The Bicycle Club 808 Jules Verne Playing Cards printed the United States Playing Card Company (@bicyclecards) in a Carat X1 Single Deck Display. . The Bicycle Jules Verne deck was released in 2014 via USPCC’s awesome, but short-lived, VIP club, CLUB 808. CLUB 808, launched Jan 1, 2013, gave members a “back stage pass” to exclusive content and limited-edition playing cards only available to club members, like the Jules Verne deck. Like most, if not all CLUB 808 decks, the Jules Verne deck is fully custom (except the numbered cards). The tuckbox imitates a leather book with the left side representing the book spine and the right side, the book pages marked with a ribbon. The back design, which is also the back of the tuck box, pays homage to the Hetzel (Verne’s Editor and Publisher) covers for the ‘Voyages Extraordinaires’ novels/short stories, but is modified to represent the four novels depicted in the deck; From the Earth to the Moon, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth & Around the World in 80 Days. The custom courts represent characters/vehicles from the stories. It is unfortunate that CLUB 808 was discontinued as many awesome decks were produced during its short lifespan, but hopefully @bicyclecards will bring it, or something similar to it, back soon!

The Kleos Playing Cards produced by @kardeck.cards and printed by @legendsplayingcardco with a Kleos Coin in a Carat X2 Double Deck Case with a Carat CI2-51 Coin Insert. Kleos Playing Cards is a futuristic Greek Mythology deck that comes in two editions (Nyx and Eos), each with a standard and gilded version, for a total of four decks. The Nyx edition, representing the more ominous side of the Greek God’s power, has a black, orange and sky blue color scheme while the Eos edition, representing the grace and wisdom of the gods has a white, diamond blue and gold color scheme. Each tuck box features detailed 3D embossing and vibrant foils and are sealed with numbered custom foil seals. Black Artisan Playing Cards in a special John Wick deck wrap produced by Theory 11 (@theory11) and printed by the United States Playing Card Company (@officialbicyclecards) with an underworld gold coin from the @lionsgate shop in a Carat X1 Single Deck Case with Carat CI1-39 Coin Insert. Black Artisan Playing Cards, designed by South African Designer Simon Frouws, were released in November 2012 and is one of T11’s most popular decks. Last year, they were featured in John Wick: Chapter when Killa (German Mob Boss associated with the High Table) used them in a game of poker that he made John Wick, Caine, and Mr. Nobody play in order to decide who would kill John and claim his bounty. Prior to the release of the movie, Walmart offered an exclusive box set of the first 3 John Wick films packed with a Black Artisan deck inside an exclusive John Wick deck wrap. The gold coin is used in the underworld to pay debts or ask for favors. On one side, a lion stands with a shield emblazoned with the sun and the phrase, ‘Ens Causa Sui’ (Something generated within itself) and the Roman numerals MMI (2001). The reverse portrays a person with a shield emblazoned with a cross, embellished with laurel, and the phrase ‘Ex Unitae Vires’ (Out of unity comes strength). The five variants of the Eye of the Ocean Playing Cards and coin designed by Lorenzo Gaggiotti of @stockholm17 and printed by @cartamundicards in a Carat X5 Five Deck Case with Carat CI1-38 Coin Insert. The Eye of the Ocean (EOTO) playing cards were released as part of a Kickstarter Campaign which also featured a novel and a puzzle. The EOTO novel is part one of an archaeo-fantasy adventure set during the age of wooden sailing ships and takes place in Europe and on the Atlantic Ocean in 1776. Follow the crew of Cpt. Solveig Hellström as they search for the mysterious Eye of the Ocean: an ancient sailing island and guardian of the seven seas. The playing cards came in three main variants; Solis (ocean blue and gold), Lunae (teal and silver) and Astra Polaris (black and gold with antique gold gilded edges). The tuck boxes have special cutouts, which reveal parts of the decks inside as well as a long flap closure that tucks into the back of the box. All decks share the same custom artwork (back design, courts, number cards and aces) and when laid out correctly, the background of each card forms a map, which is used for the puzzle. The Quartermaster deck (beige) was printed pre-series (2020) in a limited quantity (300 numbered and signed decks), 110 of which were used as rewards for Lorenzo’s 2020 Patreons and 180 were made available for the Kickstarter campaign with a small reserve for shipping issues and as prizes for the puzzle. The deck was not wrapped in cellophane, but was sealed with a S17 golden XVII sigil foil sticker. EOTO Intrepid (red and gold) was not part of the Kickstarter campaign and was designed for Lorenzo’s 2021 Patreons as a limited variant (333) with a numbered seal and printed edges. A standard variant (no numbered seal or edge printing) was also released on Lorenzo’s website. The EOTO coin is a little over 38mm in diameter and is gold on one side (image of sun) and silver on the other (image of quarter moon). Fantasma Playing Cards and Coin by Giovanni Meroni of Thirdway Industries (@thirdway_industries), printed by the United States Playing Card Company (@bicyclecards) and WJPC (@wangjingplayingcards) in a Carat X3 Triple Deck Case with a Carat CI1-51 Coin Insert (to be released soon). Fantasma was an experimental project that was inspired by Ghosts and thus, the majority of Fantasma’s art is ephemeral—phasing in or out of the visible spectrum depending on the lighting. This is the first time a Thirdway Industries deck was printed almost entirely with invisible ink. The court cards are fully custom but invisible under normal light and only can been seen when revealed by blacklight. The indexes are printed with neon ink, which is visible under normal light, but under blacklight, becomes even more vibrant. The two main decks are Fantasma Spirit and Fantasma Tomb, which share the same cards (printed by USPCC), but are housed in two different tuck boxes (printed by @boschiero_newton). Spirit has an embossed and holo-foiled sleeve that features a skull-shaped cutout, which reveals the neon skull on the tuck box housed inside. Upon removing the sleeve, we find a relatively blank tuck, apart from the orange neon (winged) skull on the front and small skulls on the sides and back. Like the cards inside, this seemingly blank tuck is only so under normal light, and under black light, a much more intricate design is revealed. Tomb is a much more traditional tuck box, but made like only B&N can with detailed embossing and two layers of intricate foil (black and iridescent bluish-green) on premium black stock. The third deck in the series, Fantasma Duplex, was a limited Kickstarter Exclusive edition and was printed by WJPC with two different colors of invisible ink. It also features azure foil backs as well as azure gilding. Duplex includes four spectral Jokers which display both ”invisible“ colors on the same card. If you missed the Kickstarter campaign, you can still get Spirit and Tomb on the Thirdway web store and Gio will be launching a follow-up campaign, Fantasma Extreme, soon.

