We’ve touched down in Gqeberha and here’s our first look at the beefed-up version of the Hilux GR-S. Dubbed the Hilux GRS III, the updated model introduces a wide-body kit for a meaner and wider stance with matching 17-inch wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres. Other highlights include a revised grille with ‘TOYOTA’ lettering as well as a skid plate, rock rails and red rear recovery points at the rear. Climbing inside, not much has changed apart from the newly added JBL sound system. Some highlights include GR Sport branding throughout the interior and leather/alcantara combination seats, It’s still powered by a 2.8L four-cylinder turbodiesel GD-6 engine making 165kW/550Nm and is paired with a 6-speed auto transmission. The GR-S has a Part-Time 4WD system and a suspension system that makes use of KYB monotube shock absorbers. We think the exterior is striking as it seamlessly follows Honda’s current design language with a dominant grille, small profile LED head and taillights and overall proportions that won’t make you twitch. The interior is Honda business as usual, with a mixture of good materials, tactile buttons and touch, a tilted wireless charger and comfortable leather seats. Although our @toastedice did not take Pure Maths at school, it did not take him to learn that the VW Polo GTI offers some of the most affordable pocket rocket power out there. R554,000 retail price ÷ 147 kW of power = R3 768 per kW. No need to lay-buy. The numbers kept on impressing us, including the feisty 2-litre turbocharged engine paired with a 6-speed DSG transmission, family-friendly 305 litres of boot space and a 15mm lower suspension providing a sporty drive. Surprisingly, when driven conservatively in Eco or Comfort mode, the hot hatch returned a fuel consumption of about 7.5 l/100km, which makes it perfect as a daily commuter. Today we woke up bright and early for a short cruise in a Suzuki-powered leisure boat before we headed to the Simola Hillclimb where vintage old-timers are racing up the hill, competing for glory on Classic Car Friday! Currently, Franco Scribante has the best time of 42.143 seconds with a best speed of 162 km/h. Here’s a look at the three stock, standard Suzuki Swift Sports which will be racing up the world renowned Simola Hillclimb. We’re still in China, being graciously hosted by Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo. We’ve had the opportunity to test out various Jaecoo and Omoda models destined for South Africa. Among them, the flagship Jaecoo J8, set to debut later this year, particularly captured our attention. Although we only saw it in left-hand drive, the J8 boasts impressive features including 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, dual 12.3-inch displays (for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system), a dual-zone climate control system with rear vents and controls, and a head-up display. It’s undeniably a stunning car. Under the hood, the J8 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 183 kW and 385 Nm of torque. We are bidding farewell to the Ford Ranger Wildtrak X. The cosmetic enhancements on the Wildtrak X may be minimal but they are visually appealing to set it apart from its younger sibling. The cabin is class leading and the addition of the Bang & Olufsen sound system takes things up a notch. The Flexible Rack System is easy to use without the requirement of two people to slide it to a desired setting. The ride and drive of the Wildtrak X remains relatively the same even with the upgraded suspension and all-terrain tyres. The 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor provides sufficient power to pull the 2.4 tonne bakkie without much fuss. Today we welcome the epitome of luxury EV in the Merc stable, the EQS 450 4Matic SUV, a marvel that seamlessly blends cutting-edge technology with modern elegance. The technology is encompassed by Merc’s latest MBUX, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Driver aids include lane keep assist, key-less start and entry, voice commands and a plethora more. Power and torque comes from two electric motors developing 265kW and 800 Nm. It also has a 108.4 kWh battery pack that offers a range of up to a claimed 616kms. On the second and final day, we downgraded from the Seltos GT-Line to the entry-level LX grade. Looks-wise, the Seltos LX isn’t as glitzy and eye-catching as the top-spec GT-Line, but the upgrades do standout, especially at the rear. The cabin also misses out on desirable features like large screens, leather seats and a panoramic sunroof found in higher spec model derivatives. That said, customers who have a tight budget won’t be disappointed by the cloth seats and smaller screens. Underneath the bonnet of the Seltos LX is a 1.5L turbodiesel engine making 85kW and 250Nm. Its power output might sound small but it doesn’t feel underpowered thanks to ample torque. The pre-facelift Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max came with its positives and negatives, but the Chinese manufacturer has addressed some issues that have made the facelift model more enjoyable to pilot. In the looks department, Chery has that covered, our Bokke Green looking color garnered quite some attention. The updated cabin is that more enjoyable to be in, we just wish the climate control panel was facing upwards for easier navigation. Overall, it’s a great interior with plenty of space and the use of high quality materials. Initially the Tiggo 8 Pro Max came with high fuel consumption figures from the get go, but Chery seems to have fixed that issue. We managed to average 7.8 L/100km during our stint, with the lowest being 6.2 L/100km. I spy with my little eye a sporty-coupe