Did you know that British Sign Language (BSL) will be an available course for GCSE starting in the 2025â2026 academic year? Thanks to Daniel Jillings' effort since 2018, BSL will be available as a course for 15- to 16-year old students. The Government proposed this change in 2019, and it is finally in the last stages of the process. Sign Language usually doesn't follow the same grammatical rules as spoken language, and in many countries, they have their own Sign Language. For example, in Spain, they have Spanish Sign Language, but they also have distinct sign languages for the Catalan, Valencian, Galician and Basque regions. "So Olivia, how would you describe your trip to India with De Montfort University?" I absolutely loved going to India. Fitting hearing aids to those that canât afford them and reconnecting them, helping communication and connections with their familyâwas the most rewarding thing I have ever done. It was a huge team effort as we saw around 50 patients a day, days were long and sometimes quite tough but I definitely wouldnât change it. I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to go there and immerse myself in all the culture. Iâve tried authentic Indian food, been to temples and celebrated Navratri with the people who were kind enough to open their homes to us while we were there. I couldnât describe my experience in words, it has changed my outlook not only on audiology but also on life and how lucky we are to have what we have. St Oswald's Church is a special space for the community in Bollington. The building is beautiful and historical, welcoming and flexible. Modern audio-visual equipment would increase its accessibility to the community and enhance services and events especially with the schools and young people. But there is another very caring and loving need for AV equipment in St Oswald's, because anyone in Bollington can turn to St Oswald's to hold a funeral and increasingly bereaved families want to show precious videos and photos of their loved ones. It is so sad that they cannot do this when the technology exists. Audio visual equipment would enable this small comfort at their time of grief. St Oswald's belongs to the people of Bollington and is funded by the people of Bollington, so anything given to St Oswald's is a loving gift for the community. As Bollington Hearing Centre is in the heart of Bollington our job is to ensure people can communicate. We want to help raise much needed funds so that anyone accessing the service at St Oswald's can hear as well as see what is being featured and to minimise costs to families holding services such a funerals and celebrations by not having to hire in equipment each time to support the event. We will be setting off very early on the 22nd September to do a Sunrise Walk up Snowdon. Bollington Hearing Centre and another Bollington business, Treks to the Wrecks, who will be guiding the trek, will set off at 4am to walk up Snowden to reach the summit in time for the sunrise.
