When I began offering prenatal yoga in 2018, I always intended for it to be a platform for community. Pregnancy is the ideal time to build a village, one that you can turn to in the early weeks of roller-coasting with a baby. My own mothers group (organised by local govt community health centre) wasn’t offered until I was 12 weeks postpartum. By then, I was desperate to be in a group of women and craved community and conversation. After three months of swimming (mostly) alone, I had pushed the vulnerability exposed at birth into my shadow corpse and swallowed (gulp) the mounting self-doubt. I internalised many of the struggles experienced in the early days. Through that critical window, I developed a self-reliance that was emotionally isolating and disconnected me from what I now understand is by nature’s design intended to be a ‘shared group experience’. Still, a handful of those friendships - forged through awkwardly facilitated community health meetings - have become some of the most significant in my twelve years of parenting. Through mother’s group, I discovered a group of women that shared the struggle of getting out and into nature, people to sip caffeine and dissect the overnight sleep developments to see if we could notice a pattern, which may contain the seed of hope that maybe more sleep was possible! Fast forward a decade, when mamas attend my prenatal yoga classes, they are also opening a door to future village… I have created a corresponding postnatal group for every birthing season (Autumn, Winter, etc). Intended as a starting point for connection and catch ups outside of yoga, groups are established with the hope of like-minded women forming friendships in pregnancy that can carry them through matrescence and be a soft landing space in the early days. My heart is full receiving photos like this of YogiMamas with their babies (now nearly toddlers!) regularly gathering to share the realities of motherhood, the soaring highs and crashing lows.
