Father/son adventure day! I couldn’t be happier for my son, Bennett, that he’s getting to have his first experience taking a machine of his own to a Motorsport event. Today Bennett and I will be taking his 1960 Wahlborg Bearcat to the Adams Motorsports Park in Riverside, California to attend the VKCA “Play Day” for 2-stroke rear engined vintage go-karts. We acquired this wonderful little kart about three years ago to be Bennett’s first motorized project. It was a one-owner kart that was used when new and then hung on a garage wall in 1961. . . and it looks it! It is 100% original and we’ve learned from the vintage kart community that it is a fairly rare piece. Today we will be displaying it in order to learn more about it through conversations with expert kart restorers in the hope that we will do everything right during the process of making it a running ( and racing! ) kart again, while preserving as much of its originality as possible. Of course, seeing and hearing groups of old karts on a dedicated road race course will be the big fun of the day for both me and for Bennett . . . but, as a dad who grew up doing exactly these sorts of things with his father, I particularly look forward to seeing Bennett stand with his machine and proudly field questions while asking those of his own to experts in the hobby. So this happened I think about 6 laps into round 3 of @adamsmotorsportspark Race to the T4 nations cup. Ever seen two great riders riding completely differently but going the same speed?This is me. That's as far as I ever lean the bike, and the reason you never see my cornering pics as part of our marketing. Corner speed, leaning, and late braking aren't my thing. I'm good at being smooth, quick transitions, great lines, bp, and getting on the gas really early and hard, AND having color coordinated kit. I have a few options: 1) I can work on my weak areas. 2) Focus and take advantage of the stronger areas of my riding. 3) Do both 1 and 2. All options are great. I choose 2 because I ride safer and have more fun when I do everything pretty well, but focus on what I do best. I simply suggest getting intentional with your riding. What say you???
