My parents were an interesting, well-travelled couple for whom the expression ‘carpe diem’ might have been a guiding principle. Dad, in particular, was a martyr to his desire for novelty and his determination to avoid the daily grind of the 9-5. In consequence perhaps, money ebbed more often than it flowed. They were frequently more impecunious than appearances might suggest and bad debt followed them like a malodorous spectre skulking around the edges of our lives. The result was a nomadic, somewhat bohemian, family life of mixed fortunes for myself and my siblings. Among the many places we lived, there were several special properties; formerly grand, but run-down, and needing work. Mum and Dad worked on the theory that our homes could double up as their livelihood. Living this way meant there would often be times without electricity, running water or heat, lots of rubble, debris and dust, and a requirement to develop a tolerance for sharing our interior spaces with rodents and other wildlife. On the flip side, our family was lucky enough to live in some remarkable houses.
