I often hear that positive reinforcement didn’t work, and to ‘train the dog in front of you 🤷🏻♀️’. However, if +R didn’t work, it’s not an excuse to fall back on outdated and often abusive methods. There are several reasons +R may not have worked and finding a FF trainer who can help unravel the case can be extremely helpful. To me, training the dog in front of me means to get to know the dog and handler on a deeper level and to not just offer training exercises, but to understand the dog’s underlying emotions, learning difficulties, bonds, history and personality. From there, we can begin moving in the right direction to solving behaviour concerns with more than just training exercises. PRE-TEENS! I forgot to put my ‘live’ setting on for photos so enjoy these little portraits of the cute pups who completed their ‘Safety Week’ class on the weekend! Despite the name this is actually one of the most fun weeks with lots of treats, toys and play! In addition to recapping on recall games and leash skills, we worked on the ‘Chin Rest’ for help with handling in husbandry and vet visits, teaching ‘Drop It’ using the ‘Live Toy / Dead Toy’ game then ‘Leave It’ with toys and treats as well - it has to be a highly rewarding behaviour! On the way out we also practiced ‘Wait’ at the gate which proved to be a bit tricky as many of them wanted to stay for more fun times 😂 I can’t wait to see them again this weekend for their graduation! #proactivecaninetraining

☀️What did you do this weekend? I recently started taking my dogs to a new walk location once or twice a week, in an attempt to get our old man Jasper more interested in walking again. He'd been showing some signs of cognitive decline, and was less and less interested in walking more than a mile or so. I resisted this idea for a while, because it involves loading the dogs into the car (and the two senior dogs have trouble loading up), and it takes a lot more time than our usual walk. But it's been so worth it. On his last "new place" adventure, Jasper (and friends) walked more than 3 miles and had a great time! When people hear the words “reactive dog”, many people who work with dogs (other than dog trainers) get a sense of uneasiness. When I meet a dog and their guardian for the first time and they tell me that they’ve had dog walkers refuse to provide service to them, I sadly am not surprised. This girl is Asta and yep, she’s reactive to (sometimes) other dogs and specifically, cats. But I love walking her. I love the progress that she has made (with so much credit going to her guardian who put in the work with her). And no prong, choke or shock collars were necessary in that to happen. I’m excited to be starting my path to be able to be able to help guardians of reactive dogs know that yes, I can help you and your dog.

✨ JAGAIMO ✨ This little 9 week old Shiba Inu pup is called Jagaimo, which translated in Japanese is ‘little potato’ 🥔 Jagaimo’s guardians got in touch as this was going to be their first puppy and they wanted to get it right from the beginning 👏🏼 They actually had a session with me before his arrival and we went through all sorts of things, like night time routine, toilet training, what his first week would look like etc. We even went through everything they already bought for him to see if there was anything they were missing 👍🏼 His guardians said they were so glad they had that session because they felt much more prepared. So often when we see the popular 'trainers' on social media, they are talking about how to 'fix problems' with your dog, about how to 'fix' their bad behaviour and usually promising quick results. When a caregiver is struggling with an aspect of life with their dog the idea of fixing that problem can seem tempting. When we look at what they are actually doing, a lot of it involves tools and punishment. And yes, it seems to work very quickly (although often a lot of what is going on is hidden) as the behaviour stops. The difficulty starts to come when we look at the dog with an educated eye. We will see signs of stress like lip licking, yawning, the white of the eyes showing. The dogs are often leaning away from the trainer trying to create some space. This tells us that the dog is stressed, uncomfortable and wants to get away. The other issue is tools and punishment don't teach the dog what to do, only stops the unwanted behaviour. This is behaviour suppression and, while it appears to work for a while, it can lead to a whole new set of problems. The cause has not been addressed, any issues triggering that behaviour are still there. That means the behaviour is likely to come back, or there will be a degree of 'fallout' where things can get much worse because they are still struggling. A good ethical trainer or behaviourist will take the time to find out what’s causing the behaviour and consider the best way forward. This might involve referring the dog to their vet for a health check. Maybe simply setting things up so we can show the dog a more appropriate form of behaviour for that situation. It might involve a careful programme of behaviour modification to help the dog feel better about something. It could be managing the situation so that the dog doesn’t feel the need to show the problematic behaviour. And many other options, none of which are attempting ‘fixing’ the dog, and none involving discomfort, pain, or fear. For the sake of your dog and the relationship you have (and want to have) with them, if a potential trainer of behaviourist promises they will fix your dog, walk away. It's not worth the risk to your dog and the bond you share with them.

After finally receiving thyroid surgery and also moving past some major health scares with Rota, I hope to finally be on my way towards a more active dog life again. I really like using the pate type dog treats and the other day I finally got myself one of the silicone treat bags which makes it easy to bring without the pate making the fabric ones all gooey. I'm very happy with it and absolutely recommend it for all the lesser dry treats used in training. Another social day! Really great group walk with @edinburgh_holistic_dogs_ and other reactive pups. Helps humans with the confidence and allows me to practice social skills. Had one or two slightly lungey moments but when we think back on a few years ago this would have been unimaginable! So grateful to have such amazing support on this journey! After two hours, thirty test items, and many, many interruptions to meet her adoring public, Ripley has earned her CGC, CGCU, and CGCA! She absolutely killed it! I am beyond proud of how she did. Around half of the test items were things we had either never practiced, or only practiced once or twice, but she cruised through them all with her natural, care-free, go-with-the-flow temperament. She is simply the best girl around❤️ Thank you as always, to our best friend and (obviously) favorite evaluator @adventures_in_dog_training! You always make it such a fun and relaxed atmosphere, even when I’m shaking with nerves like an under-socialized Chihuahua. It's been a bit quiet from here now, as I was at the vet this week for dental surgery with Uniikki. It has been going well and we are slowly recovering. After the operation, we have some handling projects. ● Partly wearing a cone so he doesn't scratch the stitches. ● Dare to move around with the cone on, and that it goes well even if you bump into things (in the beginning he froze & became still when he went against something with the cone, which I completely understand, I find bumping into things super uncomfortable with my own head). 👉 So we've worked a bit on "if he bumps into my arm with the cone in different directions, a fingertip with soft cheese appears in front of him". ● On top of that came the side project of showing Joy that it IS Uni in the cone, which Joy doesn't really want to believe, so he barks at Uni when he wearing the cone. That thing is strange. 🧐 ● Then a gel to be applied to the gums 2 times/day, (which probably tastes disgusting), and that isn't something Uni wants to participate in... Uni shows stop signals when I present the tube with gel (I've managed to apply gel twice), but now he says thanks but no thanks. I want to avoid forcing him as we are supposed to do this twice/day for 14 days (and forcing would probably make it even harder to do). 👉 So I'm working on my training mindset here, following the encouragement from @clickervet.se who I booked in as an extra resource at the surgery day. 👉 My strategy has been to initially work with different nose targets, that he puts his nose/chin/nose bridge against my hands in different directions, and also keeps the chin and nose bridge in a frozen position against my hand. 👉 A further step has been to present the tube with gel and pair this with soft cheese and also be able to put the tube in the corner of his mouth. This is definitely a work in project, for sure. To be continued... ✨ BAILEY ✨ Bailey is a 10 week old Cockapoo and her guardians got in contact as they wanted to get her off to a good start 🥳 Having previously owned a dog, there were certain behaviours they wanted to prevent Bailey from developing 👏🏼 At this young age I really focus on engagement and confidence building, as these are the foundations for all other areas of training 👍🏼 Bailey was happy to lay at our feet as we chatted through things and really took in what was going on around her.
