Baseball summer camp registration is now open! Get ready for some summer fun! Alexandria Little League is pleased to announce 4 weeks of baseball camp this summer! Baseball camps are offered to players age 8-11 and 12-14. Camps are led by area coaches and players from ACHS, Madison HS, Bishop Ireton, and UpNext Baseball -- details on our website. Camps take place each week Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm, with Friday saved as a rain date. Camps are $300 per player per week. Thank you to everyone for your generous donations to Alexandria Little League. Together, we raised $10,825! A very special thank you to Holy Cow for partnering with ALL to donate 10% of sales yesterday to our campaign. The league showed up, bonded over burgers and milkshakes, yielding a donation of $600. Thank you, Holy Cow! The funds we raised allow the league to say YES to players who want to play and need a scholarship. It will go toward clinics for coaches, parents, and players. It will allow the league to keep working to improve our fields, with a focus on getting another field with lights, and to upgrade the equipment we use in every season. Your generous donations allow the league to hold community and school outreach events aimed at growing the love of the game in every corner in the city. Coach Amy Mathis is our spotlight today! She’s been involved in ALL for 3 ½ years - check out her love of the game and her team, below! In ALL two of my greatest memories are watching one my players catching a fly ball and all the parents cheering like crazy. The second was our team completing a double play from second base to first base. Both of memories brought me so much joy and happiness for each of my players, the whole team and their parents! I love coaching for the love of the game! When I was younger, I had this crazy thought I would one day own my own baseball team! Fast forward and I have a little league team! It’s not exactly the same, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I also love Coaching the baseball team because it allows me to spend more time with my twin boys! All women athletes have been an inspiration for me as I’ve aged. When I was younger, I remember watching Mary Lou Retton, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michelle Kwan, Danica Patrick, Simone Biles, Steffi Graf and Mia Hamm to name a few…. All of these women have been such amazing role models for young women of all ages. Read more about this girl with game: One of my favorite softball memories is when I finally had swung, and hit! I got on base and eventually made a run. Its not only my favorite memory because I had actually hit, but because I had made my coaches so proud, I saw their face as I got to first, and thats truly why this is one of my favorite memories. I love softball because it’s given me so much. It’s given me long time friends, some of the best memories, experiences I never would’ve had without it, and its honestly just so much fun! One of my favorite female athletes is first Simone Biles. I know it’s stereotypical, but I think she truly shows how much hard work and dedication can take you. And she’s also just an amazing gymnast. And second I would say my softball coach right now, Laura Hay. Meet coach Laynee Buckels who has coached since April of 2021 and played softball growing up for 12 years. Learn more about the awesome Laynee, below! One of my favorite memories of coaching is watching girls fall in love with a sport that was very pivotal in my life. Growing up, my favorite memory of playing was being coached by my dad and making friendships that are still in my life today. Coaching has been such a fun experience filled with awesome players. Watching girls grow and develop skills over the last three years has been really rewarding, and there is never a dull moment. Softball is a sport that can teach you many life lessons, create friendships, and make you stronger. Growing up, my favorite softball player was Jennie Finch, and I admired her ability to play the game well. My favorite coach is Patty Gasso. Let’s hear from Evelyn: My favorite baseball moment was when my travel baseball team (DC Girls Baseball) won the DMV championship. I love playing baseball because it is my escape from reality and it makes me happy, and it is fun. What I would say to someone who wants to try and play baseball but doesn’t know if they should or not, is that you will come across many challenges in your baseball career - just have a positive attitude and keep your head up, everyone gets hit and everyone strikes out, you can’t undo mistakes, but you can keep moving forward. Today we’re highlighting coach Jade Stone who coached “The Roos” last year! Coaching runs in her family - see her responses below to learn more about this amazing woman: Even though I have played for 37 years, my favorite memory is as a coach when the Roos won our first game of the season. The kids were jumping on each other and doing flips in the outfield because they were so excited! I love coaching baseball because the sport is so much fun and I love teaching the nuances of the game. It's a joy to watch the kids work hard, have fun, build confidence, and improve over the course of the season. My mom, Eileen Stone, is my role model. She coached me and she was always the only female coach. She has an infinite knowledge of the game and started the recreational softball league in my hometown. Jackie Mitchell was my favorite athlete. She was the first female professional baseball player and she struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