shape, R-line Styling and the perfect family holiday steed: the VW Taigo. Over a 1000km trip from Jozi to Mpumalanga, the 85kW/200Nm, 1-litre Taigo returned impressive 5.9l/km fuel consumption figures, only surpassed by the silky smooth steering feel. The compact crossover SUV’s easy-to- use 8-inch infotainment kept up with varying device inputs and the his-and-hers climate control kept the peace. The only concerns were the reduced rear space for taller passengers, due to the sloping roofline, and a driver’s seat that could be more comfortable for longer drives. We’ve spent some time in the Jaecoo J7 and we must say we’re quite impressed. It’s a looker and garnered quite the stares from onlookers. The entry-level Vortex has smaller wheels, but they still look great. Inside is quite solid, and looks great thanks to the use of high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The 14.8 touchscreen is something else and makes the Apple Car/Android experience quite pleasant. That said, it’s quite a fingerprint magnet. Driving the Jaecoo is quite pleasant. Yesterday we hopped out of the BMW X2 M35i xDrive and straight into the sDrive18i. in terms of aesthetics, it looks good thanks to standard M Sport package and standard 19-inch wheels. As good as the exterior looks, the interior follows suit. Sports seats, M Sport steering and the new curved display are part of the package. It’s a nice place to be, but the rear window is quite small and hinders vision a bit. The three-cylinder engine with 115 kW/ 230Nm pulls along quite briskly, and the 7-speed automatic ensures seamless shifts as you cruise on the highway or decide to get a bit racy. The design of the hot hatch shies away from the petrol-head bias looks but is distinctive enough to win most beauty contests with its competitors. The cabin features good quality materials but feels dated. Notwithstanding this, the portrait-like infotainment works well and there’s sufficient space to accommodate four adults. Today, we are sadly bidding farewell to the GWM ORA 03 GT after an extensive two weeks stint. Throughout the test period, the Ora 03 GT garnered a lot of attention from many onlookers thanks to its sporty looks. The cabin is equally sporty and upmarket thanks to premium appointments which have been married with sporty detailing. It’s also quite specious despite its compact size. The only trade-off is a small luggage capacity. Living with an EV can be daunting at first due to limited but growing charging infrastructure. It also requires proper planning before hitting the road, and 362 km on a full charge might not be ideal for longer drives. Driving in a spirited manner is enjoyable thanks to instant power and torque delivery. It’s not the quickest EV, but it’s quite nippy, especially when tackling makeshift apexes. We are handing back the keys to the Mazda 2 Individual 6AT 5-Dr. Outside it impresses with its styling, beautiful colour options and wrapped roof for that city car street cred. In typical Mazda fashion, the interior is bang on with the use of quality materials and a touch of plastics which can easily be overlooked because of how well it’s cabin is put together. Time has been spent in the Toyota Land Cruiser 76 and we have enjoyed many aspects about it – mostly the confidence inspiring – go anywhere bravado along with its manually lockable diff. Power is good, and the shifts are responsive. The ride was not as bouncy as we had thought it would be which is a major plus. The Land Cruiser is reassuringly solid, but we feel like some aspects can be updated without losing site of the LC’s philosophy. Today we welcome the aging, but still cute, range topping Mazda 2 in Individual 6AT 5-Dr guise. Outside, the Mazda 2 Individual gets a honeycomb grille with a red insert, LED headlamps, roof wrap, and 16-inch wheels. Our tester is also finished in a new color called Aero Grey. Stepping inside, the Mazda 2 Individual features interior detailing, including red stitching on the seats and red bezels across the cabin. Standard features also include a 7-inch touchscreen, head-up display, reverse camera and cruise control. Powering the Mazda 2 is a 1.5-litre normally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that produces 85kW/148Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic. New in South Africa, the JAECOO brand is a spinoff from Chery and it will focus on urban off-road SUVs. The automaker is entering the local market with the J7 model which has a distinctive and modern exterior design and styling. Highlights include its large grille with vertical slats, slim LED head and taillights with an integrated light strip, flush door handles, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the J7 is equally modern and minimalist thanks to a portrait 14.8-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, an aircraft gear selector, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless fast charger and leather seats with contrast stitching to name a few. Gone are the days of the Fiesta, Focus and now the EcoSport – as we welcome Ford’s most affordable car, the Puma, in Titanium guise with a starting price that raises an eyebrow. The exterior is however pretty, especially with the black trimmings. It looks more like a Fiesta evolution than a completely new car. Inside, as you may have guessed – is a drag and drop from the Fiesta with one or two new things like Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and minor storage updates (albeit cleverly done). Power comes from a 1.0l EcoBoost engine developing 92 kW and 170 Nm through a 7-Speed auto box. Our time with the Isuzu D-MAX AT35 has come to an end, and we are sad that we couldn’t play bumper cars with it. While