Meet the Fort Collins Trolley volunteers! A motorman is the person who is responsible for the safe operation of the streetcars. The title has always been gender-neutral. The motorman is in charge of operating their trolley–applying power to traction motors–in the same sense as a railroad engineer is in charge of the engine. Fort Collins Trolley Motormen navigate vehicles, pedestrians and bikes along the 1.5 mile route. This is the Westinghouse Electric Corporation motor-generator that converted 2200 volt AC to 600 volt DC current powering the original Fort Collins Municipal Railway. It is on display at @haroldwarppioneervillage. Commutator brushes on the generator drew the DC power from the rotating armature. MONDAY MEMORIES–Upon arrival in Detroit, MI for preservation in @thehenryford Museum, Fort Collins Municipal Railway Car 26 made several runs on the Motor City's Department of Street Railways. This photo was taken on August 6, 1953. MONDAY MEMORIES–On February 24, 1953–two years after the abandonment of the Fort Collins Municipal Railway–enough track remained in place to allow this movement of Car 21 from barn storage to public display next to the Pioneer Museum in Lincoln Park (now Library Park.) City employees Roland Young, William Long and Harold Griffen acted as "pallbearers." The seats on the Trolley are reversible. The Birney Streetcar is designed to drive in either direction so it does not need to make a wide turnaround at the end of the rail line.
