・ 旧千代田生命本社ビル（目黒区総合庁舎）｜村野・森建築事務所 1966竣工 2003改修 「目黒区総合庁舎（旧千代田生命本社ビル）建築ガイドツアー」、締切直前にイベントに気づいて応募したところ、抽選が通って見学へ。ふだんは、書類を提出したり、あるいは受け取ったりと、まさに役所として利用していて、少し建築も眺めてはみるものの、じっくりと見学したことがなかったが、良い機会と、喜び勇んで足を運んだ。 この建築をなんとも不思議な印象に仕立てあげているのは、鋳造によるアルミ製フレームが特徴的なファサードだ。このどこまでも繰返し可能な単位の連続でつくりだされる表情は、得も言われぬ雰囲気を醸し出している。パネルの頂部がオープンエンドなために、まるで延長可能なようにも見える。モチーフの反復とずらしは、村野が得意とする操作だが、この拡張性を感じさせるかたちは、他でも試みられているのだろうか。 と、その特異なアルミパネルによる格子に目を奪われていると、ガイドから、直行する壁面に用いられている大理石のテッセラにも注意を向けるように促される。アルミと大理石の取合い部分を「勝ち負け」というよりは両者が組み合わさった「引き分け」のように表現しているとの解説であった。石の表面は樹脂系の素材で、あとから保護されていて、その保護膜が劣化して茶色く変色しているが、もとは石の粒子が光を反射するような繊細な表情であったという。アルミの光沢と隣り合うと、どんなふうに見えたのか、想像が膨らむ。 「和風や洋風の意匠を自在に取り扱って、それらがどの視点から見ても、層をなして展開していることが、この建築の特色なのではないか」 「窓をもたない閉じられた空間に作る和室の工夫も村野が得意とする表現」 など詳細だが、わかりやすい解説が耳に残る。 広場（現在は駐車場）に描かれていた辻晋堂の作品や、その広場に顔をのぞかせる茶室、付近に展開する和室、元食堂の作り方、階段の造形から、アプローチにおける工夫などなど、予定の2時間を少々オーバーしたが、充実のガイドだった。最後にお礼がてらに挨拶をさせてもらったところ、ガイドを担当されていたのは、日本大学芸術学部の若原一貴氏（@kazuki_wakahara）であった。 建築ガイドツアーは今年で20周年を迎えたという。それだけ長期間にわたり開催されてきたことに、驚かされる。今年は4日間の開催だが、私たちが訪れた日は、69名の参加者で、300名くらいの応募があったそうだ。8名ほどのグループに分かれたが、専門家は3名で、高校生の親子連れも参加していた。「建築鑑賞を楽しむ」ことが少しずつ拡がりを見せているのは、こうした継続的な取り組みが下地となっているのだろう。 一見しただけでは分かり難いような、工芸的なセンスが散りばめられていて、味わい深いという表現がピタリという建築で、落ち着いた語り口で紹介される一つひとつの魅力を堪能するような体験であった。 #建築ガイド #ガイドツアー #村野藤吾 #千代田生命本社 #目黒区総合庁舎 #architecturalguide #togomurano #japanesemodernarchitecture #facadedesign #teahouse #stairdesign

On 14 May 1940 heavy aerial bombardment by the German Luftwaffe destroyed the entire historic city center of Rotterdam, leaving some 258 hectares uninhabitable. 711 people were killed and some 80,000 became homeless over night. Countless buildings, including shops, apartment buildings, theaters, workshops and museums, were reduced to mere rubbles. In view of this degree of devastation the city’s officials reacted with suprising verve: already in July a first reconstruction plan was drawn up by Willem Gerrit Witteveen but whose implementation was interrupted by the German occupiers. At the same time progressive architects and business people fiercely criticized the plan for its traditional concept, one of the reasons why Witteveen took sick leave in April 1944. His assistant Cornelis van Traa then developed a functionally divided plan that was in line with current developments in urban planning and which formed the basis of the comprehensive reconstruction of Rotterdam between 1945 and 1970. This period also is the reference frame of Paul Groenendijk‘s guide „Rotterdam Wederopbouwstad - Die 100 beste gebouwen“, published by @nai010_publishers in 2022. It collects 100 of the city‘s best buildings realized between 1945 and 1970 from all kinds of typologies, e.g. office buildings, cinemas, churches but also single-family houses and apartment buildings. These can easily be spotted on the handy maps included which will surely help maneuver the city even without electronic aids. Beyond this there are two other noteworthy features of the guide: one is the inclusion of notable buildings in the proximity of the featured buildings, the other is a number of essays highlighting and contextualizing important aspects of the reconstruction of Rotterdam. Through the latter the reader learns about the aforementioned planning history, new districts, the use of modular building principles or the manifold art in architecture and the public realm. Consequently Paul Groenendijk’s architectural guide is handy yet thoroughly informative and certainly inspires to roam the city and discover fascinating postwar architecture!

If you have seen the documentary “Infinite Space - The Architecture of John Lautner” you might remember Jan-Richard Kikkert and Tycho Saariste, two dedicated Lautner enthusiasts who, architects themselves, spent years researching John Lautner’s architecture. In the film one can see them start what would turn out to be an ambitious and very positively nerdy journey: to identify and locate all of Lautner’s remaining built works with the help of books, archival research and Google Maps. Luckily for all Lautner admirers they didn’t keep their findings to themselves but eventually compiled them in the present book: „Lautner A-Z. An Exploration of the Complete Built Work“, published by ArtEZ Press in 2018. It features 144 buildings (of which 103 were still around when the book was published), each annotated with relevant information regarding history and design. What makes each entry so highly readable and sometimes even funny is the fact that it includes the authors‘ personal stories of how they identified the building, travelled there and whether they were able to get inside (and how). „The final product is a road movie with 144 stops, the story of a unique tour de force, one which Jan-Richard and Tycho, as practicing architects with active professional lives, will most likely be able to undertake only once in their lifes“, writes Ko Jacobs in his foreword and it couldn’t be a more accurate description of the book!
