I usually write something long and profound around the time of my birthday, but I just want to take a moment to appreciate the two people responsible for my 39 years on this planet, who arguably still have as much to do with keeping me alive at 39 as they did at 3-9 months! They prop me up on a bad day and they lift me up on the best days. Always supportive of my hobbies and passions and getting on board with whatever I want to do that makes me happy, which has taken many twists and turns over the years, but is strongly influenced by baked goods these days. So it’s an honour, as has become the new tradition, to spend my birthday with them, brunching and bakery hunting around Suffolk. This year, we started off in the usual Woodbridge, for brunch @honeyandharvey and buying something random in our favourite vintage shop @vintage_49 (last year it was a swan egg cup and this year it was a vase that my mum said looked very much like one her Nana used to own). Then on to @pinch.suffolk on @maple_farm_kelsale just outside of Saxmundham for some delicious crullers made from flour milled at the farm and a delightfully warm welcome from Alice and team who had very kindly reserved me one of each flavour cruller (including a bonus complimentary birthday cruller). The crullers (deep fried choux pastry - I must confess, I did not know this - in a variety of different flavours) were surprisingly light - Dad had inhaled the cinnamon one before I’d had a chance to get both legs under the bench table, though not before I’d taken pictures, I’ve trained him better than that! Finally, back to my parents for a slice of cake my mum had made for me and a game of “hunt the plastic candle holders” which she had lost deep into the cake after a trial run of candles to take a picture for her Facebook friends’ approval the day previous, and then wedged more on top of for the official singing and blowing out rituals! #thisis39 #birthdaytraditions #withmyparents #visitsuffolk #suffolkeats #woodbridge #saxmundham #bakerylove #bakeryhunting #theunlikely_foodie #inmyhappyplace #crullers

Tiwai Island is a wildlife sanctuary on the Moa River in Sierra Leone. We stayed in a welcoming village just across the river from the island for a couple of nights and had plenty of opportunities to explore the area. I was feeling quite lethargic by this point (thanks malaria parasites) but I did manage to participate in a couple of activities. There are a plethora of birds and monkeys to be seen while walking around the island, but my favorite part was riding in a tiny wooden canoe along the river with my tent mate Anne and guide Mamadou. The river is often calm, but there were some small rapids that made things interesting. I don’t have much energy to explain everything rn (I’ll try to give a more elaborate update later), but after finding out I’ve had some growth, my doctor wants me to take a break from chemo and then try to get into a clinical trial with some different meds (it’s currently closed, so the idea is taking a break to get this current chemo out of my system so I can hopefully be ready and qualify once it re opens. I’m still on my scooter and healing from this dumb broken ankle, but after a day of scooting around the hospital yesterday and then the ride back from Texas today, I decided to take advantage of my chemo break and am currently eating sushi in bed and watching trash tv.
