A glimpse of Pongal Sankranti and Uttarayan. Uttarayan literally means moving towards North and this day Sun starts moving towards northern hemisphere. Looks like Sun God didn’t get the memo this year coz we got loads of snow on all 3 days. Being part Kannadati, part Telugu and part Tambram, we follow a bit of all the traditions and celebrate in our unique way by preparing five types of Pongal, share ellu bella and make Sakkare Acchu. Growing up Amma celebrated Pongal in a grand way (4 days) as it’s one of the biggest festivals in Tamil Nadu - Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Maatu Pongal & Kaanum Pongal. This year it was nice that the long weekend coincided with Sankranti, we visited Balaji temple in Bridgewater one day and Mahalakshmi temple in DE to watch Andal Kalyanam. A funny anecdote comes to mind whenever I watch Andal Kalyanam. Amma had a group of friends who would recite Tiruppavai pasurams every year during the month of Marghazhi and the last day would be Andal Kalyanam. One year our Bharatanatyam group performed dance drama about Andal’s life and devotion. I wanted to be the lead, they made me Ranganathar instead since I was the tallest in our group. I was very unhappy through out the practice sessions until Prabhat kalavidharu( one of the best drama troupes in BLR) brought their makeup artists for the show. The facial makeup was too good for a 9 year old that I requested Amma to let me sleep with makeup on and was sad to take bath the next day. I wish I had few pics from that show. Every year I would perform 2-3 shows but felt I was too skinny, didn’t look good and never purchase any photos. If I could turn back the clock. Saree in the frame in a gorgeous Kanji I purchased in Kanchipuram. It has a simple border and the bold motifs are unique mythical creature which till date is a mystery. Outdoor pics were clicked when the wind speed was 45 mph and it just took few seconds for me to freeze.
