However, the dark days of Punjab found their roots long before Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale came to the fore. The background of Sikh radicalization and the deepening of friction between Hindus and Sikhs Subrata K Mitra in his book โThe Puzzle of Indiaโs Governance Culture, context and comparative theoryโ [Link] suggested that following the defeat in the 1972 elections, Akali Dal shifted its course to a Sikh-based orientation. In 1973, the Anandpur Sahib Resolution was drafted that called for a โradical devolution of power from the centre to the statesโ. There were several aspects of the resolution but the most prominent was a demand for more powers for the state and the classification of Sikhism as a separate religion. Sikhs are counted as part of the Hindu religion along with Buddhists, Jain and others. In 1975, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, the Akali Dal started โSave Democracy Morchaโ. The direct conflict with the centre resulted in the arrest of around 40,000 Sikhs. Later, in the 1977 elections, Anandpur Sahib Resolution did not find its ground and Akali Dal kept on emphasizing the secular regional issues. Meanwhile, there were sections of Sikhs moving forward towards the demand for a separate nation, Khalistan. However, the word Khalistan was still away from becoming โnormalโ in Punjab. In August 1977, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale became head or Jathedar of Damdami Taksal following the death of Jathedar Kartar Singh Khalsa. There is so much someone could say to describe the greatness of Sant Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, yet it would still be a clear understatement. There is so much Baba Ji gave to this world that the whole panth is forever in their debt. I could try my absolute best to list everything that Baba Ji did for the panth but I would most definitely fail. While even writing this right now, I honestly do not even know where to begin telling the life story of such a uchi avaasta Mahapurkh. They were a Pooran Brahimgiaani who were deeply in love with Waheguru and recited their name all day. โข Baba Ji were born in 1915 in the village of Eechogill, which is now part of the Lahore District of Pakistan. He was parents, Baba Bahadur Singh and Mata Prem Kaur Ji were both amritdharis and were deeply religious. They had a large family with 3 other brothers as well as 3 sisters. His parentโs devotion to their religion allowed him to walk the path of Sikhi from a young age. Unlike other kids his age, he would not spend much time playing or talking to others to pass time. Instead, Baba Ji would spend time reciting Bani and practicing the core values of Sikhi. At a young age, Baba Ji started helping his parents with household chores, while consistently reciting Bani throughout the day. When they saw their father reading bani and saw them enter such a bliss state, they asked, โPitta Ji (father), sometimes you enter a different state when reading bani. What is this anand (bliss) you feel?โ His father said that he could not tell him what he felt by mere words. With that response, Baba Ji started doing countless paaths of Japu Ji Sahib before even joining the Damdami Taksal. โข When Baba Bahadur Singh Ji went to go see his gursikh friend, Kehar Singh, he informed him of his sonโs love for Sikhi. Kehar Singh said that he knows Sant Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji of Damdami Taksal, and that they should take his son to him. When the three of them went to Bhindra Kala to see Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindranwale, it was Baba Thakur Singh Jiโs first introduction to Damdami Taksal.

When the time came to leave their body, Bhai Sardool Singh exclaimed that they could see the Panj Pyarey standing in front of him. โLook, thereโs Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mokham Singh, and Bhai Sahib Singhโ. The other Singhs would look, but they could not see anyone standing where Bhai Sardool Singh was indicating. Bhai Sardool Singh Ji then recited full Anand Sahib da Paath and stood up and recited the Ardaas. Upon completion of the Ardaas, they clasped their hands and recited the Gurfateh, โVaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!โ to all the other Singhs in the room and then breathed their last.