this is one very cool bakkie, its configuration means the potential buyer needs to have a real need for the extra bulk and off-road prowess. We did enjoy a surprisingly low 8.5l/100km, worry free driving from potholes though this wasn’t without a bouncy ride. Is this a Raptor killer? The last day on the launch of the new Isuzu D-Max X-Rider presented an opportunity to sample the bakkies on and off-road capabilities. Powered by the Isuzu’s 1.9 Ddi engine and paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and coupled with 4x4 is a treat. The X-Rider feels comfortable in any road surface we took it through. We had a chance to take it off the beaten track on a short stint through Phantom Pass, and we can report that the X-Rider still holds proper off-road prowess. The launch of the Isuzu X-Rider ended on a high with some adventure which included quad-biking, segwaying and archery. Pricing for the Isuzu D-Max X-Rider starts from R640,500. We have been piloting the new Isuzu D-Max X-Rider and we’re quite enjoying it. We had a chance to drive from George to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve where they keep 4 out of the big 5. Outside, welove the unique styling cues that differentiates it from the rest of the D-Max range. The stand out features is the legendary red “ISUZU” lettering that adorns the front of the car. Inside it’s quite comfy thanks to leather seats which are complimented by red contrast stitching. Yesterday we touched down in George for the launch of the new Isuzu D-Max X-Rider. Outside it boasts sleek black gloss grille, distinctive red ‘ISUZU’ lettering at the front, and stylish black accents on the door handles, B-pillars, side-mirror covers, and tailgate handle. It also gets LED lights and 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Inside, the D-Max X-Rider gets red accents on door materials, stitching, and leather seats with ‘X’ logos. It also gets dark surfaces, a seven-inch infotainment screen, cruise control, and essential features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear park assist, and a rear-view camera. All D-Max X-Rider’s are powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine which produces 110 kW/350 Nm. Isuzu claims a fuel consumption of 5.6 L/100 km. We’ve arrived at in Cape Town and here’s our first look at the Mazda CX-60 Takumi. The new range-topper introduces a couple of model-specific styling cues like an exclusive front bumper design, a bar type piano black grille, a bright metal finish to the front signature wings, side signatures and glazing surrounds, and 20-inch black metallic, diamond-cut machined alloy wheels. Under the bonnet, the CX-60 is powered by a 3.3-litre in-line 6-cylinder turbodiesel mild hybrid engine developing a decent 187kW and 550Nm. We are returning to the keys to the Volvo XC60 T8 AWD. Even though the exterior design remains largely unchanged with subtle updates along the years, it certainly has aged gracefully. The Blond Leather in Blond/Charcoal interior transforms the already premium cabin, but is not advisable to those with younger kids. There’s also a good blend of soft-touch and high quality material. The combined outputs of 340kW/709Nm sees the Volvo XC60 T8 AWD accelerate like performance car. The handling and ride quality is smooth. It is silent on EV mode but there’s a grunt when it switches to petrol. This week we’ll be spending some time with South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle - the GWM ORA 03. Our test vehicle is the sporty-looking, top shelf ORA 03 400 GT Ultra Luxury derivative and it sports a bunch of model-specific exterior styling. Inside, the cabin is elegant and premium with a dash of sportiness thanks to trimmings that mirror the exterior. It’s powered by a single electric motor making 126kW and 250Nm. Zero to 100km/h is achieved in a claimed 8.5 seconds and has a claimed range of 400km thanks to a 63kWh battery pack. It also comes with a raft of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, Track-back reverse and 360-degree cameras to name a few. We have arrived in the Mother City for the launch of the new BMW 5 Series. Initially, Mzansi will have two models available from launch: the 520d and the all-electric i5 M60 xDrive. The German sedan boasts a new modern and athletic exterior design. The 520d comes standard with M Sport package and wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21-inches. Inside, the 5 Series features a curved display incorporating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW’s latest Operating System 8.5. We are spending this week in the Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge AWD, which sports subtle yet noticeable exterior design and styling updates. Inside, the T8 Recharge features Volvo’s latest Google-based infotainment system, complete with built-in Google apps and services. We have enjoyed our time in the Honda Civic RS. Its 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor is smooth and formidable with the engine rated at 131kW and 240Nm torque. Unlike other CVT’s we’ve tested, it is a non-dronie transmission which attributes to its smoothness – a combination that must be experienced to be understood. The cabin’s fit and finish plus quality in RS is knocking on, if not at the same level as some premium cars. We love the leather/suede combination seats, and the use of soft touch materials. During our stint, we managed to average a decent 8.0l/100km’s despite living with the sport mode. We spent almost two days with the new Tank 300 at launch, and we must say that we are very impressed with the new kid on the block. We like its boxy and rugged look which can be bolstered with a bunch of off-road