The remains of Col. Robert A. Alston, a Civil War veteran and DeKalb County legislator killed in a duel INSIDE the GA Capitol in 1879, are buried in Decatur Cemetery. But Alston's spirit lives in the Atlanta home he built in 1856 - or so say its current residents. Located on Alston Drive in East Lake Country Club, Meadow Nook is the second-oldest home in Atlanta, built in 1856 by Col. Robert A. Alston, it has been reported as haunted by several residents, according to the book "Civil War Ghosts of Atlanta," including some who reported dishes breaking when no one was in the kitchen. It's since been lovingly restored by Charlie and Sylvia Harrison, who peacefully co-exist with Alston's ghost, whom they refer to as "The Colonel." The Harrisons told Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine that relatives and guests from out of town have reported encounters with The Colonel. The couple also says they've had cabinet drawers mysteriously open to reveal lost items. 👻 Winecoff Hotel PART 1: Netherworld got nothin’ on the ol’ #WinecoffHotel aka present day #ellishotelatlanta. Built in 1913 and advertised as “fireproof,” this hotel fire was basically a Titanic on land waiting to meet a tragic end! I won’t get into the super nitty gritty but the details are SUPER DISTURBING. The building itself...was fireproof...it survived. But almost everything inside burnt to a crisp or jumped ship. The place thought it was so fireproof that there were no fire escapes and no sprinklers. The captain went down with the ship here too- the Winecoffs actually lived upstairs. Craziest thing to me is that it was built in 1913 but didn’t go up in flames til 1946! That’s a good run ugh. So of the 304 guests, 119 DIED, 65 injured, and 120 ish rescued. Even a fireman or two died during the mayhem when someone jumped out the window and landed on him. DISASTER. This place must be haunted!! Back to spooky town! Hardy Ivy was allegedly the first (white) settler within the city limits of present day Atlanta. He was from South Carolina, and bought a plot of land here in 1833, where he built a log cabin. The land belonged to Native Americans before the “Creek Indian Cession of 1821.” In typical old timey fashion, Hardy was thrown from his horse and killed during the winter of 1841–1842. There is a plaque on the ATnT building to mark where Hardy's cabin once stood. The image on slide 2 is close to what it looked like. Also in typical Atlanta fashion, His grave is rumored to be under the PARKING GARAGE to the west of the AT&T Communications Building, right across Peachtree Center Ave. Creepy right? Some folks say they’ve been stuck going around and around the parking deck looking for an exit for HOURS in the middle of the night. Others report a creepy attendant at the entrance holding a lantern as the gates open. This Southern Bell building is really cool - if you can pretend the brown stick coming out the top isn’t there. The first six stories completed in 1929 are a true example of Art Deco architecture. Then the depression hit and the building had to wait until 1946 for the next set of floors. The brown tower was added in the 60s. Southern Bell was a telephone company and began as the Atlanta Bell Franchise in 1882. Now this is an ATnT building. 300 W Peachtree St NW is Hardy Ivy Park. Last Haunted Castle (couldn't find anything about it being haunted but you know it is haha) Designed & built by former Confederate Ferdinand McMillan as a retirement home. He called it Fort Peace & the building attracted attention as soon as construction began. At McMillan's death in 1920, it was noted as a city landmark at a time when the full flush of the Victorian architectural heritage in all its diversity still defined the face of Atlanta. The Castle was put up for auction in early 2020 and in December 2020 the winning bid of $3,225,000 was placed by The Simpson Organization, Inc., an Atlanta Midtown real estate investment firm. Over the decades, The Castle has been an Artist’s dwelling, beatnik cafe, whiskey bar, and a few restaurants. It has also appeared in a few tv shows. Back in the day, there was a water fountain at the base of a grotto for passerbyes to enjoy a drink. It was named “Uncle Remus Spring” and featured little bunny rabbit statue/figurines. McMillan and Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales were friends. There are plenty of ‘renovated’ images of the Castle online. But I went down a deep dive trying to find old photos. Couldn’t find any. However - I stumbled upon images from a Flickr account from the early 2010s? During a pre renovation phase - big credit goes to Jeff Clemmons of the AJC. What blew my mind - is that there were medallions from the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition layered throughout the house. The expo’s goals were to foster trade between southern states and South American nations as well as to show the products and facilities of the region to the rest of the nation and to Europe. Basically the South wanted to redeem its tarnished image post Civil War and this was their open house. I think these medallions marked sections for each state within the expo. Happy Friday the 13th! Ever noticed this #castle on #peachtreestreet? #RhodesHall was built by the founder of Rhodes Furniture, Amos Rhodes, in 1904 and it is said to be haunted. The majority of the #paranormalactivity that goes on here has been attributed to the wife of Amos Rhodes who actually died in the property. She is said to play with the lights and there are reports of unexplained footsteps and disembodied voices. However, she is not alone in her haunting. Some visitors to the house have reported seeing apparitions of giggling children and the basement is said to be home to a much more malevolent presence which witnesses have described as a dark and evil shadow figure. I had made these designs about Dekalb Ave because I love the potholes there so much. Some of them have been with me my whole life know what I’m sayin? We’ve shared so many memories together listening to music and popping my tires. So I made these designs and took them to city of Atlanta to see if they wanted to do something with them. But to my surprise they totally took it the wrong way. They actually were really curious about why these designs emphasized potholes and demons. After I explained how nice Dekalb Ave has been my whole life they were even MORE shocked (at the whole life part specifically) - next thing you know, they’re asking me if I can hand out donuts while Mayor Dickens and the Pothole Posse starts repaving the road (slide 4) I was crying and trying to say goodbye to my pothole peeps - and people were driving by cheering and honking horns. It turns out I had been in a toxic relationship with the potholes and had no clue. Now that I’ve seen what a repaved Dekalb ave looks like I’m starting to get it. Change is hard but this one is good.
