Knowing Your Ring Settings Part 3 💍 Bezel (tube) setting: A bezel is a band of metal surrounding the gem and holding it in place. The bezel may either fully or partially encircle the stone Advantages 👍 Bezel setting provides good protection for the girdle and pavilion areas of gems. It can be used to set almost all gemstones without causing damage to them. It provides a smooth ring surface, which does not typically snag clothing. When done properly, it holds gems well and does not require repair or maintenance later on. A partial bezel setting reveals more of a stone, while also allowing more light into them as well as offering good protection. Disadvantage 👎 This style is usually more time consuming and expensive as compared to claw and bead setting. #jewellerysettings #jewellerysetting #bezelset #bezelsetting #bezelsetring #bezelsettings #bezelsetdiamond #bezelsetdiamonds #bezelsettingtips #bezelsetengagementring

Here is a tip for setting super thick bezels sponsored by @turquoise_moose (and featuring one of their gorgeous turquoise bars) Once you have your setting created you will want to chamfer the edge. This is done by filing a 45 degree angle on the top edge of your setting. To do this I started with a 1 cut file to rapidly remove material, then a 3 cut file and then I used sanding sticks 320-800 grit to get the bezel smooth again. I use this technique when working with 1mm+ wire (this setting was made with 2mm thick wire.) Thick bezels will need to be hammer set, this action of chamfering the bevel will remove enough material so we can push down the bezel with a clean look. I hope you found this technique helpful! I’ve been working on more open bezel pendants today . . . I thought some of you might like to see a few of the various stages involved. It’s fairly intricate work but it’s lovely when the glass is set as you get the light shining through. I’ve tried several ways of doing this, and would still love to get a neat finish with just pushing in the bezel strip back and front but have never been too successful. Has anyone ? 😌 . . . #whatsonmybench #howitsmade #bezelsetting #bezelsettingtips #handmadeisbetter #handmadejewellery #fridayvibes #inmyhappyplace #intheshed #scottishjeweller #scottishborders

Here is a tip to keep multiple projects organized at once from @carryatorchltd - “I try to work on many projects at a time to be the most efficient I can be while I am in my studio. To help keep my workspace manageable, my pieces organized and my sanity, I picked up these triangle bead trays from Amazon. They come in packs of 6 and are fairly inexpensive. I have many of them and have numbered them each with small stickers. I like to use these not only to keep all the pieces intended for a specific item together but they also keep little things from getting lost or rolling off my workspace. At this time I am working on 8 necklaces that all have similar components and stones but they are slightly different in shape and size. As I work on each piece I use my scribe to number my silver with the same number on the tray. I do this on the backplate inside my bezel where no one will see it when it is finished. I then go over it in sharpie so I can see it clearer. Throughout the process of going in and out of the pickle, polishing and tumbling, the sharpie will come off, so the scribed number is my backup.  I write the same number on the back on the cabochon with either a sharpie or white paint pen if the back is dark. Overall these trays keep my workspace tidy(er) and keeps me on task enabling me to take multiple pieces from start to finish in a more efficient manor.“ Thank you for sharing your process with us! Taking the extra step to mark your work will save so much frustration and time later on! #bezelsettings #bezelsettingtips #jewelryproductiontips #makingstonesettings

Speedy stone setting. Obviously it isn't really this quick and easy! There have been many times I've completely ruined a piece at this stage, scratching or cracking a stone after slipping with my bezel pusher! I have to remind myself not to get too excited to see the finished piece. Very slow and steady always wins the race! After this, I burnish the setting- which is just as dangerous for the setting if you slip or use a heavy hand 😅

