2 amazing things happen this week! The second graders receive their Chumash, and the Jewish people receive the aseret hadibrot (10 commandments) in Parshat Yitro! On the sixth day of the third month (Sivan), seven weeks after the Exodus, the entire nation of Israel assembles at the foot of Mount Sinai for the Giving of the Torah. G‑d descends on the mountain amidst thunder, lightning, billows of smoke and the blast of the shofar, and summons Moses to ascend. G‑d proclaims the Ten Commandments, commanding the people of Israel to believe in G‑d, not to worship idols or take G‑d’s name in vain, to keep the Shabbat, honor their parents, not to murder, not to commit adultery, not to steal, and not to bear false witness or covet another’s property. Students and their parents rotated through a variety of stations including chevruta family learning examining text from Pirkei Avot, hands-on learning session about K'tav Stam (Torah calligraphy), and an exploration of the differences between a Sephardi and Ashkenazi Torah. At the event, the children also received their own inscribed chumashim (Five Books of Moses) with special messages from their parents. Second graders continued their Chagigat HaChumash celebrations in class this week. It’s like the people on the radio always say: “Ain’t no party like a chumash party.”
That’s a wrap on the last Chagigat HaChumash for this year. Now you all have to go finish learning all of the Torah otherwise you will need to return the Chumash you received.
