, former Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh, who recently switched to the BJP, has said the party leadership forced him to speak against billionaire Gautam Adani. . . . Air India Express To Curtail Flights Over Next Few Days Amid Crew Crisis With no resolution in sight for the "mass leave" crisis being faced by the airline, Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh has written to employees and said that the number of flights being operated will be reduced over the next few days. Since Tuesday night, the airline has had to cancel over 90 flights after 300 senior cabin crew members reported sick at the last minute and then switched off their cellphones. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded. The Air India Express Employees Union also wrote to the management and "highlighted a stark departure from commitments". In a statement released on Wednesday night, an Air India spokesperson said a new flight schedules has been drawn up keeping passengers in mind. "Keeping guest convenience in mind, we have mobilised all our resources and revised our flight schedule. We are also accommodating affected guests on alternative flights, including those of Group airlines, to ensure they reach their destinations at the earliest. We request guests booked to fly with us to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport," the spokesperson said. "Guests may visit the "Flight Status" section on our website for real-time information. If their flight is cancelled, or delayed beyond 3 hours, they may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees on Tia on WhatsApp (+91 6360012345) or on airindiaexpress.com." In his letter, Mr Singh said over 100 cabin crew members had reported sick, severely disrupting operations, and that the impact was "disproportionate" because the action was taken by senior employees. . . . Mayawati Sacks Nephew Akash Anand As Heir "Till He Becomes Mature" Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati's nephew Akash Anand is no longer her political heir or the party's National Coordinator. The 29-year-old got dropped this evening, days after a police case was filed against him for a derogatory comment against the BJP. His aunt said he was being "separated" from his responsibilities "until he attains full maturity". In a post in Hindi on X, formerly Twitter, this evening, Ms Mayawati said, "BSP is also a movement for self-respect and self-esteem of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and social change for which Shri Kanshi Ram ji and I have dedicated our entire lives and a new generation is also being prepared to give it momentum." "In the same sequence, along with promoting other people in the party, I declared Shri Akash Anand as the National Coordinator and successor, but in the larger interest of the party and the movement, he is being separated from both these important responsibilities until he attains full maturity," read her second post. His father, Anand Kumar, will continue to fulfil his responsibilities in the party, she added in a third post. Mr Anand's comments about the BJP had made headlines last week. A case was filed against him for Model Code violation. "This government is a bulldozer government and a government of traitors," he had said. "The party that leaves its youth hungry and enslaves its elderly is a terrorist government," the BSP leader had added, citing Taliban. The district administration took note of the speech and a case of Model Code of Conduct violation was filed against Mr Anand and four others on Sunday. Ms Mayawati had named her nephew as her political heir in December last year. Her announcement today came as the third phase of the election came to an end. Suzuki expressed happiness to witness the inauguration of the Kohima Peace Memorial. He said that the monument enables everyone to stand in solemn silence and offer sincere prayers to all the victims of the battle. Suzuki expressed his gratitude to the people of Nagaland for their magnanimous generosity extended to the Japanese. This generosity has fostered a new friendship between Japan and Nagaland, Ambassador Suzuki added. He said, today, next to the Kohima Peace Memorial, an Eco-Park is being developed as part of the Nagaland Forest Management Project with Japanese Government's Official Development Assistance from the Japanese Government. Suzuki viewed that many people in Nagaland will visit the Eco-Park to have a relaxing stroll with their families and friends, and enjoy the nature. He exuded hope that the Eco-Park will be loved by all and will become a new landmark in Kohima, symbolizing the friendship between Japan and Nagaland. . . .