accessories. The interior is premium, comfortable, spacious, well-insulated and has great tech. Its infotainment system is a bit glitchy but an update should solve this issue. The Tank 300 drives as good as it looks. The hybrid derivative is very powerful, it also has a great ride quality both on and off-road. Taking the road less travelled is also effortless and a piece of cake for the Tank 300 thanks to various driving modes like Mud, Sand, AWD, 4L and diff lock to name a few. Starting with the exterior, the Tank 300 has a box-shaped design. It sports round LED headlights and vertical LED taillights. After spending the day criss-crossing the Western Cape in the range-topping Honda Elevate Elegance, our first drive impressions of the newcomer are both bitter and sweet. Starting off with the sweet stuff, we like its elegant and understated look as well as its minimalist interior design which is also comfortable, has commendable build quality and sufficient space. It also impresses with exceptional ride quality, and ample power and torque. The bitter gremlin is the CVT. Despite Honda’s efforts to make it feel like a conventional auto box, the gearbox shouts and screams when accelerating moderately. That said, it’s compliant when driving at a snail’s pace. We really enjoyed our time with the Polo Vivo GT because of an unexpected seemingly all round package. We are bidding farewell to the alluring facelifted Range Rover Velar P400e Dynamic HSE. The exterior updates may be moderate, but the Velar is aging gracefully. It’s certainly one of the best-looking SUVs on the market. Jumping inside, you will notice that the two separate touchscreens are no longer there but a single 11.4-inch floating curved display. The system works well, but we miss the traditional control knobs. Throughout, the cabin is premium and quality is good. The Velar accelerates along quietly, and the switch over from electric only mode is smooth. It’s not the quickest of the mark, but the accomplished handling compensates for this. Today we welcome an icon in Honda’s product line-up, the Civic RS. Coated in Platinum white with black rims, a black boot lid, and handles, the Honda Civic RS looks cool, especially with its sunroof and LED headlights. Inside, there’s a mesh across the dash integrating air vents. Tech-wise, Honda’s SENSING takes care of things with Auto High-Beam, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. It’s got Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the latter needs a cable. The Honda Civic RS runs on a 1.5-litre turbo engine, making 131 kW/240Nm, sending power to the front wheels via an improved CVT transmission. Yesterday, we spent the afternoon sampling the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d Coupe. The coupe SUV comes standard with the AMG-Line trim and the model we sampled was equipped with the Night package, which adds black accents. Inside, it’s the same as the SUV derivative (pictured in our previous post) but suffers slightly in the rear headroom department because of the coupe slant. The drive is magnificent thanks to the brand’s Airmatic air suspension that comes standard on this model. There’s plenty of power thanks to a 3.0-litre turbo diesel motor that produces 270 kW and 750 Nm. The mild-hybrid adds 15 kW/200 Nm in short bursts, meaning at times you have a meaty 950 Nm for easy overtaking. This morning, we had the opportunity to experience the refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d, that can be noticed with its new headlight and taillight design. Inside, it’s premium business as usual. The highlight of the interior is the new steering wheel with haptic feedback buttons, which looks great but can be finicky to operate at times. Our ‘good mood - jump starter’ has been returned and even though this induced frowns – the BMW M2 leaves burnt in memories that will take something special to override. Some of the highlights that created a grin emoji on our faces include the cold start, endless dollops of power on tap, nimble handling that was surprisingly well damped and the encompassing emotional connection. Practicality is decent for a sports coupe and so was our 10.2l/100km considering the pace here. Is this the best M drivers’ car? Today we woke up bright and early for an off-road adventure at Lepalala game reserve, in close proximity with the Big Five, to see if the newly added 2.8 GD-6 concoction can still maintain the nameplate’s ‘Master of Africa’ title. We tackled various terrains including driving up and down rocky mountains, driving through muddy tracks and river crossings. Switching between 2H, 4H and 4L is a bit of faff thanks to a transfer case lever which makes it hard to engage a relevant mode if you are not used to the set-up. Once the correct mode is eventually engaged, the Land Cruiser takes tough terrain in its stride. Its Hill Descent control and Diff lock makes technical sections much easier. On day one of the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series launch, we cruised up to Limpopo where we are spending two days at the posh Lepogo Lodge and putting the ‘Master of Africa’ through its paces at a neighbouring off-road course. Throughout day one, we spent much of our time on the N1 highway and areas around Vaalwater. The tried and tested 2.8 GD-6 effortlessly hauls the substantial Land Cruiser 79 double cab; in fact, it’s quite peppy and is paired with a smooth 6-speed auto gearbox. Despite its massive size and imposing stance, it feels very lightweight with this engine. That said, its turning circle is quite wide, the suspension setup is quite choppy when faced with uneven roads, and the lack of cruise control might get you into trouble with the law on highways.
