2 mei: H. Athanasius van Alexandrië (ca. 295-373), kerkvader en kerkleraar. Athanasius werd in 328 patriarch van Alexandrië en bestreed het arianisme. Hierom werd hij tot vijf maal toe verbannen. Hij wordt beschouwd als één van de co-auteurs van de geloofsbelijdenis van Nicea, waardoor hij binnen de Koptische Kerk in Egypte geldt als Verdediger van het Geloof. Ook schreef hij als eerste patriarch zowel in het Koptisch als in het Grieks. Hij beschreef de bekendste biografie van de leider van de woestijnvaders, Antonius de Grote (Antonius Abt). Ook was hij de eerste die de 27 boeken van het latere Nieuwe Testament sorteerde. Hij is kerkvader en draagt de eretitels Athanasius de Grote, Vader van de Orthodoxie en Zuil van de Kerk. In 1568 werd hij uitgeroepen tot kerkleraar. As a young man, Athanasius had studied at the feet of ancient desert fathers like Anthony of Egypt and became a respected theologian. At age 19, Athanasius wrote “On the Incarnation,” a profound reflection on the incarnation of Jesus Christ that continues to inspire readers today. At the Council of Nicaea, Athanasius was instrumental in influencing the language used by the Council as it crafted the Nicene Creed. This thorough, creedal summary of the Apostolic faith has remained a uniting statement for all Christians throughout the centuries. Athanasius later became Bishop of Alexandria and was sent into exile five different times when power elite within the church and the Roman Empire refused to accept the teachings of the Council of Nicaea. Because of his stalwart defense of the Apostolic faith, Athanasius has been remembered since his death as a “Pillar of the Church” and as “Athanasius Contra Mundum” (“Athanasius Against the World”), suffering to uphold the faith in a century when the state and even the church leadership sought to undermine it. 🤍 Do you know the story of St. Athanasius (296-373 A.D.)??? He made great progress in both wisdom and virtue, and made a spiritual retreat in the Egyptian desert with St. Anthony the Great. St. Athanasius became the Bishop of Alexandria and served in that role for 46 years. He tirelessly and courageously devoted most of his life to defeating the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. When the majority of his fellow bishops were Arian heretics, which threatened the integrity of the whole Church, Athansius stood firmly and almost single-handedly against their error using his philosophical knowledge, theological wisdom, rhetorical skill, and strength of spirit. Despite having the support of several popes, he suffered great trials, scandals, and persecutions at the hands of his doctrinal enemies, and spent much of his life in exile. He was a participant in the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. and did much of the theological work which supported the condemnation of the Arian heresy and the formulation of the Nicene Creed. St. Athanasius is known as one of the greatest champions of Catholic doctrine to have ever lived, earning the title, "Father of Orthodoxy.". He was later declared a Doctor of the Church! Caravaggio (1571-1610) . ‘The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula’ (1610) . 🎨We are in a dark place with a single light source illuminating the figures. 🎨When our eye moves across from the left we see a man with a deeply lined face and a glinting armour. In his hand is a barely visible bow (p 1,2). 🎨Ursula is transfixed by the arrow in her breast, blood spurting from her wound (p 3). 🎨We see other bystanders. One of them stretches his hand, desperately trying to interject. 🎨Behind Ursula, Caravaggio painted himself as a witness of the bloody scene (p 1,3,4). 🎨According to legend Ursula was a Christian princess who travelled to Cologne with her 10000 virgin followers where the Huns massacred the virgins. Seeing Ursula, the Hun prince wants to marry her and when she refuses, he kills her with an arrow. 🎨This is Caravaggio’s last painting. He painted this in Naples for the Genoese nobleman Marcantonio Doria. 🎨Shortly afterwards he tried to reach Rome in order to obtain a pardon from the pope for the murder he had committed in 1606. But on the route he died of malaria (or was killed by his enemies) in Porto Ercole (see my earlier Caravaggio posts). 🎨Until 1974 this painting was not thought to be by Caravaggio. It was only the discovery of two letters from May 1610 that proved it was Caravaggio’s work (p 5,6). 🎨In the letter Doria’s agent writes that he tried to dry the varnish in the sun which damaged the painting and he would ask Caravaggio’s advice’. This mistake partly explains the poor condition of the painting but Caravaggio’s composition is still powerful and revolutionary. 🎨In order to understand how revolutionary Caravaggio’s realistic depiction was for its time, we just need to compare it with Ludovico Carracci’s highly dramatic 1610 painting of the same subject (p 7, detail). . May 2: Athanasius of Alexandria (297-2 May 373) was a theologian and Patriarch of Alexandria. He was born in Alexandria and had a good education. He caught the attention of Bishop Alexander and began preparing for the priesthood. He was secretary to Alexander, who had become Patriarch. He was well-trained in philosophical thought and he used that in his writings against the Arian heresy of the period. He was Alexander's secretary during the debates on this at the first Council of Nicaea. After Alexander's death, with his blessing, Athanasius was elected Patriarch. He continued to write and act to protect the church from Arianism, and he was a He faced various exiles during his time as Patriarch, forced by multiple different Arian emperors. He traveled widely during these, as far as modern France and Belgium. He made connections with the monks of the Egyptian desert which were fruitful for his life and thought. He wrote the biography of Anthony of the Desert which greatly influenced monastic development. He also wrote a key work on the incarnation of Jesus. We thank God for Athanasius's life and ask the Holy Spirit to form us to be like Jesus, speaking truth and caring for the church amid great cost. #SaintoftheDay St. Athanasius (296-373 A.D.) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to noble Christian parents. He received an excellent education in theology, philosophy, rhetoric, and law, which he directed to the service of God. He made great progress in both wisdom and virtue, and made a spiritual retreat in the Egyptian desert with St. Anthony the Great. St. Athanasius became the Bishop of Alexandria and served in that role for 46 years. He tirelessly and courageously devoted most of his life to defeating the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. When the majority of his fellow bishops were Arian heretics, which threatened the integrity of the whole Church, Athansius stood firmly and almost single-handedly against their error using his philosophical knowledge, theological wisdom, rhetorical skill, and strength of spirit. Despite having the support of several popes, he suffered great trials, scandals, and persecutions at the hands of his doctrinal enemies, and spent much of his life in exile. He was a participant in the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. and did much of the theological work which supported the condemnation of the Arian heresy and the formulation of the Nicene Creed. St. Athanasius is known as one of the greatest champions of Catholic doctrine to have ever lived, earning the title, "Father of Orthodoxy." St. Athanasius was later declared a Doctor of the Church.
