We reached another waypoint on our Concord Panamericana shakedown cruise, the Hershey AACA Museum. A cool museum, featuring American muscle cars this month (and we saw Jenny’s bus from Forest Gump). The 1967 AMX III was unveiled at the Chicago auto show in February of 1967. It strangely was a wagon version of the yet-to-be-introduced Javelin sports car which would be shown to the public in September of that same year. Although this wagon never made it to fruition, parts and ideas of it made their way onto other models as the years went by. The tailgate was absolutely an engineering marvel. It lifted up and then slid along the roofline so that you had full access to the the cargo area. That function would never make it onto an AMC vehicle, but it had the magazines buzzing! I always wondered how this relationship came to be. Apparently, the State of Alabama was having budget issues in 1971 and could no longer continue to afford to buy their fleet orders from Ford like they had done in the 1960s. American Motors Corporation was having financial problems of their own and needed every sale they could find to stay above water. The orders called for base model Javelins with the 401/330hp engine and automatic transmissions with highway-friendly 2.87:1 rear gears. They also came with air-conditioning, power front disc brakes and heavy duty suspension. There were 71 Javelins ordered in 1971. Of those 71, 10 were painted an assortment of Midnight Blue, Limelight Green, Baja Bronze, Burnish Brown or Meadow Green. The other 61 were painted Quick Silver Metallic. The fleet deal dropped the price of each Javelin from about $3,900 to $3,047.34. The Javelins were fast too! Dairyland Fabrication coil over kit, Wilwood disc brakes, Borgeson steering gear, and replacing every bushing and bolt I can. Getting closer to motor install, and then things start getting real fun.

AMX Stocker Dr. Pepper (1985) Another Matchbox from my youth. Purchased in 1985, it is still in good condition. This stock car version of the AMX Javelin features a gloss black chassis and side exhaust pipes, Dr Pepper is a brand of carbonated soft drink created in the 1880s by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas and first served around 1885 (one year before the Coca-Cola). Dr Pepper was first marketed domestically in the United States in 1904 and is now also sold in Europe, Asia, North and South America. In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Dr Pepper is sold as an imported good. Variants include Diet Dr Pepper and, beginning in the 2000s, a line of additional flavors. The name "Dr. Pepper" was first used commercially in 1885. It was introduced nationally as a medication in the United States at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 as a new type of soft drink, made with 23 different flavors. Its introduction in 1885 preceded the introduction of Coca-Cola by a year. The formula was invented by Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton at Morrison's Old Corner Pharmacy in Waco, Texas. To try out his new drink, Alderton first offered it to the store's owner, Wade Morrison, who found it enjoyable. Customers at Morrison's soda fountain soon learned of Alderton's new drink and began ordering it. a "Waco." Alderton gave the formula to Morrison, who called it Dr. Pepper. Blue bucket seat interior coordinates with the exterior, with the only deviation being white accent stripes. Ok, so first the story behind the story. So about 20-24 years ago, I had a 68 AMX, 390 4speed,silver with black stripes. I bought it from a man named Chuck, who had it since it was new, he bought it out of Cinderella City in Lakewood CO. I guess it was on display there. So i ended up restoring the car to perfect condition. Then I ended up selling the car for 13,000. I regret selling it every day, not because who I bought it from. But because it was an awesome car. So, forward to now. Now that I have all the means to do full restorations, and after coming across this 68 390 car, I said to myself, I want to save this old girl. So I bought it,and yes it’s rough, but it’s all there. So on my own time I will start the process of bringing her back to life. It will never be for sale… #amx #amxperformance #amcamx #amcjavelin
