Belated Birthday Remembrance: #IrvingBerlin! 🤍🕊️ May 11, 1888: American composer and lyricist Irving Berlin was born on this date in 1888. Berlin is widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His music forms a great part of the Great American Songbook. He published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907, receiving 33 cents for the publishing rights, and had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911. He also was an owner of the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. It is commonly believed that Berlin could not read sheet music, and was such a limited piano player that he could only play in the key of F-sharp using his custom piano equipped with a transposing lever. "Alexander's Ragtime Band" sparked an international dance craze in places as far away as Berlin's native Russia, which also "flung itself into the ragtime beat with an abandon bordering on mania." Over the years he was known for writing music and lyrics in the American vernacular: uncomplicated, simple and direct, with his stated aim being to "reach the heart of the average American," whom he saw as the "real soul of the country." In doing so, said Walter Cronkite, at Berlin's 100th birthday tribute, he "helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives." He wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him famous before he turned thirty. During his 60-year career he wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films, with his songs nominated eight times for Academy Awards. Many songs became popular themes and anthems, including "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "Easter Parade", "Puttin' on the Ritz", "Cheek to Cheek", "White Christmas", "Happy Holiday", "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)", and "There's No Business Like Show Business". His Broadway musical and 1943 film This is the Army,[9] with Ronald Reagan, had #KateSmith singing Berlin's "God Bless America" which was first performed in 1938.

A second post honoring the birthday of Irving Berlin (1888 – 1989), the composer and lyricist whose work forms an integral part of America’s cultural DNA, despite --- perhaps because of --- the fact that he was a Russian-Jewish immigrant (like the grandparents of our own CD). Berlin, widowed suddenly when young, had his share of cloudy days. His first wife, Dorothy Goetz, contracted typhoid on their honeymoon in Havana, and died just six months after their marriage. His grief left him blocked, until, like countless other artists, he stopped trying to avoid it and instead, used it, creating his first ballad, "When I Lost You." Twelve years later he fell in love again, marrying a young writer, the Irish-Catholic heiress Ellin Mackay, in 1926. Full of joy when his first child, Mary Ellin, was born about 11 months later, he was able to turn these feelings, too, into lyrics, comparing them with his previous emotional terrain: I was blue, just as blue as I could be Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me Then good luck came a-knocking at my door Skies were gray, but they're not gray anymore Blue skies Smiling at me Nothing but blue skies Do I see Bluebirds Singing a song Nothing but bluebirds All day long Never saw the sun shining so bright Never saw things going so right Noticing the days hurrying by When you're in love, my how they fly We will continue posting on Berlin, in part because his life in some ways paralleled and also intersected, that of Crescent's late father, Maurice Zolotow. And in part because Irving Berlin, too, when one looks at the raw material of his life and the songs he created from it, proves, as Crescent tells us often, that "nothing is wasted on the writer." #irvingberlin #maricezolotow #lyricist #songwriter #jewishamericanheritagemonth #itsadragonslife #thecreativelife

OTD in Music History: "Great American Songbook" composer Irving Berlin (1888 - 1989) is born in an impoverished Jewish shtetl in Imperial Russia. (Along with his family, he would subsequently emigrate to America at the age of five.) Regarded by many as the single greatest songwriter in American history, during a remarkable career that spanned more than 60 years Berlin penned an estimated 1,500 songs -- including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films. Some of Berlin's most popular and memorable individual compositions include "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Easter Parade," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Cheek to Cheek," "White Christmas," "Happy Holiday," "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)," "God Bless America," and "There's No Business Like Show Business." Perhaps even more remarkably, Berlin was one of only two famous "Great American Songbook" composers who regularly wrote *both* the music and the lyrics to his songs. (The other was Cole Porter [1891 - 1964].) George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) called Berlin "the single greatest songwriter that has ever lived," and Jerome Kern (1885 - 1945) opined that "Irving Berlin has no place in American music -- because he is American music." For his own part, however, Berlin always claimed that he "did not believe in inspiration"; rather, he insisted that his most successful compositions were "purely the result of assiduous work." Berlin also noted that he did most of his best work under pressure; he would typically begin writing after dinner and continue until 4 or 5 in the morning." Each day I would attend rehearsals," he later reminisced, "and then, at night, I'd write another song to bring with me the next day..." PICTURED: A 1971 typed letter from Berlin to Harry Ruby (1895 - 1974), literally reminiscing about "the good old days." Ruby was a fellow noted American songwriter who was inducted into the "American Songwriters Hall of Fame" the year before this letter was written. #music #classicalmusic #musictheory #musichistory #Ragtime #IrvingBerlin #TinPanAlley #Broadway #Jazz #swing #autograph #JazzStandards #HarryRuby #GeorgeGershwin #Gershwin #WhiteChristmas #GodBlessAmerica

