I love Gabriela Tyselova's costumes for the way that they credibly place Erik in the Edwardian age, yet they keep the DNA of Maria Bjørnson's original costumes by tailoring them in the same birdseye silk jacquard that was/is used for the original Phantom costume. Even his cufflinks echo the design of the smaller, original Phantom ring, given to Christine in DJT. It's little details that make the difference in production design. While Australia's theatres are fully open again (lucky people), and Britain's theatres are preparing, still haven't heard anything about North American theatres. #PhantomPhriday - October 2017 - souvenir from the first time I actually met Ben (after fangirling for five years 😎). Fortunately for me, his run in the show coincided with a business trip I *had* to make both to the Midlands and London; the day his casting in Phantom was announced, I got my tickets for the show *then* booked my travel and research arrangements (priorities)...lol... I was only intending to see him work once, but had to fit in another visit to POTO before I went home, then flew back for more, and more...and there ya have it. Having said that, I'd been disappointed with the quality of US casts of Phantom since the mid 90s, and had even seen the show in NYC in June 2017, and it wasn't anything to write home about other than looking good and two cast members, so I was swearing I wasn't going to spend another penny on POTO. But I must admit, everyone in the London cast with Ben was great from leads down to the ensemble, and they reminded me what a magical show Phantom can be when EVERYONE is on their A-game. Casting makes all the difference in the world, and the casts I was privileged to see at Her Majesty's were the best I'd seen since Michael Crawford was still in the show. Long story short - four overseas trips to see Ben work in the space of 18 months. It's all down to the fact that he's incredibly talented, and a down to earth gent at heart... What's your Ben story? Feeling a little nostalgic because this time two years ago, I was getting ready to head back to London to see the last two evening performances of "Company." There's something about this mirror image of Ben that makes him look incredibly young. When I first glimpsed him, I thought he was far too young and good looking to play Erik, but the moment he opened his mouth and sang "Til I Hear You Sing," I was blown away. By the end of his hotel room scene with Anna, I knew he had the gravitas and acting chops to pull the role off effectively despite only being 31 when Erik should have been 60-ish according to Leroux cannon. I've been a fan of Ben's ever since. #PhantomPhriday Let's do a little before and after. For those of you who don't know about costume building/sewing, the muslin version of the coat Ben is wearing, along with Anna's garments are called "toiles." In the U.S. they're simply referred to as "muslins." They're made from a muslin or calico to test the fit and movement of newly drafted costume patterns on the actors. If there are any problems the section can be pinned closer or slashed and spread with additional fabric to ensure that the garment will fit properly when the fashion fabric is cut. Toiles also allow the director to see if anything special should be done with the actor's blocking, thus Ben flinging his coat back when he knelt down to lift Anna up. Not a happy Opera Ghost. Pretty good view of the prosthetics Ben had to wear eight shows a week as the Phantom. Michael Crawford used to say that wearing the combination of bald cap, prosthetics, make-up, wig, and mask was like being trapped inside a lift. Needless to say, 2020 was not the best year on record for many of us. I don't think there is a town on earth that hasn't been touched in some way by Coronavirus. Many of us have friends or family members who are no longer here because of the pandemic. Couldn't be more proud of him seeing him as part of this piece of genuine theatrical history!
