Richard Thomason will take the Sioux Falls City Council's At-Large C seat after defeating Jordan Deffenbaugh in Tuesday's runoff election. The drastic changes unfolded in China and Hong Kong in the past decade or so, in particular the recent years, have prompted a rethink of foreign media and firms.
Last month US news outlet Radio Free Asia closed its Hong Kong office, citing concerns about staff safety amid concerns about the national security legislation. Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders said a representative was denied entry into the city, the first of its kind.
While facing more risks and an uncertain environment, foreign news outlets have reviewed their original game plan of reporting China from Hong Kong since the NSL was in place.
A host of questions could be raised.
If it is practically difficult, or simply impossible, to report China freely even from Hong Kong, what is the point of paying high costs for a big operation in the city? If Hong Kong is no longer an open, vibrant and diverse city with different voices, what is the Hong Kong story? Do any readers care? If WSJ can continue to provide a decent coverage of China stories from Singapore, why keep a strong presence in the city?

Johnny Ng, a Legislative Council Election Committee constituency member and a vice-chairman of the Guangdong association, said there was no special consideration about the choice of dates. That cannot be a more disingenuous statement that insults the wisdom of Hongkongers. Worse still, it rubs more salt to the wounds in the hearts of people inflicted by the military crackdown in Beijing. June 4 has been the most politically sensitive day in Hong Kong, both before and after 1997, for obvious reasons. It is an open secret that former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa had tried to persuade the Hong Kong Alliance led by late pro-democracy leader Szeto Wah to cancel the annual vigil following the sovereignty changeover and new constitutional framework. Despite the enduring political pressure, the candlelight commemoration had survived, which spoke volumes of the room for freedom of expression in the city, at least when it comes to June 4. The vanished candlelight vigil is not just a loss of a “beautiful sight”, but free expression of a feeling of sadness and remembrance for the dead and hope for a better tomorrow publicly. #Groundbreaking | Government wisdom on spending in doubt | Chris Yeung | At Large ▌Extract Financial Secretary Paul Chan said in this year’s budget the revised total deficit for the current financial year is forecast to reach HK$101.6 billion. The ballooning fiscal deficit has prompted his predecessor John Tsang to warn in a post on his Facebook last month “it is undeniable that Hong Kong has fallen into an era of structural deficit.” Tsang has urged the Government to cut costs and consider new revenue streams. In his budget, Chan did roll out plans to cut expenditure. They include a cut on funding for non-governmental welfare organisations and subsidies on examination fees for DSE students. Government’s justifications for cuts on expenditures on items relating to issues such as welfare and education will become more questionable when there are more revelations of alleged excessive and dubious government spendings. The failure of the Government to give a convincing case of its principle of allocation of resources in times of belt-tightening may further erode public trust in the Government and widen the divide between the Government and the people. Constitutionally and politically, the Legco is obliged to play a role in holding the Government accountable, in particular when it comes to the use of taxpayers’ money.