May 11 is the birthday of Irving Berlin (1888 – 1989) ), the deeply American composer and lyricist whose work forms an integral part of America’s cultural DNA. Yet Berlin was a Russian-Jewish Immigrant. May, as it happens, is Jewish American Heritage Month, an annual recognition of American Jews and their achievements and contributions to this country. First proclaimed such by President George Bush in 2006, the month has had annual affirmations made by every president since, and there couldn't be a better example than Berlin. Though not native-born, he wrote the uber-patriotic "God Bless America." Though not a Christian (or, for that matter, a religious Jew), he wrote the sentimental Christmas favorite "I'm Dreaming of a) White Christmas." Though anything but a rootin-tootin' Wild West cowboy, he wrote the lyrics to Annie Get Your Gun, the smash 1946 Broadway musical about legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her romance with Frank Butler. I’m going to do a series of posts about this extraordinary man --- and his connection and parallels with my father's story --- throughout today’s posts. #irvingberlin #maricezolotow #GodBlessAmerica #lyricist #songwriter #jewishamericanheritagemonth #itsadragonslife #thecreativelife

Happy 136th birthday to Irving Berlin, the single greatest songwriter in American history (5/11/1888-9/22/1989) Born Israel Beilin (ישראל ביילין in Yiddish) to a Jewish family in the Russian Empire, his family immigrated to America fleeing Tsarist persecution when he was only five. At a young age, a young Berlin made a name for himself on Tin Pan Alley, publishing his first song in 1907 and having achieving international fame in 1911 at just 23 with “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, he would write Broadway songs that would become stables of American pop music, from “Puttin’ On The Ritz”, “Blue Skies”, and “Cheek To Cheek”. Irving Berlin earned such fame by writing thoroughly American songs rooted in the langauge and keeping up with popular music (especially jazz). Berlin would go on to shape the totality of American music, from writing countless Christmas classics (ironic as he was a proud Jew) like “White Christmas”, “Silver Bells”, and “Easter Parade”. To the song that expressed his love of the country that game him everything and felt indebted to, “God Bless America”, which has since become a second national anthem for the US. With a career spanning over six decades and writing over 1500 songs, original scores for 20 Broadway plays, and 14 Hollywood films, lord only knows how different American (and thereby global) music would be without this one man. #history #todayinhistory #onthisday #may10 #birthday #happybirthday #famousbirthdays #celebrity #songwriter #composer #irvingberlin #godblessamerica #whitechristmas #blueskies #puttinontheritz #theresnobusinesslikeshowbusiness

Fred Astaire. Born 10 May, 1899 Photograph by Ernest Bacrach, 1937. When I was assembling photos to glue onto the folding screen (2) that represented a sort of pantheon of twentieth century deities, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation about including Fred Astaire. (He was placed next to Lee Wiley and beneath Diana Vreeland and above Marcel Proust and Cole Porter). As a dancer he was the epitome of style and grace; but he was also a marvellous interpreter of popular song. Indeed, the famous composers of the era (Kern, Porter, Berlin, Arlen, Gershwin) could have no finer exponent of their music and when they wrote for Fred Astaire, they created some of their very best work —there was a symbiotic relationship between artist and composer, and we are the richer for it. Born a hundred and twenty five years ago, Fred Astaire remains one of life’s essentials. #fredastaire #irvingberlin

Day 9 of Jewish Heritage Month: Irving Berlin’s biggest contribution to music in the Jewish community was his ability to blend Jewish melodies and themes with American popular music, creating songs that resonated with both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences. He infused elements of his Jewish heritage into many of his compositions, subtly incorporating Jewish motifs and melodies into his iconic American tunes. This fusion helped bridge cultural divides and promote understanding and appreciation of Jewish culture within the broader American context. #jewishheritagemonth #irvingberlin
