Last night we hosted a special event at the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) to meet our special guest, and Ulysses Trust ambassador, Ray Mears. Following introductions from the HAC's Major General Simon Lalor and our CEO Polly Marsh DL, cadets Lance Corporal Tia Smythe and Cadet Honneki Samman Perrucha from the City of London Academy CCF took to the stage. They spoke warmly to the audience about what being a cadet means to them and the difference it is making to their lives as well as the benefits of Adventurous Training. The cadets were followed by a fascinating interview with world renowned bushcraft and survival expert Ray Mears who was interviewed by Langley Sharp MBE After these fantastic presentations and the fascinating interview with Ray, there was an opportunity for our guests to mingle and chat with each other and our speakers. This week is #mentalhealthawareness week, and we're keen to highlight the benefits of Adventurous Training and expeditions on mental health. Our recent Social Value survey backs this up with cadet units reporting 100% postive impact on mental health and wellbeing. As well as the data, many of our post expedition reports reveal how the experience has helped young cadets with their mental health. We’ve won an award! This morning, the Royal Geographical Society has announced its 2024 medal and award recipients and we are pleased to report that The Ulysses Trust will receive the Geographical Award. On hearing the news our CEO Polly Marsh said, “The whole team here at The Ulysses Trust are thrilled and honoured to receive ‘The Geographical Award 2024’. For over 30 years, the Trust has ensured that expeditions are within the financial reach of all members of our young cadet and reserve communities – resulting in huge social value and a positive impact on individuals, our communities and our natural world. Ulysses Trust ambassador, Jordan Wylie MBE is undertaking an amazing challenge called Tower Power 2024 - it's a journey which has sustainiability at its core. Jordan has completed stage 1 by cycling from The Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Eiffel Tower - (2 of the 3 towers) on a bike made of wood! Jordan managed to squeeze in one of our flags into his rucksack and take these fantastic photos! #thankyou Jordan! Your challenge will hopefully inspire cadets, OCdts and reservists to undertaken their own adventures with sustainability at their heart. Next Jordan will cross the English Channel. Instead of using the ferry or train, Jordan has opted for a sustainable canoe/kayak! On reaching our shores he will carry on cycling to tower #3 the most famous of all - Blackpool! We’ve recruited several new ambassadors recently and the final new recruit to join our team is Jordan Wylie MBE. Jordan is very well known in the world of Army Cadets so we are delighted that he has accepted our invitation to become an ambassador for The Ulysses Trust. Jordan said, ‘‘I am very proud to have been invited to be an ambassador for The Ulysses Trust, we share the same values and passion with our common goal of providing opportunities and inspiration to young people through adventure and the great outdoors. Not only do these challenges develop teamwork and leadership skills, they are vital in supporting mental health, boosting confidence and resilience, and provide a huge sense of achievement to those who need it most." A bit of background about Jordan. He is an award-winning adventurer, international bestselling author and one of the stars of Channel 4’s BAFTA nominated shows Hunted and Celebrity Hunted. The former frontline soldier has been a national ambassador for the Army Cadets since 2018 and is passionate about using his public profile to inspire the next generation. Jordan holds multiple official world records and world firsts, but his best known for some of his more extreme challenges, such as climbing Kilimanjaro completely barefoot, rowing across the most dangerous stretch of water on the planet and also being a member of the exclusive 7 continents marathon club. Jordan has had one of the most diverse career paths from growing up on a Blackpool council estate to fighting modern day pirates and working on Hollywood films, these days he can often be found at a racecourse with his Racing Club partners, as the current holders of the prestigious Grand Military and Royal Artillery Gold Cups! We are thrilled to welcome another new recruit to The Ulysses Trust. Wendy Searle is a polar adventurer and expedition guide and has accepted our invitation to become a Trust Ambassador. Wendy said, "I'm so excited to be working with The Ulysses Trust and more especially in the role of ambassador for diversity and inclusion. There is room for everyone in the adventure world, and it needs to be more representative. I didn't know when I went on a 1,000km solo journey to the South Pole, that expeditions could be so empowering, or so life-changing. I am looking forward to encouraging many more people to discover the benefits of adventure through the Ulysses Trust." Wendy is also a mother to four children. In 2020, Wendy became only the seventh woman in history to ski solo, unsupported from the coastline of Antarctica to the geographic South Pole. Relatively new to the adventure world, Wendy set out to show that someone ordinary can take on the extraordinary. As a woman, and as a mother, she went on to prove that it's never too late to take on ambitious goals. Since her major solo expedition, Wendy has been sharing the lessons of her life-changing journey, and hopes to inspire a more diverse community in the adventure world. We are delighted to welcome another new recruit to The Ulysses Trust. Louis Rudd MBE is a record-breaking polar adventurer, expedition leader, former Royal Marine Commando and SAS soldier, with 34 years of service. He is the first – and only – person to have traversed Antarctica twice using human power alone, has reached the South Pole four times from different coastal start points and summited Antarctica’s highest mountain. He is a member of the exclusive Explorers Club, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, an Ambassador for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Director of Expeditions for Shackleton, a Published Author and accomplished Public Speaker. Louis said, “It is an absolute privilege to be asked to be an Ambassador for the wonderful Ulysses Trust. In 2015, they supported an expedition I led with Reserve Forces soldiers to ski 1,100 miles across Antarctica. 