Every wedding has an element that stands out - a quality that gets mentioned again and again when friends, family, and in this case, a priest, talk about the couple. With Kelsey and Mike it was laughter. I relish the idea that when their loved ones think of them, they think of shared laughter. Laughter heals the soul, especially when it is between two people who have woven their lives together in a way so intricate and unique that separating them would be unthinkable. My guess is that the greatest marriages occur between people who are best friends, and who wake up each morning with a smile...and laughter. Weddings are always days filled with contrasts. There are the big expected moments - the first kiss and the first dance, for example - and there are the small intimate gestures that often go overlooked; a smile, a quick kiss, a grasp of hands. There is laughter and tears, both joyful and bittersweet. Is there anything more moving than the stoic father with tears streaming down his face? In itself a contrast of hard and soft. In a couple of weeks, wedding season kicks in for me in earnest. I'll be shooting 10 weddings between May 11th and June 22nd, and could not be more excited to be there for each and every one! Two weeks and two days ago, on a very, very rainy day in Brooklyn, this amazing couple got married. Anna and Carlos, as was reiterated by so many friends and family members, are funny and thoughtful and the kind of people you really want to hang out with on a rainy day. We walked five blocks in the pouring rain from the Arlo Hotel to Rule of Thirds, where the wedding took place, and it was an absolute joy. How much do I love couples who embrace "inclement" weather? (Very much!) They made personalized friendship bracelets for each and every guest and all of the vendors. Their adorable flower girls , instead of strewing petals down the aisle, carried unicorn shaped bubble guns that lit up and filled the air with bubbles as they walked along. Carlos & Anna's wedding was beautiful and filled with laughter, love, and the type of deep rooted connection between the couple and their families and friends that is something developed over many years and goes far beyond just the wedding day. 30 years ago today, we walked into City Hall in Manhattan (back when the Marriage Bureau was in the actual City Hall building) and were married by a guy who looked just like Norm from "Cheers". @wingypebbles was our witness and photographer (Hi Anna!). My dress was from the Gap and those flowers were probably from a corner deli/bodega. Afterward, we went and had lunch at Jerrys on Prince St, which was our favorite restaurant and which later became a Michael Kors store. This was the wedding I wanted. I'd seen too many friends be stressed out on their wedding day, worried about seating charts and the 'run of show', and I wanted to enjoy getting married. How fitting that all these years later I shoot weddings, documentary style! I always tell couples to have the wedding they want, and not the wedding someone else might want for them. In our case, we got married in February, went on our honeymoon in June and had a wedding party at my Aunt and Uncle's house in Indiana in July. Perfection. You'll have to indulge me for at least one more Iceland post. I honestly can't believe more New Yorkers don't travel there on a regular basis. It's a short and easy flight (basically the same as flying to LA) that lands you in a place that at times doesn't seem real in its scale and changeability. The first two shots were made at the top of the Hallgrimskirkja tower, 48 hours apart, looking out over Reykjavik. The third is in Thingvellir National Park near the edge of the North American tectonic plate. Shot 4 is the Gulfoss, and to give you a sense of the scale, near the upper left corner you can see people looking out over the falls. Frame 5 is one of my favorites - Maya is walking away from the Solheimajökull glacier in winds and blowing snow that made it seem as though we were miles from shelter. (In reality our guide and the bus we were in was parked just over that hill). 6 and 7 were both made at the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. As our guide pointed out, all beaches in Iceland are black sand because they are all volcanic, but this one is famous both for its beauty and the fact that it can quickly turn deadly. There is no gentle slope of gradually deepening water. Rather, a few feet in and the land simply drops away, making the waves much stronger when they hit the beach. We were advised not to play "can the wave catch me"? Or to even get close to the water and/or turn our back to the ocean. If a rope wave happens to come in and you're standing too close, you can easily be swept away. Shot 8 is at the Skogafoss (hello Game of Thrones fans - you may recognize this place as the backdrop to Jon Stark and Daenerys first kiss, although they added some completely unnecessary CGI elements to it...) And number 9. Number 9 is in downtown Reykjavik on our first full day there, during a raging storm that caused wind gusts up to 100km/hour and pelted us with snow and ice all day. If you look closely you can see the almost sideways motion of the snow. And despite this, there was a guy on a ladder WASHING WINDOWS. How he kept from being blown off that thing I have no idea. #icelandtravel #picsoftheday # #amilsteinphoto
Iceland is a study in contrasts. A place where the light can go from blue to yellow to pink, and the wind can gust or be still and the snow can fall in a gentle cascade or howling blizzard - all within the space of a few minutes, or over the course of a day. These shots were taken on the Golden Circle and the Southern Coast, some through the windows as we traveled and others while out in the midst of nature's rugged beauty. I recommend Iceland in winter. There's always a unique vibe to every couple, every wedding. With Erica and Joey it was a sense of deep, settled contentment and love for each other and between their families. Everything was done together, from getting ready at their apartment to the walk to the greatest wedding venue of them all, Central Park. Then a group bus ride after the ceremony - why is taking public transportation after a wedding so much fun? - and a reception dinner during which I think the laughter and joy levels never dipped below 100% (or maybe 110%). Couples often ask me what I recommend they do to make their wedding the best it can be, and my answer is always "be yourselves and do things exactly the way you want and are most comfortable with." The best part about NYC is always the people you meet on any given day. On this day, back in mid-October, I was fortunate enough to meet these two while out shooting with my Rolleiflex. Actually, I was just about to load a new roll of film, and they approached me, or I might not have seen them, focused as I was on my camera. They were also mid-shoot, so we chatted for a bit about what they were up to... As it turns out, the gentleman on the left is none other than Robbie Quinn (@robbiequinnnyc ), street photographer extraordinaire, whose book "Street Unicorns" is a must for anyone who loves fabulously dressed people, photography, and/or the combination of the two. This is my neighbor, Al, who recently turned 96. He saw me walking back to our building and said "Hey Amy, get any good pictures today?" Then he did a little dance in place while I shot a couple of frames. "Now I have!" I answered. The beauty of living in a building like ours is that it's basically its own small town, and we've lived here so long we know probably 3/4 of all the residents. This is our nephew, who has recently been called into active service in defense of Israel, and his adorable son (who was my best friend for a few hours this summer when we had a Shabbat meal together 💕.) The photo was taken during a short leave to see his family. They, and so many families like them, are the reason Israel can not let a terrorist organization win. The hostages still being held in Gaza, some as young (or younger) than our sweet grand-nephew, are the reason no ceasefire should be considered until they are returned. Hamas is the aggressor. In a rural farming community everyone knew each other, and there weren't hundreds of kids. Obviously we always wore costumes that covered our features, and parents had to go unseen. There aren't enough words to express how incredible John Mayer's Solo concert at Madison Square Garden was tonight. John made it seem like we were all just hanging out there together, almost as if by chance, and he got out his guitars and played us some songs. There is a special kind of magic that happens when people come together to hear music they love, and that magic was amplified by John taking the stage on his own, with no band and no intermission; just two + hours of sheer joy. The first two photos are my favorites of the few I took during the show. The next two feature tour photographer Thomas Falcone at work (what a great job that would be)! The last photo is, from left to right, Shelby, Sam, me and Josie. We all bought our tickets in the 24 hours before tonight's show, we all came on our own and were all sitting next to each other. What are the odds? Shelby saw Tuesday's show and loved it so much she decided to come to Wednesday's show, too. This was Sam's first time seeing John live. It was my third time, and then there was Josie. Josie has seen John in concert well over 100 times!! It's a great story - she and her friends used to hang out with John and his band backstage at dive bars when they were just getting started. How cool is that?