The Tales of Mischief Custom Carat X4B Four Deck Case, available EXCLUSIVELY to Patreon’s (@patreon) of Jack Brutus Penny (@jackbrutuspenny) via the Tales of Mischief Kickstarter (@kickstarter) campaign currently running until Feb 14, 2024. Tails of Mischief, printed by Legends (@legendsplayingcardco), is a limited-edition, full-bleed, art poker playing card deck that uses the canvas to tell a story. Inspired by Japanese ukiyoe wood-block printing, historical culture as well as Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, it tells the story of four mischiefs of mice, all of which approach nature from a different perspective. There are four versions of the Tales of Mischief decks: The Whey of the Woods, The Whey of the House, The Whey of the Fields, and The Whey of the Islands, and each deck has its own custom tuck box and custom back. The faces depict the same scene, but from each mischief's differing perspective, with different seasonal details, special court coloring, and completely unique tens and jokers. The Tales of Mischief Carat X4B was specially designed to display the 4-deck set, with the lid left blank to reveal the scene of a delicatessen-trading house on the sides of the tucks when all four decks are placed together. The other three sides of the case are delicately engraved with artwork emblematic of each mischief and used on the interior of the tuck boxes, with small adorably whimsical details added, such as a ladybird here and a field mouse rake there. Even the edges of the lid are engraved to create a seamless look. One side of the case is designed with a large central circle that lines up with and highlights the laser cutting of the tuck box. The Tales of Mischief Carat X4B case is only 32USD, but as mentioned previously, it is only available to Jack’s Patreons via the Tales of Mischief KS Campaign. Not a Patreon? UNBROKEN Ocean Horizon and Nebulous Dreams produced by Seasons Playing Cards (@seasonsplayingcards) and printed by MPC (@makeplayingcards), in a custom Carat X2 Double Deck Case made for Shogun Playing Cards (@shogunplayingcards). The UNBROKEN series was inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the pieces with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Kintsugi is inextricably linked to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which teaches one to see the beauty in imperfection, appreciate simplicity and accept the transient nature of things. It reminds us that all things, including us, and life itself, are impermanent, incomplete, and imperfect. UNBROKEN was released at the end of 2021 and celebrates each and every individual that we have been crafted into through our experiences. And as each person is different, so are the 250 decks in the UNBROKEN series. Each deck features a unique tuck box pattern (representing the context of life) with a unique foiled mending pattern (representing the individual experiences that we each face) and a complimenting glaze or matte finish (giving further identity to each individual design), sealed with an “Experimental 1 of 1” sticker. The deck inside features one of three different back designs, with two designs having two different colored backs, making a total of five different backs. All of the designs are patterns consisting of the Seasons’ Lotus Flower Logo, which when flipped through, show the logo flowering and closing. The AoS features a “broken” wall with a hole in the shape of a spade and the card back pattern showing through the hole. The two Jokers are similar to each other, one with a missing piece from the top left corner with the text ‘oker’ and the second with the piece repaired and the repair lacquer in the shape of a ‘J’ to complete the word ‘Joker’. 10 YEARS OF GREATNESS! The Annual 52Plus Joker Club Decks from the last 10 years, designed by the best playing card artists of modern times and printed by the Expert Playing Card Company (@expertpcc) in the prototype case especially made for the 52Plus Joker Club (@52plusjoker) to commemorate the 10 Year Anniversary of Club Decks. The base of the prototype is made up of 5mm thick black and the lid is a 5mm clear acrylic plate attached by ten 3mm diameter neodymium magnets. Because the decks are of varying sizes, special inserts with cutouts were created specifically to fit each year’s deck. The bottom insert is a black 5mm insert with a cutout for the 2014 deck by Jackson Robinson (@kingswildproject), which is larger and thicker than the other decks. On top of the black insert, there is a 10mm thick clear insert with cutouts for each year’s deck and the corresponding year and artist engraved underneath. After receiving and testing out the prototype, the following improvements were made for the production units: • Used 10mm (instead of 5mm) thick black acrylic for the sides to provide a more substantial frame for the decks • Used 5mm (instead of 3mm) diameter neodymium magnets for a stronger, firmer hold • Increased the internal depth by 5mm to provide more space for the decks and on top of the original black insert, added an additional 5mm black insert with a cutout for both Jackson’s deck and the 2021 Club Deck by Lorenzo Gaggiotti (@stockholm17), which is also thicker than the other decks, though not as thick as Jackson’s. Unfortunately, I personally don’t have an actual production unit and thus can’t show you pictures of it of how it turned out, but it is a nice, solid case. In total, there were of 45 production cases made, 5 of which were numbered (1 of 5 to 5 of 5) and reserved for the Club’s use. Of the remaining 40, 10 were sold at the Cleveland Convention in October and the remaining 30 were made available to members as a very special price via the Club website last month. As of this posting, there are only 10 left.

