I was so disappointed when the ‘Nature
eaks the Code’ piece didn’t work out as planned, and started to decompose itself way more rapidly than any of my samples.
Now I’m so grateful as I fell down a moss rabbit hole and have learnt even more cool stuff about moss. Moss is a producer and decomposer, it plays a valuable roll in the life cycle of its environment.
I can’t wait to experiment more to see what role moss could play in tackling textile waste. There’s even mosses that specialise in decaying animal matter, which wool and other animal fibres are. The possibility are endless.

I spent the four days of Easter 2002 turning one of my outbuildings into a dark-room. Two years later my ex-wife “accidentally” locked me in there on one of hottest days on record while she went on a day-long shopping trip. That day in “the cooler”, to quote from prisoner of war movie “The Great Escape”, was a turning point in our relationship, and within a year or two we were divorced. I had dreamed of a dark-room for years, pouring over Ansel Adams’s books on the subject: “The Negative” and “The Print” Adams is best known for his landscape photographs, but he also applied his perfectionism to images of buildings and interiors. I recall reading his account of one: he agonised over the alignment of a picture frame in the image. Some fashion photographers make great use of diagonals adding dynamism to their images. However, I am mainly in the camp of the great Andreas Gursky of the Dusseldorf School: horizontal compositions provide calmness to the viewer. And, like most film photographers, I try to compose in-camera, avoiding cropping. Similar to Adams’s picture frame, I agonised over the alignment of the bottom of the front-most column in this picture, and the top of the second-column from the back. These are tiny details, I accept. But it is the tiny details which help to make a good photograph. One of the characteristics of light is its colour. The colour of light is measured in Kelvin, after the mathematician and physicist Lord Kelvin who developed the absolute temperature scale. At 0 degrees Kelvin, molecules stop moving. If you heat up a metal, then it will start to glow. At 3000 degrees Kelvin, the metal object would glow orange. At 5500K it would glow at a colour similar to the sun and clouds on a summer’s day. And at 10,000K it would glow blue. This photograph was taken using an overcast sky as the light source, which had a colour temperature of approximately 7000K. ie the light source was relatively blue. Most digital cameras enable the photographer to set the colour temperature of the sensor to adjust for blueness or orangeness of the light source. One can either make the change manually or let the camera make the adjustment automatically. In the days of film, white balance was not so easy. Films were balanced for sunlight (5500K) or tungsten lighting (3400K). If the light source had a different temperature than the film sensitivity, then one would have to use blue or orange filters, sometimes so thick that you could barely see through them. Most photographers, including myself, didn’t bother. However, this limitation of film led to interesting, and often beautiful results which have now been lost with automatic white balance adjustment. And so for this photograph, I set the white balance similar to that of film (5560K) which resulted in a blue tinge because the light source was at 7000K. I really like this blue cast. It invokes coldness.