Here are several bezel tips from @taylorsaleem - “Bezel Hacks! 1. Stone too short? Bezel too y’all? Coil a bit of wire and place it inside the bezel before setting the stone. 2. Bezel a little too snug? Roll it on your bench block with a steel punch. This will stretch the metal and make for an easier fit. 3. Use WASHI tape to get a closer bezel fit. Wrap a piece of tape around your stone. Mark where the tape overlaps. Lay the tape along your bezel strip and snip. Make sure your ends are flush (hold it up to the light and be sure none peeks through a gap), and solder away.” Taylor is a jeweler of color and member of this community. I wanted to showcase some of her work and share a small part of her story in her words, follow her to see more of her beautiful work! “ I’ve been creating jewelry since 2010, when I was asked to either go on probation at my current job (I wasn’t very good at it) or take a severance. I took the exit and set up a studio. 2. I’m deeply inspired by flowers. They speak a language that’s hard for me to use in my own words - empathy, passion, wisdom. They’re all so different yet harmonious when joined in a bouquet.” Thank you so much for sharing what inspires you and for sharing these awesome #bezelsettingtips #bezels #washitape #tape

**Tint tip** Always pop a piece of thick thread or dental floss under a cabochon stone when testing out your bezel! If you do get it stuck there is a few things to try: 1) Double sided tape/ gaffa tape to try and lift it off 2) Pop the piece in a box with a lid and shake it around 3) Hold the piece or the setting with your hand and bang your hand against the table with force 4) Gently prize the bezel open around the edge with a burnisher 5) Last resort - drill a tiny hole at the back of the bezel and push the stone up with the back of a drill bit or a scribe . #bezelsettingtips #bezelsettingtip #bezelsetting #bezelsettings #settingcabochons #cabochonstonesetting #laceagate #bezelsetring #cabochonstonesetting

It looks funny/strange but here I’m setting the point of the bezel first. I place the setting against something that doesn’t move (my bench block) and then with my bezel pusher and a hammer, I lightly tap the bezel over the stone starting at the point and moving my way around. This way the bezel fits nice and snug with no gaps. 🤗

Digital calipers should be your new best friend 👯‍♀️🎉 A very good layout tip that I use all the time is to invest in a decent pair of digi calipers and use then as scribe. . I love this technique to scribe a line to cut down sheet metal with my bench shear and to layout a little grid on the metal surface to guide me when I’m drilling many repetitive holes. . How it works: turn on the calipers, pinch them tightly together, hit Zero. Next, open them until you hit your desired measurement, then lock them in place by tightening that top knob. Now you are ready to scribe! Hold the inside edge of the caliper against the edge of the metal and drag it down the length of your piece. This makes a perfectly parallel line (as pictured, 2mm from the edge). . If you want to cut that strip off, leave your caliper set, cut down the line, then repeat! May I suggest this for making perfect bezels?! . If you are looking to make a grid, open the caliper up to 4mm and scribe again. Then 6mm, and on and on📐 Hit me up with any questions and peek the calendar for March classes 🗓 . . . . #jewelryclassespdx #learntometalsmith #learnjewelrymaking #bezelsettingtips #learninpdx #babeswithhammers #instasmithy #madeinpdx #metalsmithsocietytips

Repost @metalsmithsociety Here is another use for alligator tape while setting bezels from @flameandstone - “Ok so the alligator tape trick is nice because it protects both the metal and the stone. It also provides a bit of slip resistance. I had leather on there but it eventually wore through and I didn’t have a leather scrap lying around, but I always have alligator tape! It doesn’t hold up as long, but it’s convenient and it works! I just wound it around the rocker, you’ll have to just adjust the thickness based on your preference. Then rock away! I go around both the base and the top, using the rocker both vertically and horizontally. Gives a nice non-marred secure stone hold, then you can use a bezel pusher, burnished, whatever you use, and have minimal clean up!” Thank you SO much for taking the time to send this! I think this will be super helpful to so many people! If you have tips on stone setting send them to me! A great way to send a tip is to email me pics and a written caption! Doh...! Made my bezel too small but luckily my ring mandrel will save the day. Just a light hammer with a rubber mallet and she’s good to go.