The Nazo Nazo Playing Cards, designed by Jack Brutus Penny (@jack_brutus_penny), produced by Portfolio52 (@portfolio_52) and printed by the Expert Playing Card Company (@expertpcc) in the custom designed Nazo Nazo Carat X6 Half Brick Box and inserts. The Nazo Nazo Playing Cards feature whimsical hand-illustrated art depicting anthropomorphized animals integrated into a large-scale puzzle mural. Visual word puns, stories, and scavenger hunts are scattered throughout the four different variants of the deck; Guest House, Tatami, Gold Gilded Onsen and Black Gilded Night Garden (Onsen and Night Garden were Kickstarter exclusive decks). Each variant has its own unique, fully illustrated tuck box (both interior and exterior) and card back as well as a different color scheme. There are also various ‘Easter Eggs’ specific to each deck hidden throughout the artwork that will keep you entertained for hours searching them out. Every card is fully illustrated with a character living in their own world and connected together they form a giant mural of the full view of activities inside the Nazo Nazo guest house. By placing together one of each of the Guest House, Tatami and Onsen, you create half a building. With two sets together, you create the full effect of the Nazo Nazo Guest House, allowing you to walk seamlessly around the entirety of the house from the entrance, around the side and to back garden entrance. The Nazo Nazo X6 case was made to house the 6 decks that make up the Nazo Nazo Guest House with various inhabitants going about their day-to-day engraved on 2 sides. Unfortunately, it was only discovered after the campaign was fulfilled, that the case was made slightly too wide and the decks don’t align with the engravings as they are supposed to. In order to remedy this, special inserts are being made, with additional artwork by Jack, to fill in the extra spaces and align the decks properly. Pictured are the prototypes of the inserts that are being produced and how the case looks before and after they are utilized. Once they are complete, they will be shipped to Portfolio52 for sorting and shipping to all the backers of the cases.
Introducing the Carat WSC single card display, soon to be released through Murphy’s Magic (@murphysmagic) resellers. The solid beech WSC has a cutout for your favorite playing card and a 1mm acrylic plate to keep it covered it up while still allowing it to be seen. The WSC’s design allows you to display your card standing up or lying down, depending on your available space and preference. It’s dimensions are 10.3 x 7.8 x 2.5cm and it weights approx. 112g or 4oz. The cards featured are from 2 of the artists that have impact on me since I started collecting playing cards 10 years ago, Brendan Hong (@thebrendanhong) and Lorenzo Gaggiotti (@stockholm17). I became interested in playing cards at the end of 2013 when I backed the Emperor Playing Cards by Joanne Lin on Kickstarter(KS) and soon after Dia De Los Muertos v1 by the Edgy Brothers in early 2014. But it was Brendan’s Hive v1 decks and the hunt for them that really got me into collecting. Hive v1 Playing Cards was an independent release exclusively available from @kingswildproject via pre-sale and by the time I found out about them, the pre-sale was over. I hunted for them for months (which is part of the thrill of collecting for me), but could not find them anywhere nor could I find anyone that wanted to part with theirs. I finally got a lucky break when someone gave me Brendan’s (private) contact info and I reached out to him out of the blue to pester him for some decks. Despite my intrusion, Brendan was so kind and gracious with me and we actually ended up getting along quite well. The second card is a signed JoC from Lorenzo Gaggiotti’s No 17 Playing Cards, which was a KS project in early 2015. This was the first playing card project that I got crazy with and went all out because it was so, as Henry C would say, ‘Brickworthy’. This signed card was one of the little extras that were in my rewards package from the project. Since then, I have been privileged enough to be able to work with Lorenzo on numerous of his projects Both are very good people and I am honored to know them personally.
