When it’s rainy, we train inside! Gigi and I worked an extended place command today. She’s a wild child, so working this is helping her to calm down a bit. One method that helps with hyper dogs is to backtie. Here, Gigi is back tied to my front door (I get creative sometimes). If she steps off the place cot for whatever reason, she’ll be automatically corrected by the attached leash. Then I’ll put her back into place and continue. My husky loves to run, and so do I, so I help him exhaust some energy by taking him on evening runs! 2 miles and he’s dead for the evening. Not your typical husky, but it gives us both an accomplished feeling. How do you work your dog? Fetch? Swimming? Chew toys? Tug? Teaching tricks? I talk a lot about obedience on this page because that’s what I specialize in. However, dogs are dogs and they have needs too. If my husky didn’t feel accomplished and didn’t have a way to expend his energy, he would probably start doing things he shouldn’t, like chewing my belongings or getting into the trash. It’s important for your dog to feel some sort of purpose, and have meaningful daily activities/interactions with you. Did I use obedience on our run this evening? You bet I did! Floki heeled the entire run, around every turn and through every neighborhood. When we slowed down to a walk at the end, he slowed with me until I freed him to let him sniff around for a little bit. Obedience is there to supplement your life with your dog and make things like running without tripping over your dog or recalling across a field after a game of fetch just a little bit sweeter and smoother. Ace is a breed that will be consistently groomed throughout his life, and he needs to be okay with it. We’ve worked on touching drills and being able to brush him, so now we are adding one more thing to the mix - the Dremel. We’re starting slow, because as soon as he heard it turn on he got scared. Since he’s very motivated by praise, I paired that with turning the Dremel on and off. The more that we do this, the more positive the sound will become to him, and then we can move forward with nail trimming. He got to the point today where he would interact with the Dremel on his own, and also lay down and relax while it whirred away. So, we’re making good progress! Ace and I are continuing to build his obedience and work on touching/brushing drills. The only way to get your dog used to something is to do it, a lot! We had a little vocalist performance, some tennis matches, a school PE class, and a crowded baseball game to work through 😁 If you look closely, we’re working on off-leash heeling. Yes, there is still a leash attached for safety, but it’s a long line leash so it’s dragging behind us. Ace needs to work on his manners at the groomer, so I’ve been touching his paws and brushing him to work on the things I know they’ll do at the groomer. We then took a trip over there to talk to his groomer in person! I wanted to know exactly what behaviors he displayed with them, and when they occurred. Ace has been learning to walk on a leash! Ace and I need to get to a good understanding before he’s allowed to be a free dog and do what he’d like, so we’re beginning everything on-leash right now. That means working on his ability to walk on a leash, potty on a leash, and give in to pressure from the leash. We are also using the leash to correct his jumping. What we’re starting to do with all of this is teach him where the boundaries are for what’s acceptable and what’s not, and help him learn what we want from him. He is doing pretty well walking on a leash now for the most part! Every dog is different, so while I post these three together during their training, know that they are each motivated by different things. Let me explain. Church, the golden/pyredoodle, lovessss his kibble and will work for it like it’s the best thing. He’s eager to please and do what you want. Cleo, the shepherd/retriever, is a nervy girl and can be motivated by treats AS LONG AS you play with her first. If you skip play, which makes her comfortable, then treats don’t matter. You haven’t solved the equation yet without play. Harley LOVES praise and attention. While she’s happy to work for treats, praise is her biggest motivator. She’ll let you love on her all day and never get tired of it. We use the reward that each dog individually appreciates. That’s the best way to engage with your dog, whether that’s in training or just day to day. Many many years ago, I started teaching my lab a recall based on her prey/play drive. If I ran, she would chase me. I wasn’t a dog trainer then, but I knew how to figure out what worked for the dog in front of me. That’s what I’m still doing today! What motivates your dog? Domino’s owner plans on taking him for lots of runs, and she needs to be able to heel him around for this so that he doesn’t trip her or pull her towards things that excite him. So, we’ve been practicing running in the heel position! Ruby took a trip out to the local playground and then joined me for a quick stop in TJ Max to continue practicing her commands in new locations and around different distractions. The playground was decently busy which allowed us the great opportunity to work around kid distractions. For Guardian breeds, we build and normalise stranger dogs as well as people if needed, on a much different basis than the average pet dog. This involves progressive acclimatization to normalise the 'threat' of an unknown canid. It’s important for anxious dogs to be able to relax. Leo and I have been working on that, and today we went to the park to continue it. We sat down under a shade tree after we heeled around a bit, and we practiced some calming techniques. My goal was to simulate a family outing to the park. He didn’t react at all, but he did watch what was going on around him. I gave him enough time to settle, and then rewarded him for doing so. These sessions aren’t hours-long because it’s also important to remember that working through reactivity is stressful. Dogs, and people for that matter, can only handle stress for so long before hitting a breaking point. We stayed at the park for around 30 minutes, and after that I gave him Leo a well deserved break. If you have a reactive dog, working in short increments is always better!