🪖 CCF Biennial Inspection... Last Friday was a big day at Taunton School as we had our Combined Cadet Force (Army and Royal Navy) Biennial Inspection. We are thrilled to report that it ran without a hitch! Our CCF students worked extremely hard to ensure the inspection ran smoothly and efficiently, putting their training into practice. From crossing the Antarctic to climbing mountains in the Dolomites we support female Reservists and cadets to take on life changing expeditions in the UK and overseas. Norfolk ACF today hosted a familiarisation day at our Dereham HQ for new potential instructors. The participants at this stage have completed their paperwork and DBS and have now started the formal potential instructor journey from CIVVIE to Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer. Yesterday, Rosa, Molly, Lizzie, Ben, Aiden, and Freddie in Middle Fifth, were extremely lucky with weather conditions for their flying trip to Boscombe Down (military Camp). The cadets flew with a RAF instructor pilot in a Grob G 115 for 45 minutes each, and once they were content were also given the controls themselves to fly. Most of them experienced loop the loops, barrel rolls and generally being upside-down in a plane. Amazingly beautiful landscape and wonderful people, experienced from ground level trekking through the mountains and villages, together with the chaos, character and history of Kathmandu. Doing so with the tight knit team from MAS(A) was really special. 13 of us. That’s about 25% of our total strength. Of that we were about a third each Nepali / British / F&C. It was a festival of cross-cultural understanding and conversation, when we had enough oxygen in our lungs." “I come from a less fortunate family, and we’ve never had a lot of money for holidays and practicing sports we liked, but when the opportunity came for a trip to Italy for low cost to do one of my favourite sports I couldn’t pass it up. I was very nervous to even leave the country without my family and especially to fly for the first time but it was such an incredible experience. I threw myself into every challenge and disregarded all my worry, it made me think I was invincible. I was so proud of myself and what I had been doing and I was amazed that I had the physical and emotional strength to fight through some of the biggest heights I’d ever climbed in such temperatures and altitudes. I learned a ton of new skills like the correct way to belay and multi-pitch climb and even how to lead climb. “I think fundraising for the trip was really important as it made all the cadets take on more responsibility and required our active involvement in activities or communication that we would otherwise not be used to. The huge benefits of our fundraising were obvious to us during the trip and allowed us to have amazing experiences such as enjoyable activities and meals. The trip is important to me as I know the memories will last a lifetime and not many opportunities like this will come around again. The trip pushed me both mentally and physically from day one and has allowed for the development of the whole team both individually and as a group. Kent Wing’s RAF Tunbridge Wells Air Cadets - 129 Sqn has been awarded the prestigious Shackleton Trophy for its ‘Pedal Overlord’ cycling expedition to the Normandy D-day beaches (supported by The Ulysses Trust and Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises). In May 2023, 129 Squadron’s Pedal Overlord expedition took 16 cadets aged 13-17, supported by 5 squadron staff members, on a fast-paced 200km bike ride over 3 days. Leaving vehicles behind at Portsmouth and riding bikes onto the ferry, the route took the cadets along the D-day beaches with full expedition kit. All participants gained an understanding and appreciation of the scale of Operation Overlord back in 1944. Squadron commanding officer and expedition leader Flt Lt JC Vousden said, “This was a strenuous expedition for cadets who showed great determination to complete the challenge. We’re delighted to have been awarded The Shackleton Trophy and intend to compete for it again in future years.” Corporal Kian Hepden (Expedition member) said, “One of the best experiences that cadets has ever provided, this opportunity was once in a lifetime, and I would love to do it again.” The coveted Shackleton Trophy is awarded annually to the Air Training Corps (ATC) expedition judged to be the most successful, imaginative, and adventurous. The award was created by Jim Crail, a previous Chairman of the Shackleton Association. He thought to link the quality of endurance implicit in the Shackleton aircraft’s name with that demanded from each ATC expedition and representing the Corps motto ‘Venture Adventure’. The Ulysses Trust wish to thank the generosity of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust for supporting this expedition. Last week South East RFCA hosted a prestigious event where one of our expedition awards was presented. Each year The Ulysses Trust nominates a unit for the accolade of 'The Best Cadet Expedition'. The 2022 award was presented to Mr Neil Pouney from UTC Reading CCF for Ex ROUND THE ISLAND at His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of The Royal County of Berkshire Awards held at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Ex ROUND THE ISLAND took place in 2022 when ten students and two teachers completed the Round The Island yacht race around the Isle of Wight in an expedition that stands out for its many months of organising and training, including a training week in March and an additional day in May in Brighton. The training week in March saw the students undergo learning new skills in sub-zero temperatures, being thrashed by the wind and snow and yet demonstrating their physical robustness, being able to learn and perform new tasks despite the conditions, one cadet summed the challenge up nicely by saying it was ‘scary, but thrilling at the same time’. The skills learnt weren’t all nautical however, with the students encouraged to plan meals and go shopping for the food they would need for the sail. The students were further tested, working 12 hours days with skills that were still new to them, demonstrating resilience and teamwork to achieve a very impressive result of 634th out of 1156 boats. Importantly, the impression that this expedition has made on the cadets that were there will stay with them for a lifetime and will hopefully encourage more like it in the future.
