It was a good day to get some creatures out on grass! 🐂🐃Turned the first of the pairs out on pasture this afternoon. It's always one of the best days of the year. Watching the big mommas cows getting yippee-skippy excited to be out again. Then, watching them double-back, remembering that they have babies left behind in the lot. 😅 They go back and forth for a little while, and eventually, everyone figures it out. After the kids got home, we got the broilers out into the chicken tractor for the first time. It's cramped quarters for this size of group, but I have ambitions to get a bigger model in service soon. Calf #23 - Mama Maddy had this pretty heifer calf in the early morning hours this week and of All the calves we’ve ever had this little heifer is the Fastest calf we ever had! She runs at greyhound speeds across the pasture when we try to get close to her. We have had to sneak up on her while she’s sleeping each time to give her vitamins and vaccinations and get her name tag on and her newborn pics before she knows what’s going on. I almost named her Meatloaf (she needed a “M” name) because she takes off like a Bat Out Of Hell 😂 but I couldn’t do that to her so I settled on MacKenzie. Whew, that was a busy one! With me out of action for most of the weekend, David has been working all on his own (amazingly and thanks so much for looking after me!) but everything's done and the cows are happy. We picked up and welcomed Houghton, our new pedigree Lincoln Red Bull to the farm. He's settled in really well so far. All our cows and Houghton had their feet checked and trimmed by @mathewjames3055 We have their hoofs trimmed twice a year to help keep their feet healthy, preventing and reducing lameness. Yet again, we haven't had any serious issues, one with two overgrown hoofs, the bull had a stone in his that was removed and just a good all-around tidy up of the others. The cows and calves have been sorted today into two groups, one who will be kept on and served by the bull and the second have been turned out in different field as we have decided to reduce the number of cows we calf due to our time, commitment, and continuing rising costs of farming. It was a tough decision to make, as this winter, we are really proud to have calved thirteen shapely and muscular calves. We haven't had calves like this here at Tirypant for a couple of years. A couple of early calves from a pair of heifers, both are 21-year drops, one missed joining last year and the other was too young being a December calve. Well, the "mamas to be" were moved to their calving home back on Sunday and although it's not where I had planned on calving them, it's where we have water! Considering we hauled water to the bovines in this field last Fall, I feel like having a full dugout now, was like hitting the jackpot as many of our dugouts remain extremely low or dry. The feed wagon will continue to roll for another month or so and the girls get to pick at last year's spring seeded Fall Rye that was grazed last fall. Well, what a busy hour we've just had. Quick check in the cow shed to make sure all was ok and to see if there was any sign of the two overdue calves appearing...and to our surprise, both cows were showing signs of being in labour. Happily, bith calves have arrived safe and well, both needed a little helping hand to arrive, but both are now doing well. The arrival of these two calves brings our long calving 2024 season to an end. Overall, we've had a very good calving seasons and are really impressed with how Oreos (our BlobdeBull Sire) offsprings are growing and developing. We had the setback of Bouncy falling ill and losing her calf. However, she's made a full recovery and is enjoying life back in the herd. We did get a new baby this evening!!! Big baby bull!! His wobbly new legs were having issues figuring out how to step up out of the gopher hole he stopped into, but he got out! Spring has SPRUNG in so many ways at the farm! Besides the beautiful, bright green of the grasses coming up, we have our first flowers pop up, first calves of the season… (and they are TWINS! 👯) wild turkeys roaming around our backyard, and even spotted a bald eagle 🦅 outside our window. My morning shown in pictures. If you’ve been following my stories (saved in calving season highlight) this will be an update for you. A quick synopsis: calf in barn with mamma with big teets seems to be getting milk, we aren’t sure it’s enough, more to come on them. Took water to the cow in the pasture that had calving paralysis and couldn’t get up. Good news, she is still wobbly but getting up! We take her water so she doesn’t have to go all the way to the water trough. She also has hobbles on her back legs to keep her from injuring herself while she heals. Made a bottle for the cow aboves calf that’s in the shop. He has something wrong with his “passenger front” as Kyle calls it. He can’t put weight on his front leg. Why? We aren’t sure! Possible dislocated shoulder? Vet gave him a steroid to help with inflammation. All we can do now is wait and see. He might be ok and he might not. That’s the hard thing about farming. The next day I had a 1/2 sister born! Her mom is older, knows what she’s doing, and is kind of bossy so she never went in the pen.