Here is a fabulous production tip from @danaantoniadesigns when managing multiple bezels - "Today I had an ah-ha moment as I’m working my way through what I call a “Bezel Marathon” - I always find myself in this position the week before I have a craft show when I think “oh! I totally have enough time to make a million pairs of ______!” This week it’s stud earrings, which means making a ton of bezels for a ton of stones. I thought I would share how I keep everyone organized during this process as to keep the stones with their bezels. I match each bezel to each stone and sand the bezels down (as close as possible) to the correct height. I then lay them out on my silver sheet (or big-enough scraps) and trace out groupings. Smaller groupings help to make sure everybody’s heating up equally during soldering. Once I’ve cut the smaller shapes out of sheet, I make myself a diagram where I trace each shape and place the stones on my drawings so I know which stones are where on the silver pieces. The pieces being oddly shaped is a benefit because it helps to tell them all apart. While the bezels are pickling, I use small Avery labels to number each stone within a size category and stick them to the backs of the stones. I then scribe the numbers into the corresponding bezels before I cut them out. This way I can match the numbered stones & bezels when it comes time for setting! I used to just write numbers next to the stones, but I inevitably bump the tray and misplace everyone so the labels are a huge help." WE HAVE ALL BUMPED A TRAY DANA!!! 🤣 This is such a fabulous solution, and the perfect time of year for it. Thank you so much for sharing. If you have a different method we'd LOVE to hear about it and you can also shoot me an email with pictures!🙏🏻 #metalsmith #ladysmith #bezelsetting #bezelsettingtips #jewelrystudent #jewelrymakingcommunity #learnjewelrymaking

My Thursday Tool Talk. 😊 I recently upped my bezel setting game by *finally* realizing that the setting needs to be immobilized so you can really push hard on the bezel walls to bring them around the stone. Holding the setting in one hand and pushing with the other does not give you enough leverage, even with 28 ga fine silver bezel wire. I’m not in a position at the moment to invest in a GRS system so I found the next best thing—Jet Basic Fixturing Compound! Swipe left to see how I encased one of these dangles and squished it into a Universal Work Holder. Mark at @riogrande has a great video on how to mix up this stuff in a temperature controlled hotpot. You don’t need much and I’ve been reusing two tiny batches I originally made. I differ from Mark’s video by only using a small strainer in my hotpot and no tongs. The compound sticks to everything except your fingers! 😂 I plop the first small glob of hardened compound into the strainer in the pre-warmed hotpot and when it turns clear I lift the strainer out and pick up the goopy mixture and start forming it around my bezel. At the same time I also place it on my work holder and screw the device closed around the compound. Be careful to press the softened mixture flat around the bezel so no lumps and ridges will get in the way of your bezel setting tools after it dries. I then set it aside to dry and harden and drop my other small lump of hardened compound into the hotpot. When I’ve finished setting I unscrew the work holder and dip the glob with the piece of jewelry into the hotpot until I can pull it loose from the softening compound. I don’t need it to be completely softened to remove the piece. I go back and forth like this and when I’m done I set the globs I’ve been using in little dishes to harden for storage. This has been a game changer for me and the bezels in my latest work reflect that! What changes have you made to up your jewelry making game? 🔨🔥💎

Here is a tool maintenance tip and some excellent advice from @purifiedbill -“Gotta keep those pushers clean! just like hammers, if you have dings or scratches on your bezel pushers, you will get dings and scratches on your bezels! I use 1200 grit sand paper/sanding belt to polish up my pushers. But really its up to the user. The more polished they are the more they slide. Using something like 600 grit will make it more grippy if you like to roll the pusher rather than slide it! Also it’s great to have as many shapes, sizes and types as you can. Steel, brass, delrin, wood, try everything you can think of! I can't tell you how many times a setting wasn't going well and I switch pushers and boom perfect!” Thanks so much Bill! So important to examine your tools and if they are damaged or in need of a polish, handle that! 🙌 #metalsmithing #jewelrytools #jewelrymakingtipoftheday #bezelsetting #bezelsettingtips
