The illustration done partly in photoshop and then in procreate has been done inspired by a siddhar paadal (siddha poem) called ‘Nandhavanathil oru aandi’ written by Kaduveli Siddhar. நந்தவனத்தில் ஓர் ஆண்டி - அவன் நாலாறு மாதமாய்க் குயவனை வேண்டி கொண்டு வந்தான் ஒரு தோண்டி - மெத்தக் கூத்தாடிக் கூத்தாடிப் போட்டுடைத்தாண்டி” Meaning of the song - Nandhavam means the Earth and Aandi refers to the human. A human born in the face of the Earth garden comes with nothing in his hand, so he is a poor man. He comes into existence on this earth after ten months. So those ten months are being interpreted as the human begging the creator (God) for his existence by bringing his physical body to this Earth garden. His body is referred to as the pot that holds his life and hence the Potter is God. And all his ten months of penance goes of waste once he carelessly roams on the face of the earth unconcerned about his health and thereby breaking the Pot (body) - his life and existence - which he brought into this Garden (Earth) after ten months of effort. This song moved me ever since I came across it on a random wall and I wanted to illustrate it according to my understanding at that time. That is how I came up with the idea of an ascetic doing his daily kriya before dawn after taking a dip in the stream. The whole place has a glow to it by the grace of the moon and a million fireflies around the area. Proper sadhana, natural food and a beautiful surrounding is all that seems to be necessary for an aspirant. About this illustration: The illustration is a piece of expression of the divine meeting of Rama Doot Hanuman and awakening of Vibhishan in Lanka Kingdom as described in the divine verses of Sundara Kandam. Hanuman ji searches entire Lanka’s temples for Sita Ji assuming that wherever Mata Sita resides becomes a temple. Hanuman Ji could find a place where Sri Rama’s weapons were placed and also a Tulsi Plant at the entrance. This was Ravana’s brother, Vibhishan’s house. Hanuman Ji took the form of a Brahmin and approaches Vibhishan. When Vibhishan asks Lord hanuman as to who he is, Hanuman simply informs that he is an ordinary messenger of Lord Rama. When asked by Hanuman, Vibhishan says that he is like a tongue who is concealed by all his relatives who are demons. Lord Hanuman soothes Vibhishan by saying that with age teeth will fall and tongue remains intact. Similarly, with his good deeds, Vibhishan will survive while his demonic brethren will fall. After the above exchange, Hanuman ji makes Vibhishan realise that Lord Rama and Mata Sita are like their parents and to discharge the supreme duty of reuniting them. Hearing this and attaining enlightenment, Vibhishan divulges that Mata Sita is in the Ashok Vatika in Lanka and guides Hanuman on how to reach AshokVatika. . About the illustration: This illustration explores the theme of the ‘road not taken’. In life, we all arrive at crossroads where we need to choose one path or the other, and having chosen one path, there’s no going back. And yet, we often wonder what may have been if we had chosen the other path. The illustration depicts these hard choices by contrasting colours and imagery on either side, each with its own attractions. About the Illustration: “Create your life” is a series of visual reminders to help move through everyday life with more intention and love. What started as a simple idea to create a revamped set of visual reminders became a full blown series after listing down various ideas and shortlisting the ones that are most relevant/important for the current phase. . . About the Style: Created this series in the modern art style Art Deco to keep the visuals simple yet relatable. Art Deco felt perfect to keep the compositions flow into one another and to add some quirk and abstract elements. . . About my experience: FunFact: I tried to implement the reminders during this illustration process. Started with a clear goal which helped to get to other steps. Whenever I got stuck, came back to the goal and implemented the steps that made most sense to it. It was good to witness everything fall into place as I progressed one step at a time. One of the main things I wanted to experiment with this illustration was the composition - something that works well overall but also makes sense as individual panels as I was going for a series. I also spent more time thinking, writing and conceptualizing when compared to the actual time of creating the illustration. Loved this process because it was mostly done with a lot of thought put into it and some parts were done with no rhyme or reason. This balance helped to keep the process interesting. Grateful for this opportunity. . .
